Ed - Trend Micro have started a brand new beta for 2005; main new features include home network control, Wifi detection / protection, MS vuln. check, spyware, and a turbo scan.

Home network control
Home Network Control enables you to control supported Trend Micro software installed on other computers on your local area network (LAN). You can scan other computers on the network for viruses, update their program components, and check them for known Microsoft security vulnerabilities. You can also configure and view the properties and logs of the Trend Micro software on other networked computers.

Wi-Fi detection
Wi-Fi detection monitors your network and warns you of unwanted intrusions. Since accessing a wireless Ethernet (Wi-Fi) is much easier than making a physical connection, network intrusion has become a serious security problem. Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security will scan your network at the interval you specify, and warn you when new computers connect.

Microsoft security vulnerability check
Security Check inspects your computer for vulnerabilities that Trend Micro has identified as presenting a significant risk. These vulnerabilities or "security holes" make it easy for attackers, viruses or other Internet threats to harm your computer. Microsoft has publicly identified these vulnerabilities as issues that exist in their software. Patching security vulnerabilities helps significantly reduce the chance your computer will be attacked or infected by viruses.

Spyware scan and clean
Many Internet threats are not viruses or other inherently malicious code. Rather, they are applications which compromise your privacy, allow hackers to take control of your computer without your knowledge, or annoy you. They are frequently unknowingly downloaded along with desired applications. These threats include spyware, adware, dialers, joke programs, hack tools, remote access tools, password cracking applications, and other uncategorized software. Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security can scan for and clean these threats manually, or as a part of a Real-time Scan.

Turbo Scan
Turbo Scan allows you to speed up Manual Scan by skipping files that have already been scanned. When Turbo Scan is enabled, Trend Micro Internet Security keeps a record files that have been scanned. If there have been no changes to the file since it was last scanned, it is not scanned again. This can substantially reduce the time required for a Manual Scan.

Lightweight installation mode
The Lightweight installation mode allows you to install Trend Micro Internet Security with only Real-time Scan enabled, one of the most popular configurations used.

Sounds nice, my pc manufacturer just give my eTrust for free though!
#4.1 briangw on 26 Aug 2004 - 13:12
We used eTrust at work. Complete crap. Much better service and support through Trend Micro at home and at work.
#4.2 Puma on 26 Aug 2004 - 19:41
I agree. How coudl we trust an E trust that is untrustable? I used etrust to scan my pc @ home and didn't catch a single thing, but when I turned on Trendmicro and it caught several trojans. Wow..... good job to the Trend but can't put my trust to the so called "e trust".

a very good av very cheap very good protection and the best support replace navi 2004 for this one and its so light and protect a lot catch most virus than norton wont
#7.1 ir0nw0lf on 26 Aug 2004 - 21:40
Been thinking of replacing NAV, do you have a link to back that statement up, primarily the can catch more viruses than NAV part?
#7.2 eilegz on 27 Aug 2004 - 01:50
there was a test in the forum that demostrated that trend micro catch more than navi i dun remember and also at my experience my new pc got infected with gaobot (even i have all the patches installed and navi its on) and at my laptop with pc-cillin nothing happened

some people said that extendia is the best antivirus out there never tried so i cant say others like symantec corporate (many ways different from navi 2004) anyways i recommend pc-cillin in price and in performance and also comes with a firewall (a very weak one)
#7.3 DarkRyu on 28 Aug 2004 - 20:03
Rule 0: Never Believe a Anti-Virus website's own comparison with other Anti Virus. The information is always Biased on the features of that Anti Virus, thus not Valid (Sociology 101)

However ir0nw0lf, I do suggest switching off NAV, as it's rather inefficient at finding viruses. I would suggest you try the Free Online Virus Scan from Trend-Micro, if you suspect you have viruses, i'm sure it'll find them, as it has succeeded for me when NAV could not.

Search the forums, I remember a discussion on this antivirus of recent.
#8 denzilla on 27 Aug 2004 - 01:22
I know its useless to say this, but NAV could not catch a cold.

I signed up for their beta and got an email giving me the link, but for some reaon I keep getting a 404 error when i paste the download URL into my broswer.
#9.1 Co-ords on 27 Aug 2004 - 07:52
I also had that problem... ftp://us-web%5CP... is actually ftp://us-web*P... (domain*user) so try loggin in to the site manually. Solved my problem! (*=back slash)

Link works perfect for me, 300KB/s and rising. Im using Mozilla, is that what you were using?
#10 blowdart on 27 Aug 2004 - 17:03
Lightweight install? Thank goodness. I don't need the firewall, or the awful pop3 only email scan, so why the heck should they be sitting there on my hard disk

I didn't have a problem downloading it yesterday. I was kind of concerned because the installation file was over two times larger than '04 was. I was hoping TM didn't go the way of Norton and bloated it out. But the computer seems to be running the same as when '04 was installed--- it just has more features.

At the first few boots, it took a while to initialize at boot up. But when I started it up this evening, it was a lot quicker. Other than that it looks like a good beta
#12.1 DarkRyu on 28 Aug 2004 - 20:07
I thought 04' was Bloated. Why does their Antivirus Solution have to be only available in a Suite: Firewall, AV, Spyware, WI Fi Detection?, ? Certainly they are considering offering them in modular form too; AKA Antivirus Only. This will be my first "feedback". 04' gave me an error when i attempted to install it with my existing firewall software configured. AKA, it Did not like my Firewall and said i'd have to remove it before installing any Trend-Micro components.
#12.2 DarkRyu on 28 Aug 2004 - 20:16
HOLY COW, I just saw the Anti-Virus only option. Cheers

wow big improvements
Wi-Fi detection stuff is cool
Ad-ware scan is great, detected a lot of stuff Ad-Aware SE 1.03 Professional didnt find

Overall nice job guys

Same here, found some stuff Adaware and Spybot didn't pick up. The only one I have a question about is one trojan called Brutforce.A. I cannot find any info on this trojan but the name doesn't sound friendly, lol.

What I meant by bloated was that the extra features would drag the computer down like NIS did on my computer. In fact, when I used to click on the TM icon in the system tray there was a a couple of seconds hesitation before the TM window came up. Now it is almost simultaneous (when I had NIS it took almost 15 seconds before the NIS window came up).

I admit the firewall isn't so flashy as others. In fact it reminds me of XP's firewall as far as being silent (except it monitors outgoing unlike XP's). The only alerts I get are the more serious ones--three since I got TM last April. It passed every stealth test I tried on it plus TM updates the attack signatures for it. I like this "set it and forget it" kind of firewall, I don't need popup balloons to remind me it is working.

my Trend Micro 04 was giving me problems last few days.. the pccguide.exe was using 99% CPU all the time soo i uninstalled it n installed awast!.. maybe i shud check this one out
#15 gaurav on 29 Aug 2004 - 21:33
Is it really better than AVs like Kaspersky AV, NOD32, Symantec AV Corp(Which i have right now)? I will be reformatting my HDD, so i wanted a very nice and efficient AV.
#16 mtnsteve on 30 Aug 2004 - 02:33
I just removed Norton Internet Security 2004 and installed PC-cilliin Internet Security 2005 beta. I have had problems with Norton sometimes not loading the firewall and with the updates feature suddenly losing half of the items to be updated. I have had to reinstall it twice in the last two weeks.

After running the Trend Micro program I noticed a couple things right away, my computer seems to run quicker and boot faster. I ran the full test at PC Pitstop and my score went up by over 50 points, and when I checked my Internet speed it seems to be about 10/20 kbps faster....I'll need to average that out over a few days to be sure.

The only quirk so far seems to be the spyware scan, it seems to run in about 2 seconds, I cant be sure if it's really checking anything.

OK, My bad...I just realized that you have to turn on the spyware feature manually and check what you want it to scan for.

Hummmm, still takes only a couple seconds.....
