Thanks to Gregor of DotProject, for the heads up.

The final version of the popular Internet web browser and Mail/News client has been released after over a dozen of betas.

There seems to be no word on the changes yet, but here it is for those who like the browser :)

Download: Opera 7.20 Final
View: Opera
News source: Dotproject.org

What's New in This Release:

· Starting with version 3.50, ChrisTV is no longer a freeware software :( It's shareware, check the purchase page on www.chris-tv.com for details.
· Recording feature has been added to ChrisTV, you can use any video/audio compression codec installed on your PC.
· Standard version will record only from TV Tuner Capture Devices.
· Professional version will record from any Capture Devices installed, like TV Cards, Webcams, Video (TV) In Cards, Cameras.
· Added Radio-FM support (works only on TV Cards with RadioFM support)- still experimental - if you set a FM Frequency that you know it works and is only noise (no proper sound) then choose in Audio Input box between Tuner In or Line In (for each radio station).
· Now you can add as channel the composite input and s-video input.
· Added Image Processing Filter (only available in ChrisTV Professional version), it will not work in recording mode for the moment. You can apply video effects : red, green, blue, darken, invert, blur, gray, and emboss effects.
· Image Capture works now faster and is more stable.
· Now you can autoscan using 2 methods : by frequency (channel tables) or by Channel Number (use Scan Mode button for switching between the 2 modes)
· Added support for adjusting the frequency of a channel using the channel number.
· Now there is an option for each channel to set the sound mode : Auto, Mono, Stereo, Dual.
· Channels window has been redesigned in order to be more easy to add/scan/finetune channels.
· Added support for ATI All in Wonder 9800 with original WDM Drivers, the no sound bug has been removed. :)
· Dscaler Deinterlace Filter is no longer in the ChrisTV 3.50 Package, you can download it from here and install it (please check the readme.txt file for installation instructions).
· Updated the ChrisTV Help file :)
· More than 200 TV logos.
· 4 New language files have been added to ChrisTV package : Danish ( Thanks to Payne ), French ( Thanks to BlindMan & Drizzt ), Spanish (Thanks to Sergio Baretto), Ukrainian (Thanks to Andrew aka "Palych" Burtyk & Alezz).
· A lot of improvements & fixes were made.

Great new features:

# "inline Find" beefed up to provide same functionality as Mozilla's Find as you type.

# DOM/DHTML often faster than in IE / Mozilla[1]

# Close a page you then want to open again?, it keeps the last 100 pages for you (with back / forward history intact!!!).

# Javascript control - choose which JS 'features' authors can inflict on you.

# Unregistered users get very functional google text-ads with a google searches related to the current page feature.

# The lightning fast layout engine can now be user controlled using first paint delay to control page reflow.

# Middle click fully configurable.

# Lots of improvement for the mailclient M2.

# BiDi finally implemented.

A great release.

What the heck is BiDi, and what -- if anything -- does that acroynym stand for?!?!
#3.2 iandol on 23 Sep 2003 - 16:03
BiDi - BiDirectional text, basically covering arabic and hebrew (and some other more obscure languages). Opera promised to have BiDi avaiable for a while but it took some time for them to get it (almost) right.

Try to think about what you wrote, okay?

And just so you'll get a clue...
Unregistered users have the choice between two types of ads:

1. Normal generic ads, like before
2. Text-ads from Google that are relevant to the currently visited page

If you choose the new format you will get text-based ads from Google that are relevant to the content of the page you visit. The currently visited page URL is used for finding the best ad and corresponding related searches. Google and Opera are committed to protecting the privacy of our users, and more information about the system (and the measures we take to protect you) can be found here.

Read the changelog first and then try to be a smartass, sheesh.

Not sure about Google (with all the hoolaboo about the google toolbar) but Opera is pretty cool about it. No additional software. No spyware that I have ever heard of. Just pure functionality.

isnt every bloody version the final?...
#4.1 Sushubh on 23 Sep 2003 - 16:32
7.20 had 13 betas of which atleast 8 were as good as final for normal users like me...
Earlier ones had problems like freezing and 100% CPU usage... Beta 8 was the one I replaced 7.11 with!

it depends on memory and cache settings in opera and the pages complexity
of course open 8 tabs with 'about:blank' and you'll see 20MB
(1 reply) #9 force2k on 23 Sep 2003 - 17:51
Oh sorry I was reading it wrong yeah it’s only using about 15MB.
#9.1 force2k on 23 Sep 2003 - 20:53
I just checked and it uses about 100MB page file and around 15-20MB Memory.

opera rules. yeah, firebird is free, blah blah blah. i don't care. i have no problems paying for a piece of software that i enjoy.

it's fast and small - i've got three neowin tabs open, a google search, and myway.com open and i'm using a whopping 17.4MB.

customizable? oh hell yes.

websites? it renders all my favorite sites perfectly, so that's really all i care about.

EXCELLENT browser.

I payed for Opera and I've never looked back.

#11.1 nookadum on 26 Sep 2003 - 10:19
I never payed for Opera and I've never looked back.

It IS a good browser, but not the best because you still have to pay.

Well... *hides his keygen*

#12.2 NeoMasamune on 24 Sep 2003 - 00:54
lol!
#13 cork1958 on 24 Sep 2003 - 03:48
Been using Opera almost exclusively since the early 5x versions. Definitely the fastest browser on Earth. What sites I hit that don't render correctly, I've notified the webmaster of and some have even thanked me for informing them of that.

'mouse gesture' is awesome, it saves a lot of time especially when i used to browse pixxx
#14.1 Sushubh on 24 Sep 2003 - 09:14
true. i tried installing mouse gestures in firebird but could not get them to work... Yikes. Too complicated for me.
#14.2 mrbester on 25 Sep 2003 - 14:18
Then you weren't trying very hard: All-In-One Gestures is the kiddie *

* written using Firebird 0.6.1 with All-In-One Gestures, Googlebar and plenty others installed without a blip.
#14.3 Sushubh on 28 Sep 2003 - 12:44
maybe... but i installed it for sure. and since the feature was a direct lift from Opera... I expected it work in a similar way atleast as the default settings (well alt+D and Ctrl+Enter works similar to IE). But it did not.
I tried configuring it. Yikes. Can't I have a simpler version?!

Opera comes installed with everything (well almost) that mozilla (many times the file size) requires extension. With Opera I dont even have to try... Its preinstalled
#15 iandol on 24 Sep 2003 - 09:47
And Opera's implementation of mouse gestures is currently superior to Mozilla/Firebirds Optimoz or the many IE shells like MyIE2. You can get fine customisable control of the UI down to specific UI components like edit boxes etc.

I love the new middle-click options! Also, you can change them easily by shift-middle clicking.
