- Hrm, it still sucks [compatibility-wise] when opening certain MS Office-made documents (Word and Excel, mainly), but it IS a very good alternative for when you don't want to buy any MS products, so... way to go OO.org.

- Very good program. I had a powerpoint file that had over 500 slides with words on them, no graphics. When saved in Powerpoint 2003 it is 13 MB. When saved in OpenOffice, it is 80KB.

- This programs rocks!
Its a very good alternative to Office, its *free* and does some stuff that MSOffice doesnt like pdf export!
Only donwsides are some problems with complex MSOffice documents and somewhat RAM hungry (only a problem for older PCs)
With a couple improvements on the import/export front this thing will give Office a run for its money!

- Solution to all those MS-file format im-/export problems is:
Just stop using .doc/.xls/.pps etc. and use .sxw, .sxc (and .sxi guess, never used Impress before :p)
And to those whose friends and colleagues don't have OOo - show them!

- I have! I just wish it was that simple.....
Usual reaction is: "oh, cool..." <goes back to MSOffice> -

- Yup, exactly what I have experienced with most of my mates using MSOffice, needs some time
Best way to persuade them is showing them differences that simply make working a lot easier and stuff.
Reminds me of my constant mission of convincing all the IE users known to me (which is about every person I know minus 4) to switch to Firebird or the likes - it's much more simple to find an example of IEs crappy HTML/CSS compatibilty. (Must be because there are standards for HTML and CSS
)

- I have stoped using MS Office after seenig this. It realy creates much smaller files and a big plus for me is exporting to PDF. And the ability to have the same app on Linux computers and on Windows machine is great. Not to mention I save a lot of money with OpenOffice.org. I also showed this to friends and they like it a lot. Great job OOo developers!

- How does this thing run though? Does it run compiled native to each platform? Last i tried it (maybe a year ago) it was running on some virtual machine (Java?) and was DOG-SLOW!. I love the idea of cross-platform apps.... but adding in that middle layer of a VM kills them.

Oracle's Enterprise Manager suite is another example. In Oracle 7 (and maybe 8, i dont remember) all the utilities were compiled to native Windows code... and ran great. Now in Oracle 9 they all are written against the Java VM and the things CRAWL and eat up memory like wild.

OpenOffice.org is the open source project through which Sun Microsystems is releasing the technology for the popular StarOffice productivity suite. It is an international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format. It establishes the necessary facilities to make this open source technology available to the developer community.
