Seems kinda bulky
#4.1 winxptwker on 13 Oct 2004 - 10:00
I disagree. It's about a 1mb download so I don't think it's bloated. It's only got every feature that a basic browser should have not every feature that they think people will use.

i disagree with your disagreement

i dont think he was referring to the WHOOPING 1mb download. i think he was referring to the screenshot that shows 100 buttons and internal windows (instead of TABS). the user interface is way too bulky and busy.

That's why it's fully customizable. If you are too scared to customize it for your personal use, then you should sell your computer.

There are tabs, look at the bottom.

true, its customizable, but 'out-of-the-box', the UI is ugly as sin

there's a difference between being customizable (a good thing), and having to customize it each time you load it up coz the defaults are ugly (a bad thing)

Firefox = Installation of 87 extensions to get what I want.

Avant = One install, and 5 minutes at most to customize to what I want.

Both = Same or close feature set.

Use Firefox. Problem Solved.

The problem with this hack (yes, that is all it is) is that it makes people believe that they are fixing Internet Explorer and making it more secure. However, many people seem to think it is its own browser, imune to all holes in IE.

Nobody thinks that at all. I use Avant because IE's render is faster than Firefox's, and Avant loads quicker than Firefox. Of course, IE's "problems" don't effect me because I patch up and don't go to uglydonkeysex.net

I have never seen IE render faster than FireFox. The only case it can do this is when a server is running ISS and the two cheat at HTTP making it 'faster' than by actually having the server and client do what the protocol tells you to do. This is the only case it can render faster as MS has programmed in a cheat.

It loading faster is also another cheat. Internet Explorer, like Windows media player never truly quit. When you boot Windows, around all of these two program's libraries are already initialized. FireFox on the other hand gets no such built in advantage, and like WinAMP or iTunes, it must start on it's own when you choose to run it. And IE's problems do affect you, especially that latest jpg exploit. That was so easy that I saw forums everywhere where someone had that in their signature. You don't even have to go to bad sites to break IE.

So in summary, you are wrong.
#5.3 TGD on 13 Oct 2004 - 15:36
In summery, I don't care about your rational. If IE is quicker because Windows loads it at startup, I don't give a damn. All I know is it's starts up faster for me than Firefox. I don't care about the technicalities on the matter.

That JPEG exploit? You mean the one that was fixed in SP2 weeks before it became news?

IE renders things faster in MY experience. If you can show me some stats that show Firefox is faster, I don't care. I'm not pro-IE, I'm not anti-Mozilla. I'm pro-me, and I wouldn't use Avant unless I'd tried other browsers and decided this was the best one for me.

with 2ghz and 3ghz and ultra high speel DSL and cable connections, WHY THE HELL ARE YOU ARGUING ABOUT WITH WEB BROWSER LOADS SITES QUICKER??

what are you rounding up to? .00001 seconds?

christ! we're talking WEBSITES people, not Doom3. ugh...

Does every new beta that gets released need to make it to the front page? Why not post betas in Back Page News in the forum and reserve the front page for the final releases?

RC is out (10.0.025).

Dang, already up to version 10 and still the most cluttered browser interface-addon around.
