Hmmm. I am going to have to try out harmony on my ipod.

This should be a great app.

OH YEAH! No haters please. Off topic posts will not be tolerated.

Meh. You should try it out. For however long it lasts. I guess old gen iPod owners are safe, but newer owners there are actually more significant updates that'll keep coming :/

So what does harmony do with my pod?
Quote this comment #11.1 Posted by Galley on 18 Aug 2004 - 05:27
Basically it allows you to transfer your purchased tracks to any device that supports DRM, whether it be AAC, WMA or RealAudio 10-based. The AAC conversion is lossless, but conversion to WMA is lossy.

This is straight from karl_lillevold, a RealNetworks Sr. Codec Engineer:

QUOTE
As you know, the RealNetworks music store sells songs in 192 kbps AAC (as opposed to iTMS at 128 kbps). When transferring your purchased songs to the iPod, the AAC itself is not touched, but the Helix DRM is transmuxed to a DRM that is compatible with the iPod, i.e. fully protected and without trans-coding. If you then transfer the file back to your PC (for instance with Anapod), you get an M4P file, that is a protected MPEG-4 AAC file.

The Enterprise version is more or less a stripped down version aimed it businesses i.e. just to play RealMedia content

I prefer that to this home user junk

its still bloated and teh formats been forzen since 98 the file size is to huge for streaming, to many artifacts and now that the added there store its the most blaoted player/store of them all.
(2 replies) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #14 Posted by Fonze on 18 Aug 2004 - 03:50
49c and $5 for albums? that's crazy! they even have a nice selection of artists, more complete than napster it seems

edit:
the streams are even nice quality, tho i wish they would let you listen to more of the song before cutting it off, but all of the other stores do that...

Quote this comment #14.2 Posted by Galley on 18 Aug 2004 - 14:47
Van Halen's 36-track "BestOf Both Worlds" is selling for $5.99. That less than 17 cents per track! Real normally sells it for only $11.99. iTMS once had it priced at $34.99, but now it's down to $19.99, I believe.

C.R.A.P. it doesn't want to uninstall, eats up too much memory and is highly unusable. i would rather recommend j.river media center or apple itunes.

!

(at the bottom of real.com)

"Certain intellectual property and related rights of the iPod player and various things associated with it are claimed by Apple Computer,Inc. The use here by RealNetworks® is for identification purposes only. Real is not affiliated with or sponsored or endorsed by Apple. That being said, they seem like cool folks and we certainly wouldn't mind grabbing a beer with them."

....Hey Apple, we just circumvented your DRM to try and pull people from your software. Lets be friends!

Not to mention, try finding the actual FREE REAL BASIC PLAYER on the site the manual way.

Volume slider still alters global system volume setting or not yet?

So you either have a really crappy connection or don't know how to use a computer because I've NEVER had real player have to buffer on me.

It does not work on Windows 2003 Enterprise Server, and worst of all, the unisntaller does not work on Windows 2003 Enterprise Server either.. very bad
Quote this comment #26.1 Posted by CyberWolf on 18 Aug 2004 - 17:05
Why on gods green earth would you be installing real player on an enteprise server? And if this is not actually an enterprise server but just a pc class box running 2003 enterprise server, why on gods green earth are you using enterprise server on a pc...

Enterprise level server os's are not really designed to be media boxes. They do however run oracle or progress very well...
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #27 Posted by KenAF2 on 18 Aug 2004 - 17:02
Good for playing real files. Sucks that that it won't let you rip / download MP3s at better than 96Kbps . You've got to use the RealAudio, AAC, or Windows Media format to burn at a decent bit rate.

Make sure you go into Tools->Preferences and disable the Message Center crap that eats memory. Once you do that, it doesn't use any memory unless you launch the app.

I'm using the corporate client instead. MUCH better, not as bloated or gimicky. I liek my software simple. If I want to play RM files, I want software that does jsut that. I don't need it to surf the web, or wash my car, or give me disertations on the overall impact that cow flatulance has on the global economy.

Apple can be seen to be even more evil than Microsoft sometimes.Apple has an evil thing going with their ipod right now. They gotta smarten up and let others develop things for it.

Microsoft owns Windows, but they would be in legal turmoil if they decided to only allow them to develop for it. And don't think consumers would give a grab about a lack of programs. They'll be fine with Frontpage/word/ms-antivirus/IE/ etc and Microsoft would just buy out adobe so they can finish ruining the mac (buying bungie and virtual pc, and shutting down IE for mac)

Harmony will be killed off with iPod firmware, It's going to be an up hill battle for Real.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #35 Posted by insurektion on 19 Aug 2004 - 13:28
hey since i dont use realplayer wouldnt it be great if instead of obsoleting Harmony via firmware Apple put features in so I wouldnt just be upgrading against Harmony every release.

Let's try the new improved DRM, that changes the arguement from 'free or pay' to 'who do we pay'.. hmm.

No. But of Course, I agree everyone has a RIGHT to pay corporate bloodsuckers for music... if they choose to. Or eat live slugs. That's the spirit of freedom and democracy.

I love realplayer not only for the simple GUI, the organization and searching system, but for the support for the Sony MD... sadly, I have to bare with it. Its great however on snowboarding trips as I have the MD-Z1 (the sport 1, metal casing )
