They need to quit messing with the gui and start working on the scanning part. I don't care if my antivirus is pretty, I care if my antivirus antis the virus.
#1.1 Hurmoth on 14 Jul 2004 - 15:23
Yeah I know! Who cares how it looks as long as it works!
#1.2 el22 on 14 Jul 2004 - 15:37
Much more people than what you'd think.
#1.3 Hurmoth on 14 Jul 2004 - 15:58
Well, let's see: would you rather have a nice beautiful UI, or would you rather have a vicious Trojan, virus, and/or worm that could destroy your important data?
#1.4 neoufo51 on 14 Jul 2004 - 15:58
The thing with the GUI is completely psychological. These days, when people see a glitzy looking program, they think, oooo, its gotta be good. Remember, they are trying to sell this to as many people as possible and the average end user isn't as computer savvy as you or I.
#1.5 Insane_Ninja on 14 Jul 2004 - 17:09
up until... 2002? the GUI was majorly overhauled every year.. its only recently been stable.. i think the last two years it looked almost identical to the prior year

That's not the point. Most people think that if they buy an anti virus, they won't have viruses. There are no "good" antivirus or "bad" antivirus for most of their customers, there are "nice", "ugly", "easy to use" and "complicated" antiviruses.

That's why they care.

And don't forget they have to give a reason for existing clients to upgrade to the newest version.
#1.7 Hurmoth on 15 Jul 2004 - 11:00
It may look ugly, but I promise it catches more then Norton
#1.8 Erich on 15 Jul 2004 - 17:08
I work on an internet help desk and alot of "non computer savvy users" think they got ripped off with norton 2004 and wish they kept 2003. Even the non-savvy computer users aren't as stupid as you all might think. People don't even want to have to use a virus scanner, if it was integrated into the os, I'm sure they'd love that alot more, but would you or I???
#1.9 Hurmoth on 15 Jul 2004 - 19:15
I would love to have an AV program intergrated right into the OS! That would be awesome!
#1.10 Hurmoth on 15 Jul 2004 - 19:17
Was just thinking, Norton AV Corp. Edition isn't pretty (doesn't work very good either), but the fact that it isn't pretty doesn't bother me. If you get the scanner itself right, then I'm happy, screw the UI!

They should really start working on minimising impact on system performance.
#2.1 JohnO on 14 Jul 2004 - 15:57
amen
#2.2 neoufo51 on 14 Jul 2004 - 16:03
They couldn't care less about that. They are trying to sell to people with new, faster, more powerful PC's. You know, to sell the entire Norton suite to suburban types with lots of cash to spend and want something to protect the new 3ghz Dell they got for the college boy. If you dont have the CPU for it, then too bad. You will never see a version that actually uses less CPU than the last version.
#2.3 PsykX on 15 Jul 2004 - 04:55
Ohhh, I wouldn't be so sure about this.

Recently, I scanned 350 000 files on my computer within one hour. Yes, it did use all of my computer ressources during this time, but with a similar configuration that I had 4 months ago, it would take ~6 hours and still take all of my computer ressources to scan 500 000 files.

I hated Norton 2004 because it would take all of my ressources, but I am really willing to go with this 2005 version

It is nice, stable and powerful!

#3.1 XxDesmus_MODxX on 15 Jul 2004 - 01:50
yeah, you're right

Norton works by taking up all the CPU resources to itself, and then the virus can't even launch.

Great technology.

The solution is simple, get NAV Corp.
#5.1 BlackAle on 14 Jul 2004 - 17:57
nah, forget Symantec. The solution is NOD32.

I don't know if the main window is actually a html page or they just tried to make it look and sound like IE... but damn, it sucks hard.

omg thx to god im not using norton antivirus anymore version 2004 is a ram eater and with activation.

Migrated to Trend Micro Pc-cillin 2004 and its great, frequent updates, and is fast scaning (15 compared to the 2 hours of norton antivirus)

#10 d33 on 14 Jul 2004 - 16:45
hmm here is the direct link to download it :
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/sabu/nav_beta_2005/NAV_2005b.exe

but needs serial key..

so better to register on NAV site first and then download it..

How resource-hungry it is this time ?
#14 midway40 on 14 Jul 2004 - 18:31
When I got my Dell 8300 3 GHz last March, it had NIS '04. It felt like I was still on my old 4100 800 MHz! Took NIS off and bought Trend Micro IS and hardly notice it is running.

this has a 30 day timebomb in it, so be prepared to go to you backup, as new builds cannot be installed ontop of this one.
(1 reply) #17 Spitfire_x86 on 15 Jul 2004 - 03:39
Use NOD32 or pre2004 version of Norton (2002)

This one is f***ing awful. It f***ed up my whole system
#17.1 PsykX on 15 Jul 2004 - 04:57
It gave me a little error on my 1st install (but it prevented me from using the whole antivirus software), but then I uninstalled it and did another install and everything worked fine for me!
#18 [M] on 15 Jul 2004 - 06:37
i've got norton systemworks 2004 and the live update wouldn't update , so i had to download the update off the symantec site ...
before updating it said it found 6 onfected files...after getting the update it said 23, though most of them were adware...only one was a trojan horse
#19 matric on 15 Jul 2004 - 12:35
I prefer eTrust EZ Armour (VET AV and Zonealarm Pro Firewall). Both are fast, simple, easy to use (how much easier can you get than "Go" and "Stop". Not only that Computer Associates and Microsoft are giving away free year subscriptions.

So in all which a. v. is the best at this time.I want total protection and if possible the ability to blow spy ends to smithereens,in short make them sorry they looked.
#20.1 frazell on 15 Jul 2004 - 16:45
The best Anti Virus is User Anti Virus...

What i mean by that is dont open suspicious files, etc...

Viruses are written to snoop Anti Virus apps so you will alsways get one that may slip thru. If you take the time to ensure your protected, then your protected...

Kinda like a condom, it can protect you from a virus, but its not 100%...
