Microsoft Works, the company's suite of productivity and consumer software often found on bargain PCs, has been refreshed for 2004. Billed as an outstanding value by Microsoft, Works lashes together several popular products for $100 USD. Works Suite 2004 will ship with a combination of Microsoft Word 2002 and its custom database software, as well as Money Standard 2004 and Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia Standard 2004.

Pending detailed information from Valve, we are only aware one bug with Rel. 50 and the version of Half Life 2 that we currently have - this is the fog issue that Gabe referred to in his presentation. It is not a cheat or an over optimization. Our current drop of Half Life 2 is more than 2 weeks old. NVIDIA's Rel. 50 driver will be public before the game is available. Since we know that obtaining the best pixel shader performance from the GeForce FX GPUs currently requires some specialized work, our developer technology team works very closely with game developers. Part of this is understanding that in many cases promoting PS 1.4 (DirectX 8) to PS 2.0 (DirectX 9) provides no image quality benefit. Sometimes this involves converting 32-bit floating point precision shader operations into 16-bit floating point precision shaders in order to obtain the performance benefit of this mode with no image quality degradation. Our goal is to provide our consumers the best experience possible, and that means games must both look and run great.

The optimal code path for ATI and NVIDIA GPUs is different - so trying to test them with the same code path will always disadvantage one or the other. The default settings for each game have been chosen by both the developers and NVIDIA in order to produce the best results for our consumers.

In addition to the developer efforts, our driver team has developed a next-generation automatic shader optimizer that vastly improves GeForce FX pixel shader performance across the board. The fruits of these efforts will be seen in our Rel.50 driver release. Many other improvements have also been included in Rel.50, and these were all created either in response to, or in anticipation of the first wave of shipping DirectX 9 titles, such as Half Life 2.

We are committed to working with Gabe to fully understand his concerns and with Valve to ensure that 100+ million NVIDIA consumers get the best possible experience with Half Life 2 on NVIDIA hardware.

Works is not compatible with Word, though. So it's useless if you want to view a Works doc in Word and vice-versa.

yea Works does what it says, and Office just *barely* works..

barely? Does everything I want it to do.

Now how does that work since the word processor for Works has been Word for quite a few versions now. Also Word has always been able to open the files generated by the old Works word processor.
#3.6 briangw on 14 Sep 2003 - 00:43
That must be new then. Because up until the last copy of Works that I saw in 2000, Word and Works were incompatible with each other.
#3.7 jesterzwild on 15 Sep 2003 - 03:39
Are you referring to Works Suite or Works? There is a difference. Works (7.0) comes with Works Suite (2004) as does Word 2002. As far as I know, Works 2000 (or whatever) came with Word 2000. Also Microsoft has provided a Works to Word convertor for many years now.

Pretty worthless to me as Office for Students and Teachers is a much greater value.
#4.1 Galley_SimRacer on 13 Sep 2003 - 13:23
Yeah, I have seen that seeing for as little as $99, and it's the REAL MS Office, not a Lite version.

last year I got Office XP Pro, Windows XP Pro, and Frontpage XP for $10 each from my university campus

agree on that

OMFG why are they still releasing this crap? I know its a hell of a lot cheaper that Office, but seriously Microsoft, fire the Microsoft Works team and use that money to reduce the price of Office.
#5.1 leebobs on 13 Sep 2003 - 15:03
Amen... Works is a hunk'o'sh*t... Why not distribute Office XP at a discount to home NFP users and Office 2003 to those Corps and Profit Making Companies that can realistically afford such a suite.

Stop releasing this ****

Many people would find works quite adquate for what they need, as it has a good selection of features, all simplified into one program. Also, the suite includes Money and Encarta.
#5.3 jesterzwild on 15 Sep 2003 - 03:46
If you haven't noticed, the Works applications included with the Suite (not Word, Money, Encarta, etc.) are all based on the Office applications. The smarter move would be to enhance these applications a little (updated UI's, etc.) more and reintroduce a Works word processor (instead of the "full-featured" Word). This would be the streamlined Office that so many cry about wanting.

Also I think having Money, Encarta, Word, etc. is more than worth the cost of Works Suite (think about the cost of Word alone).

i'm wondering why they do that as well

Why doesn't Microsoft just abandon MS Works. If they did this they could work towards making MS Office cheaps and something that is really worth the upgrade. I still prefer Office 2000 over XP and don't see the point in going for the next upgrade, 2003. And yes if you noticed, 3 years wasted doing minor updates just to make a few more bucks. Same could be said of Works too. If anyone wanted a cheap alternative to MS Office, Open Office works well and 1.1 final is just around the corner at no extra cost,

COS ITS FREE!!!!!!
#6.1 jesterzwild on 15 Sep 2003 - 03:42
I'll spend a couple hundred for Office rather than use the clunky Open Office anyday. I've also found Office 2003 to a far superior product than 2000 (XP less so).
