Kerio Personal Firewall (KPF) is a software agent that builds a barrier between your personal computer and the Internet. It is designed to protect your PC against attacks from both the Internet and other computers in the local network. It controls all data flow in both directions – from the Internet to your computer and vice versa, and it can block all attempted communication allowing only what you choose to permit. This makes it an ideal solution for notebook computers that freely travel in and out of the corporate network, facing exposure to various risks as they connect from different locations.

What's new?
  • Antivirus check of email - SMTP and POP3
  • Advanced spam filter of incoming emails
  • Kerio VPN server & client for easy VPN deployment
  • P2P Eliminator - blocking of P2P clients
  • Email alerts for important events on the firewall (virus detection, ..)
  • Advanced real-time statistics about internet traffic and user quotas

This one is a great firewall... compatible with many P2P programs as well. BUT, I think that the firewall included in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (RC2 will be released tomorrow?) will get this company out of business.

I don't think so, the SP2 firewall is still very basic, even if it is better than the previous integrated solution.

Anyone's recommendations on a good freeware firewall? In particular, I want to be able to block outgoing traffic by program and by protocol. I'm currently using ZA Pro 2 (yes, it's old!) because I can set Outlook to have POP/SMTP access but not HTTP access, for example.

The latest version of Zone Alarm (4.5) is still capable of blocking ports and protocols for a specific app, in the "Expert Rules" section. You can achieve what you want.

ZA is a great program, but Kerio has some VERY nice features that ZA STILL lacks. This annoyes me personally being a subscriber to ZA, they never satisfy me. Theres been so many times were I have come close to replacing my ZA with Kerio, on ALL my boxes. But currently I run a mix of both.

These features like a TCP,UDP real-time connection activity screen is one thing thats missing in ZA but Kerio has had for several versions. I love it, and cant live without it. Kerio also proivides remote admin which some people may find useful, it seems to have better support for VPN, too.

I use both and Kerio and ZA both rock, but if youre more of a tekkie then you will like Kerio for its advanced features and informational statistics it provides. ZA is way too user friendly, to the point where important functionality is just not there at all. Power users will not feel an overwhelming sense of satisfaction. I feel like I have so much more control with Kerio.

Both apps now have the ability to block Java, ActiveX, scipts etc, where most of the internet nasties come from, basically with the exception of worms. Of course the firewall part of the program protects you from worms. They seem to be on par with things like Credit Card protection, ebay username/pass protection, etc. I believe packets are sniffed and if these details are found in any packet it will not be sent to the internet. Dont know how useful this is as these details could be easily encrypted before being sent by a malicious program. Cant see how their firewall would deal with that.

Anyway, If I was to recommend a software firewall, for the less experienced user, ZA is for you, but for the more advanced user, Kerio is for you. Thats just my 2c

Does anyone know if they fixed the issue of excess load times for huge files when using the firewall :/ It even sometimes froze the computer when I tried to install tribes with the firewall on, and without it, it only took a few seconds to install. I'll probably just stick with Kerio 2.1.5 since it's such a great firewall

Yeah, I ran into that same issue when I tried to install PlanetSide Trial from FilePlanet.. it was a huge 1GB+ executeable, and would decompress into several more 1GB+ executeables, each one locking the system up for an hour while Kerio tried to "control" / "scan" it.

Couldn't agree more, 2.1.5 does everything I want it to (and doesn't have the playschool colours). I'm glad I kept a copy of the installer for it.

Sygate Pro is still the best right now. Maybe not the best GUI, or the most feature-laden, but as a firewall it does the job and doesn't have problems with p2p, games, etc.

The SP2 firewall is still not going to be any substitute for a real firewall. It may have outgoing protection finally, but it doesn't have rules, or IDS, SPI, etc. In other words, it will NOT stop modern worms/trojans.

Sorry d00d, but actually the best software firewall is McAfee Personal Firewall Plus.
Quote this comment #4.2 Posted by Garrett Socling on 25 May 2004 - 23:34
I agree, SPF is the best.

McAfee and their bloatware...
Quote this comment #4.3 Posted by shed2069 on 26 May 2004 - 00:02
So, it doesnt look good or have heaps of features, but because it does its stated job of being a firewall, it is somehow the best? Please justify your claims.....

What do you mean by does not have problems with games?

re: mcafee
i dont agree. I've used mcafee for a while now. I've been having massive problems when downloading torrents where the connection is killed periodically, no web browsing, no messenger etc, then it suddenly works again. The same thing happens with p2p software. I've recreated the same issues on another pc too. I suspected my ISP was the problem, but speed tests etc all said otherwise.

I took off mcafee yesterday and put kerio on. Strangely, the problems have vanished. It seems mcafee is unable to handle the vast numbers of connections that p2p and bit torrent create.

Why is this firewall blocking P2P, what do we do to keep both the firewall & the P2P application together running then?
Quote this comment #7.1 Posted by Grappa on 26 May 2004 - 13:50
Make sure the app is allowed in the KPF configuration, and that the ports needed are open.

I haven't upgraded to this version, but I didn't have any problem with previous ones, is this a first time install for you?

Bah, so now they include anti virus checking... in a firewall app? plz if i wanna scan my mails i rather use norton. But as all other clean, good apps they finally gets bloated.. time to switch to outpost i guess.
Quote this comment #8.1 Posted by Amerk_5 on 26 May 2004 - 17:33
Or switch back to Kerio 2.1.5. It's still just as good even though there are no longer any updates.

I'm a fan of Sygate. I have had nothing but good experiences with it, and until something comes along and blows it out of the water, I'll be sticking with it.

Has anyone used both Kerio AND Outpost firewall? I wonder how Kerio is compared to Outpost, since I'm using outpost at the moment, and it works really nicely, qutie flexible.
