Would you be able to provide some screenshots of this version, please?

I'm pretty sure they use KDE anyway so you can go to http://www.kde.org if you want to check it out.

No, they got back into business
#5 nicedreams on 24 Jan 2004 - 02:32
That was pretty damn quick. I didn't expect a version 10 for a long time.

Mandrake is pretty slick, but not the best. I like SUSE better since it has better font support after install. Mandrake's "urpmi" is the bomb though. I wish everything had that.

Does version 10 support nForce2's built-in ethernet? I tried 9.2, and was very annoyed when I couldn't connect to the internet because it wasn't supported .

LOL!

I was like "uh..." and looked down at my keyboard, then laughed out loud alone in my basement.

I had alot of problems in the begining with 9. Didnt even know they worked the bugs out of that people were having. Definetly like Mandrake though.

Cool! I might give Mandrake another chance. (I've been using Fedora)

I've been trying to install Gentoo on my computer (not LiveCD); the installation has to be done completely from the command-prompt, and is about as easy as installing MS Office would be if it didn't have an installer :/. When XFree kept freezing on me, and then my ReiserFS partition mysteriously crashed (thus requiring me to re-install), I gave up on it. That was 5 hours of my life wasted .

But, once Gentoo has a decent, graphical installer, then I'll try it
#11.2 CheeseCow on 24 Jan 2004 - 19:59
There has been much debate on the Gentoo forums about this, and I am sure that many of your probles could have been solved there. If your HD fails and GFX card crashes, it is either misconfigured or broken.

There are several advantages to having a "manual" install;

- It means that you know everything that happens, you are doing it yourself
- You learn a lot about the OS up front
- It keeps out the lazy people, who just click through the install then bitch at the end when something doesn't work.

And yes, installing Gentoo is a tedious task(at least it can be), but once it is installed it is a very fast and solid GNU/Linux flavor. And the biggest benefit - You NEVER have to re-install. You can always upgrade to the latest and greatest everthing with a simple "emerge rsync ; emerge -u world", while you grab a cup of coffee or coke or whatever you'd like.

And I don't even run Gentoo anymore. But it is a great OS, even though it isn't for everyone.

I used to like Mandrake, but not until I gave Slackware a try.
#12.1 Spyder on 25 Jan 2004 - 02:30
so when you tried slackware, you liked mandrake?

lol i know what you're trying to say, it just came out wrong

All i need is a free distro that actually has winmodem support
#13.1 PseudoRandomDragon on 24 Jan 2004 - 19:47
Very little chance of that happening. WinModems are made for Windows and crafted to foil any other attempts on making support for it. Shame, I have a modem that does work with Mandrake that I don't use. Too bad I can't give it to you. Oh well, if you search for old computers in the dumpster I am sure you can recover a modem.

#15 mcnelson on 24 Jan 2004 - 17:56

do they finally have the audigy cards working properly?

I tried the last cooker release and that's the one thing it was messing up on (which is something I NEED)
#16.1 PseudoRandomDragon on 24 Jan 2004 - 19:48
I found that turning off full-duplex mode for my sound card fixed it and made everything play right. Maybe you can try messing with the settings.
#16.2 MR_Candyman on 25 Jan 2004 - 05:05
problem is when mandrake loads, it says there was an error and that it turned off the sound card. replacing the sound driver doesn't fix this. MDK is THE ONLY distro I've EVER had this problem with. I've gone through countless forums trying to solve the problem, but in the end just gave up and continued with other distros. Most distros don't support my linksys wireless PCI card though (which is a necessity aswell). Slackware's the only one so far that will, but I can't get radeon drivers working properly in it. The max resolution they'll go to is 800X600 16 bit color, no 3D acceleration. Again, replacing the driver properly doesn't work, which is odd because doing that for both sound card and vid card in red hat worked...but again my wireless isn't supported....

darn linksys for removing the card's driver form their site...sooo annoying

#18.1 ABC½ on 25 Jan 2004 - 17:10
Same here, I wanna make a HTPC with my Shuttle X under Linux...
#19 WingZero on 25 Jan 2004 - 18:53
You know what i wish? I wish someone would write a driver for the damned BTDA USB ISDN box already =/

*Maybe* i'll look at linux seriously then.

Mind you, it is tempting.
