Hello Testers!

The Beta Team is excited to announce the beginning of a brand new Beta test: Tahiti! During the course of this test, several new features will be added to the AOL® Beta software. Join us now in testing the first release for Tahiti, build 4156.50. You can download the Tahiti Beta software by going to AOL Keyword: Beta and clicking the Tahiti Beta Test link.

A few of the areas that you can look forward to seeing updated during the Tahiti beta test are the connectivity to the AOL service, the AOL Address Book, instant messaging and the Buddy List® feature, including SuperBuddy™ icons.

Please post any questions or comments that you have about this test in the message boards in the Tahiti Beta area, and be sure to file a Bug Report for any issues that you might encounter with the software.

Thank you,

- The AOL Beta Team

"We think that wireless is clearly a big deal in mobile computing with 802.11," said Dell.

"In the enterprise market we are very much believers in the scale-out technologies with clusters or grids of servers; two-way and four-way servers.

"The market for larger servers - four-way and eight-way - is going down and the projections for two-way and four-way are going up. In the overall market for servers, about 99 per cent of the volume is for two-way and four-way."

The company is also branching out into new consumer areas, adding an online music service to rival Apple's iTunes, and building flat screen televisions, although there was no indication of whether this would be globally or just for the US market.

Like many of its rivals, Dell is pushing hard into the services sector, with the launch of Dell Managed Services and Dell Professional Services.

Unisys is providing the bulk of the services for Dell, and has to date signed deals with the likes of Axa and Cable & Wireless.

It is targeting those services that are becoming commoditised, such as desktop outsourcing and managing upgrades. Dell confirmed that the company would not be touching the more difficult custom application or development services.

Jon Collins, senior analyst at Quocirca, commented: "Dell has been missing out on this market because it sells direct, so it's an opportunity to have almost a reverse channel arrangement.

"It can use the systems integrators without saying that it is changing its business model."

Using third-party suppliers to provide the services gives Dell more chance of success, added Collins, because it does not have to go through a learning curve in this sector.

Is Tahiti going to be AOL® 10.0?

We are continuously enhancing the AOL service to provide our members with new and improved features and Tahiti is the code name for an updated version of our software.

What is different about Tahiti?  This looks the same as AOL 9.0 Optimized.

We are still in the early stages of this beta test and some artwork and labeling within Tahiti have been carried over directly from previous Beta versions of AOL 9.0 Optimized.  So, early on in Tahiti's development, you may still see screens and windows labeled with "AOL 9.0 Optimized." We will be rolling out enhancements and new features for testing on an ongoing basis so stay tuned. Also, please note: Installations of Tahiti will create a desktop icon with the word BETA across the top of the standard AOL icon.

What are the system requirements for Tahiti?
The system requirements are:

Pentium® class processor 166 MHz or higher
Windows® operating system of Windows 98 or higher
Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
Between 420 - 440 MB of free hard drive space to the Tahiti beta software depending on your Windows® operating system, and up to an additional 81 MB if you need to install a new version of Internet Explorer
128 MB (megabytes) of RAM minimum
VGA, SVGA or better display
800x600 screen resolution (minimum), 1024x768 for optimal viewing
28.8 Kbps or faster modem or other means of Internet connection
Pentium is a registered trademark of Intel Corporation. Windows is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation.

After installing the new Tahiti beta software, my Organize and IDB folders are missing from the America Online folder.  Where did they go?
In order to comply with new Microsoft Windows installation requirements, it is now necessary to install certain files to a common directory in the Windows OS.  The location of this folder depends on which Windows OS you are using:

Windows 98/98se/ME: C:/Windows/All Users/Application Data/AOL.
Windows 2000/XP:  C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data (hidden folder*)/AOL.

Within this "AOL" folder, you will see a subfolder which matches the name of the folder for your AOL software.  For example, if the AOL 8.0 program is installed to C:/Program Files/America Online 8.0, you will see a subfolder named "C_America Online 8.0".  Your Organize and IDB folders can be found in this folder.

*To view hidden folders in Windows 2000 or XP:
- Double-click My Computer from the Windows desktop
- From the menu bar, select Tools > Folder Options > View tab
- From the Advanced Settings, select "Show hidden files and folders", then click OK

It appears they're finally moving into using Visual Studio .NET 2003 @ AOL

that is at least Visual C++ .NET 2003. (MSVCP71.dll gives that away).

When the beta test for Tahiti is done, and all the new features have been introduced and proven to be bug free, I would imagine it will GM as AOL 9.0 Optimized Plus, or it could simply GM as a newer version of AOL 9.0 Optimized. Who knows. I can't wait though! Sounds pretty cool.
