Opera 7.60 Preview 2 has just been released for both Windows and Unix variants, thanks to Zkal for the heads up.

This release has quite many interface changes, including the startup menu, toolbars and menubars, something which has been commented on a lot both by Opera and users of other browsers. The voice recognition feature is now a separate download, which starts once you enable the feature within the browser, instead of coming pre-installed. Onto the changelog:
  • Simplified first start-up dialog.
  • Menus have undergone a significant simplification.
  • Major changes have also been done to toolbars and button setup.
  • "Block unwanted pop-ups" is now enabled by default.
  • Option to simply press Enter in a http-auth dialogue to use the first stored Wand login has been restored.
  • Possibility to use security password without reentering every time has been restored.
  • Fixed issue with text selection for justified text.
  • "Continue from last time" remembers fit-to-width setting.
  • Several minor focus issues solved.
  • Space + Shift when a forms button is focused should submit in the background.
  • Added Alt + Backspace as shortcut for "undo".

bad at rendering pages
#1.1 the_maggot on 26 Oct 2004 - 20:36
No, good at rendering pages.

Website builders bad at making pages.
#1.2 sin™ on 26 Oct 2004 - 20:49
Actually, VERY good at rendering pages.
#1.3 PimpinWithAaron on 26 Oct 2004 - 22:25
does that mean firefox is bad at rendering pages as well
just cause opera refuses to go outside the standards doesnt mean the web has to turn for them, dont get me wrong i love opera, but its for this reason i moved to FX
#1.4 123_kid on 27 Oct 2004 - 03:59
Opera does go outside the standards. In fact, they've invested time and money into a whole mode designed to go outside the standards. Typically, if the document doesn't have a doctype, Opera goes into quirks mode.
#1.5 kizzaaa on 27 Oct 2004 - 19:40
I think Opera's engine is by far one of the best, it's the best engine/software I've used.
#2 kool4 on 26 Oct 2004 - 18:06
i wanted a hotkey for undoing stuff.
alt + bkspace is a good hotkey i gues.s.
#3 vetToxicfume on 26 Oct 2004 - 18:14
Wow, this release *is* indeed a major change in UI, after transferring my profile/preferences, got it working I went totally
(2 replies) #4 Raum on 26 Oct 2004 - 18:18
Rendered pages correctly and quickly for me when I used the last major released. I think I'll purchase it when this new version comes out, it seemed to be a very good browser and incredibly slim and efficient compared to Firefox. Firefox feels so slow and bloated compared to Opera when I use it. such as when I click to lod a page in FF, then try to switch tabs, it'll have some lag sometimes, but in Opera that never occurred. also, clicking back in Opera brought me to the previous page INSTANTLY, whereas Firefox usually takes the same time going back as it does going to a new website. Might just be my machine, but that's how I feel about the two.

Could someone post a screenshot of the UI changes? Thanks.
#4.1 sentio on 26 Oct 2004 - 20:17
Opera uses cache-operations extensively.
#4.2 ryusen on 27 Oct 2004 - 19:51
I'm thinking the same thing myself. I really have two things i want to see.
1) the M@ mail client needs to have the contact information as an indexed DB, liek it's mail messages. This way, you could have multiple email address for th esame contact and have the same contact belong to multiple groups. I find it funny that they did it for the messages and not the contacts.

2) I want to see the ability to add extentions like Firefox. Opera has enough of a base, that this coudl be a real boon for the browser. I really like the way Opera handles tabs and it's speed, but some of the FF extentions are just two handy to ignore.
(2 replies) #5 groingo2 on 26 Oct 2004 - 18:39
Opera's speed thrill is always short lived after you continually encounter site after site that either won't open, won't function or is simply so messed up because of Opera's age old "standards compliacnce" excuse.
Pass on this one too.
#5.1 nekropia on 26 Oct 2004 - 21:39
"Opera's age old "standards compliacnce" excuse"

This is a BLATANT LIE. Opera NEVER blamed standards compliance.

In fact, Opera has en ENTIRE RENDERING MODE dedicated to handling badly coded sites:

http://www.opera.com/docs/specs/doctype/

Firefox is a nice browser, but you MINDLESS FANBOYS who spread lies about Opera are just turning me off it!

Fact is that if you browse using Proxomitron to hide from sites that you are using sites, it works just about EVERYWHERE. That's not because Opera doesn't handle bad code. As shown above it DOES, and they are making efforts to MAKE SURE it does. It's because outdates or malicious scripts SPECIFICALLY detect Opera and send it broken code. If you send it the EXACT same thing Firefox gets, it works PERFECTLY.

Now STOP spreading FUD!!
#5.2 Miran on 27 Oct 2004 - 05:59
Very well put, Nekropia. Just because you like firefox (and I do), doesn't automatically make Opera a bad browser. You should really support both Opera and Firefox, if you at all value having a choice.

I like it, the status bar takes over the address bar when a page is loading and that's a pretty cool new feature. I haven't notived any major UI changes, but I've been using Preview 1 for awhile now since it supported GMail.
#6.1 AfroTrance on 27 Oct 2004 - 06:21
That feature is in 7.5 aswell, just have to go view-toolbars-progress bar-show inside address bar. Unless you mean the actual 'status bar' which just shows you a url when you hover a link, not the progess bar that shows your page download progess.
(1 reply) #7 superjoppe on 26 Oct 2004 - 18:51
now even better than firefox than before
#7.1 GBUASH on 26 Oct 2004 - 19:46
<hands you a flame sheild> we must prepare for the onlought.... anyone not Firefox on here is mobbed.
(1 reply) #8 [X]-bYtE on 26 Oct 2004 - 19:18
Sweet. I like the changes so far I like the close buttons on the tabs. Opera is getting better and better!
#8.1 R1CK13 on 26 Oct 2004 - 20:54
SO do i, but i wish they left the Min Max Close buttons at the top for each tab (underneath the main titlebar).
(1 reply) #9 cjrciadt on 26 Oct 2004 - 19:35
Opera's close attention to details continues to impress me.
#9.1 kizzaaa on 27 Oct 2004 - 20:09
same
#10 nFHQ|MaTrIx on 26 Oct 2004 - 20:22
awesome
#11 johnston on 26 Oct 2004 - 20:44

yay its here been using 7.6 preview 1 since it first came out and its a big upgrade from 7.5, been waiting eagarly for preview 2 and thankfully it has come fixes any bugs i had, and adding many new features compared to preview 1 which are just superb. Opera are yet again extending their lead as the best browser imho...

(1 reply) #12 Netaku on 26 Oct 2004 - 20:53
I used to love Opera, but left it for Mozilla. I wonder how different it is now from when I was last using it. It really is a nice browser.
#12.1 worbd on 27 Oct 2004 - 08:30
It changed a LOT from 7.23 to 7.50, and now it's changed quite a bit from 7.50 to 7.60p2 again. Give it a try!
(1 reply) #13 Daninku on 26 Oct 2004 - 20:56
I use both FF and opera, 2 future browsers Hope Opera will be free oneday as FF. Downloading now
#13.1 Daninku on 26 Oct 2004 - 21:07
GREAT GREAT GREAT lovin it nice UI. I will continue using FF and Opera though.
#14 gflores on 26 Oct 2004 - 20:59
Opera is truly a great browser. Its speed and caching amazes me. However, I like Firefox's extensions and full customizations.
#15 caerma on 26 Oct 2004 - 21:29
great news...
(1 reply) #16 TheBlackGuy on 26 Oct 2004 - 22:28
I just have one thing to ask why do people try to compare this to firefox? Shouldnt they compare it to mozilla?
#16.1 Soleen on 27 Oct 2004 - 05:52
if you compare opera to mozilla, mozilla would loose almost in everything... So people prefer to compare opera to firefox
(1 reply) #17 greg098 on 27 Oct 2004 - 00:08
i perfer firefox
#17.1 Soleen on 27 Oct 2004 - 05:53
Congratulations!

#19 sullysnet on 27 Oct 2004 - 00:22
GOOD release like the new changes and it seems a little faster on my machine
#20 stisev on 27 Oct 2004 - 01:01
Opera is the best browser EVER

These firefox fanboys are the same idiots who used AOL back in the day. Firefox is a decent browser but Opera is better. Stop trolling in this thread.

God damn retards.
#21 Raum on 27 Oct 2004 - 01:45
So anyone got a picture of the new UI for me? Don't feel like isntalling this just yet.
(1 reply) #22 cork1958 on 27 Oct 2004 - 02:07
I had the first preview installed on all my machines for about a week to test it out. As usual, Opera freaking rocks! No need for a preview 2, IMO. Preview 1 never once crashed, hung, slowed down, died, nothing. First time I've EVER installed a beta/preview version of any program, but just couldn't wait to get a taste of it. Just waiting for that final version to come out and I'll be installing it on all 5 of my boxes.

As far as sites that won't work, the ONLY ones I know of and can't get to work by changing preferences are all MS sites, and we know how they feel about Opera.

Honestly, if Opera were free, you wouldn't be hearing hardly a squeak about FF.
#22.1 maulia on 27 Oct 2004 - 04:32
It often crashes in my machine, no matter how many times I reformat my computer (well not very often it crashes, but once every couple of weeks or so)
Still loves Opera though
#23 ATsirogiannis on 27 Oct 2004 - 02:47
Opera is the best! I have used firefox before and still keep coming back to Opera, and with this release its definately competitive and able to offer more than FF does. Love the update simplicity of the UI and how popups get blocked by default. Rending is faster and has fixed some CSS and javascript issues I had. I can't see myself ever using any other browser ever, period!
#24 soldier1st on 27 Oct 2004 - 02:54
opera wins over ff hands down
i bet this will be better than preview 1
gonna install it n see what'd ifferent from preview 1
i tried firefox,i just plain hate it,for one thing u gotta add stuff to it that opera already has
true ff is free but opera will be free one day, well pcpitstop and windowsupdate r the only 2 sites that don't work with opera(hotmail works for opera)
#25 jcgamer60 on 27 Oct 2004 - 03:35
Opera remains my number browser. I noticed alot of bug fixes in this preview 2
#26 soldier1st on 27 Oct 2004 - 04:11
this new one seems da best
the x beside the tab is nice
the way it was changed it a bit better, all the noob opera ppl can find more without having to explore to find it

GoGoGo!!!
(1 reply) #28 Vice King on 27 Oct 2004 - 05:23
i think this is going to be final.. i might move from Avant to Opera.. although i think its really retarded to pay $40 for a browser. i'll just get a key for that.
so far this is super fast and i like it a lot.. it'll take me a few weeks to make my decision.
#28.1 Fit4130Rider on 27 Oct 2004 - 05:36
OH NO YOU DIDN"T JUST SAY THAT YOU"D USE A KEYGEN!!!!!!

Actually, I could care less.

I got my $40 bucks somewhere (shifty eyes)

But opera kicks every other browsers ass. Hands down.
#29 soldier1st on 27 Oct 2004 - 05:33
well avant is build on the ie engine, opera isin't,true some sites don't work with opera

Getting better with each release. I like the trimmed-down effect of the menus. Makes things a little easier. Now to see if they have fixed me pet peeve: Trying to delete more than one cookie at a time by using CTRL or SHIFT +Mouse
(1 reply) #32 Gulfisland on 27 Oct 2004 - 13:54
HOLY ****!!!!!!!!!
wow I am sooo impressed with this software.. it loads pages even faster.. its like im loading pages from memory!!!

I love the way it loads pages too, so smooth and fast... and now works with Gmail...!!!

love it

edit/ WOW loads Gmail sooooo fast I love it
#32.1 sin™ on 28 Oct 2004 - 14:16
MY SAME reaction. Man, this thing REALLY seems like a whole totally new browser now. I used to use Opera all the time. Then moved over to FF for a lil while (to try something diff) but hot damn, this thing has come such a long way, i've fallen back in love with it. Bye Bye FF.
#33 soldier1st on 27 Oct 2004 - 15:01
maybe opera should have the option to install the operaadfilter instead of having to dl it
#34 Galley on 27 Oct 2004 - 15:42
WooHoo! Now that Opera supports Gmail, I no longer have to use Firefox for that one specific task.
#35 jnr on 27 Oct 2004 - 18:53
I really like this new Opera release, BUT unfortunately 7.60p2 gives me an error when it has to load my router´s web configuration adsl usage graph java applet!!!
Opera 7.54 loads the applet without a problem. I have JRE 5.0.
(3 replies) #36 kizzaaa on 27 Oct 2004 - 20:16
I love Opera, I'd never go back to MSIE or FF. I don't think I'll try this beta, I'd prefer to use a stable build.
#36.1 meccs on 27 Oct 2004 - 20:39
Gamespot.com is still completely messed up

(f.e. look at THIS PAGE) Scroll up and down a few times ...
#36.2 maulia on 27 Oct 2004 - 23:41
Roger that meccs.. but I still love Opera he-eh
#36.3 sin™ on 28 Oct 2004 - 14:18
Gives FF probs as well. Not as trippy as Opera but still...
I'm very impressed with Opera and happy to be going back to them.
#37 alan8it on 27 Oct 2004 - 21:38
One thing I noticed is that I cannot minimize a tab by left clicking on it. In all previous versions, that functionality existed.

On the bright side, I really like the Trash bin! Shows all of your Closed windows, as well as any Popups that were blocked!
#38 tiwaris on 28 Oct 2004 - 10:08
Opera was and is and perhaps will be a decent browser. I often use it to surf net, primarily to avoid spywares/adwares blah blah.
#39 Gulfisland on 28 Oct 2004 - 16:54
QUOTE

Its not the browsers fault... its the web designers fault... the page is build with tables, and has two seperate ones with bad code between... prob built with Front page 2000

I love the trash bin... it saves me soo much time, and lets me have only a few visable tabs, easier to use.
