Overview
Microsoft is committed to maintaining compatibility. To help achieve this, the .NET Framework Code Coverage Edition enables you to give Microsoft direct feedback on what portions of the .NET Framework and Win32 you’re most reliant on. It allows you to collect and upload data on how .NET Framework and Windows code is used by managed applications and components that you have developed. By opting in, Microsoft provides you an instrumented version of the .NET Framework containing a tool that collects the code usage information behind the scenes. All you have to do is exercise your code under the watch of this tool, then save and send the data.

By participating and providing an email address, Microsoft may contact you when later versions of the .NET Framework are released with information about code changes that are likely to impact your applications/components. Microsoft can also prioritize testing, compatibility efforts, and feature planning based on areas of the product that are heavily used by customers such as you. The .NET Framework Code Coverage Edition is to be used for testing purposes only. It should not be used in a production environment. After installing it and collecting/uploading your data according to these instructions, you should uninstall it.

If you are not interested in participating in this special program, you should install the regular .NET Framework redistributable package from link below instead. The .NET Framework Code Coverage Edition runs slower and consumes more memory due to the overhead of the data collection.

Important: You cannot install this alongside the normal .NET Framework version 2.0 on the same machine, and should avoid installing this on a machine with any version of the .NET Framework already on it. You should also reformat your machine after you’re finished with this product, or create a restore point prior to this install so you can restore it once you’re done.

Question, lets say I have Windows XP installed without any .NET framework versions installed. Now, if I install this 2.0 Beta 1 package, will I be able to run programs that were compiled against previous versions (e.g. 1.? Do I also need to install the previous .NET versions?

2nd question... I heard this new version is much faster when it comes to the drawing of GUIs and stuff like that. Is that true? If so, will it also make programs compiled w/ .NET framework 1.x work faster?

Thanks in advance.

The latest .NET 2.0 package requires the first 2.0 package to be installed, in order to install it.
