Thanks Fotix for this post in the forums. Mozilla Thunderbird is a redesign of the Mozilla mail component. Our goal is to produce a cross platform stand alone mail application using the XUL user interface language. Our intended customer is someone who uses Mozilla Firebird (or another stand alone browser) as their primary browser and wants a mail client based on mozilla that "plays nice" with the browser. In addition, by focusing solely on stand alone mail, we believe we can make some dents in the overall footprint and performance of the mail client by removing components and chrome we don't need. On top of that, the UI becomes much cleaner as a stand alone application as opposed to being part of the mozilla suite.

Since this is our first milestone release, everything is new! In addition to the feature set found in Mozilla Mail, Thunderbird has several new features and improvements to make your mail and new experience better.

* Customizable Toolbars and Mail 3-pane
Toolbars can be customized the way you want them. Choose View / Toolbars / Customize inside any window. Mozilla Thunderbird also supports a new vertical 3-pane configuration (Tools / Options / General), giving you even more choice in how you want to view your mail.

* Extensions
UI extensions can be added to Mozilla Thunderbird to customize your experience with specific features and enhancements that you need. Extensions allow you to add features particular to your needs such as offline mail support. A full list of available extensions can be found here.

* Contacts Manager
A contacts sidebar for mail compose makes it easy and convenient to add address book contacts to emails.

* Junk Mail Detection
In addition to automatically detecting junk mail using the same method as Mozilla Mail, Thunderbird also sanitizes HTML in mail marked as junk in order to better protect your privacy and give peace of mind when viewing a message identified as junk.

* New default theme
Mozilla Thunderbird 0.1 sports a crisp, fresh and attractive theme, based on the amazing Qute theme by Arvid Axelsson. This is the same theme used by Mozilla Firebird, giving Thunderbird a similar look and feel. Thunderbird also supports a growing number of downloadable themes which alter the appearance of the client.

* Stream-lined user interface and simplified Options UI.
* Integrated spell checker.

It's the only mail program I have found that has been able to import my Outlook 2003 Mail & Settings... (Eudora 6 is supposed to do it, but crashes)

Does that logo remind anyone else of communists? Maybe it's just me

Sounds nice, but I think I'll wait for it to mature a bit more. I mean, version 0.1?

To be honest, it looks like they trimmed down the right side of the original Quake logo and used a bit of the coloring from the Quake III Arena logo.

When you see a post that idSoftware is suing them for trademark infringement, remember you read it here first.

It's version 0.1, you dope, but if you read more about it, its based off mozilla mail 1.5 and its a derivation of it.
#13.1 Skyfrog on 29 Jul 2003 - 06:12
I believe it would have been entirely possible to have stated that without the name calling. I mean you probably wouldn't like it if I called you a jerk so I won't. It wouldn't be polite. But yes, I know what it's based off of as it said that right in the first sentence of the article. Still what I meant was while it's probably nice I prefer the client I'm using right now. When it matures more I might give it another go.

And lo, doth the unfathomably long development cycle begin.

Call me when it's 1.1.

Seriously tho, I've played with it a little, and I'd switch over, but it doesn't have one lil' feature I've grown addicted to with xnews: saving attachments from many posts at one time in usenet. You know, rather than going post-by-post. You just select a bunch, then "Decode to..." and it saves it all. Great for...um...educational materials.
#16.1 neoufo51 on 29 Jul 2003 - 02:50
Do you understand that this derivation of Mozilla Mail is based off Mozilla Mail 1.5???

Its not unstable, dude, its working pretty well for me with my Firebird.
#16.2 Joshie on 29 Jul 2003 - 07:36
Of course I understand that. I'm talking about the feature set.

That's why I've scrapped Outlook 2000 in favor of Thunderbird (and damn glad I did) but still use XNews.

I've yet to see a program which can be at reading news and mail. It's one or the other (or in the case of Outhouse Express, neither).

Can you minimize this to the system tray?

Looks nice, but I still think Pine is the MUA to rule them all. It'll take a lot more than this to convince me otherwise.

Yay, another mail client, and a mediocre one at that.
