Stardock has released the public BETA of DesktopX version 2. DesktopX is a program that allows users to *easily* add true objects to their desktop. With it, they can put things that are both useful (weather, resource, and internet monitoring, MP3 players, ActiveX controks, etc.) or just cool (fish swimming around on the desktop, pretty icons, etc.).

Even if you don't use the objects, it allows users to enhance their desktop by adding special effects to desktop icons and letting users control which icons show and can provide desktop security.

There is a video demo for it that can be found here:

DesktopX is a revolutionary program that allows users to extend their Windows desktop to support true objects.

These objects can be combined together to form themes or used on their own. In short, a user can literally build their own desktop interface and they can do so without being a programmer.

In addition, a user can choose to just use individual DesktopX objects to enhance their existing desktop. DesktopX objects can be anything from a simple picture to an MP3 player, stock tickers, weather monitoring, instant messaging, or anything else that one could imagine having on their desktop.

Users can either create their own objects or download any of the thousands of themes and objects already available and use them.

I love Star "gotta make your computer sluggish" dock's stuff.

I've been using all of them for about a year until I realized my mistake >.<

Try USING DesktopX 2. Good grief. There is nothing in it that inherently affects system performance. It's an object framework.

It's like saying C++ programs slow down your computer.

gee, i wonder if this was at all influenced by the fact that Konfabulator (mac app) was just shown on The ScreenSavers last night?

This release has been planned for a while.

It's not as if they're competeing anyway. One is for Windows the other Mac.

Ok you don't need fish, but that is just showing the power of the program. There are plenty of uses that are productive. It just may take a bit for people to develop them, but they will. I run ObjectDock, DesktopX2, Windowblinds, CursorXP and keep a few programs open and my CPU usage is generally 5-10%, but usually hovering around 5%. Its far from a system hog.
It makes Windows what Windows should have been to begin with.

I kind of like DesktopX. But the important things ain't the framework itself, it is how it is used. And I'm not not smart enough to create something great for use with DX. I love the weather feature(but it doesn't work in Europe), and I like having a news site embedded on my desktop without ActiveDesktop.

And changing the desktop icons into huge animated thingies with larger fonts and shadows is nice too. But I want anti-aliased fonts!

It should be much more flexible than ever cool Samurize, so I'm hoping some skilled neowinians can create something spiffy.

lol, Neobond to the rescue!!! Syro's comment was not in contravention to the rules of the board in any way, so just chill! I interpreted it to be a question posed to Frogboy and siding WITH him, not against him in asking if he is tired having to defend his software against ppl bad mouthing it. <sarcasm>I could be wrong!</sarcasm>
