Nullsoft Winamp is a fast, flexible, high-fidelity music player for Windows. Winamp supports MP3, CD, Audiosoft, Audio Explosion, MOD, WAV and other audio formats, custom appearances called skins, plus audio visualization and audio effect plug-ins. additional features including free-form skins, a new decoder, built-in cross fade, and an advanced Media Library

Winamp3 was a failure in terms of what it hoped to achieve, many users reverted back to Winamp 2 as it was faster and more recent versions included some of the features that 3.0 introduced.

Winamp5 (working title) hopes to merge the best features of the two, as this is an alpha this version is not yet obvious but I am sure you guys will want to try it out anyway!

Yeah, I really enjoy Foobar2000 since it is faster & uses less memory/resources than Winamp. Winamp 2 is ok & Winamp 5 is too bloated but Foobar2000 kicks Winamp out of the ballpark.

[trolling mode] Foobar2000!!!! [/end trolling mode]

Actually, the video thingy for Winamp 5 isn't anything to shout about.
I compared it by watching the same video file and I can't seem to like how winamp 5 shows the video file. Media Player Classic beat it by a nose or by a arm....or something like that.......

Sound wise...not much different from Foobar2000.............anyway, I used both...........

I honestly tried Foobar2000, why does the interface look so ugly?
Quote this comment #4.2 Posted by vip on 06 Feb 2004 - 20:19
i love the interface, it's nice and simple .. you can format your playlist to look different though
Quote this comment #4.3 Posted by mimeryme on 06 Feb 2004 - 20:59
foobar2000's interface is ugly? It inherits Windows' look. That's the best part of it all. FYI, there's foo_looks a skinnable interface you can use w/ foobar2000.

Someone needs to f ix that post. It says Winamp 5 is still in alpha.
(2 replies) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #8 Posted by djgramma on 06 Feb 2004 - 20:05
Better to keep it simple than to make it an all around player, like Foobar2000. I've always loved Winamp, and version 5 is the best, but video shouldn't be focused on, because it's not their best traid here.

But on the other hand, it could be something more after a couple tries. We'll see. Right now, it's only an mp3 playa in my book.

    Cheers

I'm a Winamp Beta tester and I can confirm that this is the final version of 5.02. The build is even available on the Nullsoft server (http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp502_full.exe)

Edit: After further checking the Softpedia.com download actualy points to the file on nullsoft's server.

yeah I think it is slower than Winamp 2.91 by 3 times. Wont understand too much on faster 1.5Ghz and over PC, but just try it in lower than those PCs aWinamp5 takes as long as Winamp3 did. Winamp5 seems to just be an update to Winamp3
    Quote this comment #23.4 Posted by ova-flow on 07 Feb 2004 - 18:57
No, you're wrong. Winamp 5 is the direct upgrade from 2.91, built on the exact same engine. Try running it in classic skin mode instead

That's what I was thinking. Now if they'd only support importing of iTunes' library files (.itl) or even the .xml library I might switch back.

    Saaaweeeet! Thank you so much!

[EDIT]Still sticking with iTunes even though that plug-in works like a charm. I just can't get excited about winamp anymore because iTunes is so much easier to use and doesn't look cluttered. The only thing iTunes is lacking for me is winamp3 style enqueing which even the Jump to File Extra (JTFE) winamp 5 plug-in doesn't solve (it's suppose to).[/EDIT]

"Fixed winamp appearing on secondary taskbar with ultramon regardless of true position"

Well that problem certainly has been fixed.
Now winamp appears on my primary taskbar regardless of its true position.

If I right click -> move to other monitor, an ugly 2.x style immovable box comes up.
So I minimize it then maximize (that used to fix it in 5.01) and the taskbar entry
just moved back to the first monitor!

Oh the frustration... ended up turning taskbar entry off and have it in the systray instead now.

bah the only problem i cared about they didn't fix...

whenever winamp5 starts up for me (on startup) it loads the playlist but not the main window. If i just click on the systray icon the main window will show up. But it's always loading with it hidden, without fail.

    Anyone else have this problem?

i checked out some of the other plugins by that dr0 guy.. i like the Single-Click plugin, that and the startup minimize were the only beef i had with winamp5! now i have no guilt about switching from 2.91 =D.
