Ummm...this post is BULLCRAP.

Firefox 1.0 Preview Release is not going to be out till next week. DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING TILL YOU SEE THIS ANNOUNCED ON MOZILLA.ORG, WHICH THIS "RELEASE" IS NOT!!!

Ummm...ok, according to your logic, we should post this on software news everytime mozilla posts a nightly on its servers. I see...

It includes new features. Also, it states it is a beta in the article so do you really need to restate that and make yourself look stupid?
Quote this comment #1.6 Posted by elliot on 05 Sep 2004 - 17:08
It doesn't include new features, it includes a new version string. Nightly users have had these features for weeks (months?).

I've been using the odd nightly every week or so and I didn't have those features... doesn't mean they weren't there (though I don't recall seeing or hearing about them before this), but what I'm saying is that even to most nightly users they are new features.

not exactly true...

like those who mentioned above, it's just a pre-1.0 nightly build that u can download anytime, everyday
Quote this comment #1.9 Posted by elliot on 06 Sep 2004 - 12:08
Yeah? What features are you referring to that are were not there a week ago? Paul Thurrott reviewed a nightly on July 22 that had the new find bar. Almost all the new stuff was added around that time.

I must have been using the latest trunk, instead of branch.

this is 0.10PR Nightly, not 1.0 Beta.

Yeah, confused as to why you're posting a trunk.

Oh well. Thanks for the note that Firefox is nearing 1.0/

What is going to be new in v1.0?
Quote this comment #4.1 Posted by neoufo51 on 05 Sep 2004 - 10:54
-RSS support
-Updated look
-new search and find text in page toolbar (which look very cool)
-and basically a crapload of bugfixes, less than 200 to go before 1.0 can come out.

why even annouce a nightly?
Quote this comment #5.1 Posted by Fredde87 on 05 Sep 2004 - 10:49
because it is the first for 1.0?
Quote this comment #5.2 Posted by neoufo51 on 05 Sep 2004 - 10:51

This is misleading at best. There's still no Firefox 0.10 (1.0PR), which should be released next week. According to the Firefox tree schedule form planet mozilla:

Firefox 0.10 (1.0 PR)
0 days, 20 hours, 29 minutes
Monday, September 06, 2004 08:59:00

Firefox 1.0 RC1
14 days, 20 hours, 29 minutes
Monday, September 20, 2004 08:59:00

Firefox 1.0 RC2
28 days, 20 hours, 29 minutes
Monday, October 04, 2004 08:59:00

Firefox 1.0
35 days, 20 hours, 29 minutes
Monday, October 11, 2004 08:59:00

There won't be a beta, even though you could think about 1.0PR as a beta relase.
Anyway, I wouldn't really count on this schedule being set in stone, since there's a lot of job still to be done to get to RC status.
Quote this comment #6.1 Posted by neoufo51 on 05 Sep 2004 - 10:49
That 1.0 PR will probably be moved to Wednesday according to people on the Firefox forums.

in 1.0 will you be able to resume downloads after exiting firefox?
Quote this comment #7.1 Posted by nic on 05 Sep 2004 - 18:44
I hope so. The download manager looks really nice, but doesn't recoup very well when a download breaks.

I'll wait till Mozilla.org releases 1.0PR before I download. 0.9.3 is servering me very well.
Quote this comment #7.2 Posted by neoufo51 on 06 Sep 2004 - 08:25

I think Safari is far more better and faster than Firefox is, but I use it on my Windows box. There was first page news a few weeks ago, that there was much to discuss about Firefox' security in comparison with Internet Explorer.

This news item needs to be removed. It is VERY misleading. The official Preview Release will be out in a number of days. You can report it then. Nightlies are not for release to the general public nor do they deserve the high publicity this news item gives.

every single last version of firefox (and it's predecessor) so far rleeased has been a beta version. that's kinda what happenes when you have a 0.x release cycle.

duh.
Quote this comment #17.2 Posted by neoufo51 on 07 Sep 2004 - 08:23
Ummm...nightlies are NOT betas. They are VERY raw forms of a software that vary all the time. One nightly from 9/05 could be running fine, and the 9/06 nightly can have a new feature that crashes the browser and even cause a corrupted cache, lost bookmarks, etc. a beta version is one that is release after new features have been added LONG in advance and have ALL been tested enough for MAJOR bugs to be wiped out so a PUBLIC beta can be released.

Ergo...all 0.X releases are betas, but the nightlies are nightlies. The guy you are responding to is totally correct, so I don't know what you are trying "duh" to.

Urm no not at all. The Nightly builds would be classified as ALPHA's as its fresh untested code. The PR series would be BETA because its already been tested and checked in as tested code

Sorry Kiddo
Quote this comment #18.1 Posted by slang123 on 05 Sep 2004 - 18:49
sorry but it is you who is wrong. Alpha generally means a build for internal testing, whereas beta is for public testing. So all of the public releases are beta, they even say this themeselves on their site

since 20040901 aviary branch nightlys the version has been 0.10 (1.0PR) its not final of 1.0PR but very close, they changed the version numbers beforehand so that extension devs update the extensions for the 1.0 release. Please note though that installing any nightly after 20040831 will break a lot of extensions unless you go in and change the MaxVersion yourself.

Where is "Find As You Type" gone? Why did they remove it? I know there's Find Toolbar, but it is not the same (you have to open it first).

Press ' and you can find as you type. (this will only search links, but that was the 'old' find-as-you-type function.
If you want full text search will you type, goto Tools -> Advanced -> Use find as you type

Trickster¿ why don't you admit you made a MISTAKE and remove this news report. The last thing Mozilla.org needs is people using nightlies that don't know how to report bugs and all start complaining that it isn't working as they espected (because this nightly BREAKS almost ALL previous extentions that have not been updated for the v0.10 release!!!)

Calling it "1.0 beta" gives the impression that it's an actual release, not a nightly binary. A more apt article title would be "Firefox nightly binaries reach 1.0 PR".
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #30 Posted by Rengi on 07 Sep 2004 - 00:14
Just read the title of the page folks. It is as follows::

Index of /pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2004-09-04-08-0.9

That "0.9" means just what it says: 0.9 (series nightly)....

Nothing could be more clear. It is the screwed up Warp2search site that is misleading people with a false announcement.....
