- downloaded at 1.5mb/s how that was amazing 2 and a half second download
-
#3.1 Posted by IGx89 on 04 Nov 2004 - 17:16
- I got ~8mbps, about 1mBps; I love fast mirrors

Unfortunately, it's completely messing up when accessing my Hotmail webmail, so I think I'll be sticking with IE for the foreseeable future...

- WOW, you get 1 milliByte/sec, that's awesome dude! (ps. learn the prefixes...)
-
#3.3 Posted by IGx89 on 04 Nov 2004 - 17:26
- well, at least I didn't mix up bit/Byte like that first guy

Hmm, though CNET also uses mbps, and DSLReports uses mbits...

same thing was said about rc1QUOTE This should be the last official release of Firefox before the big 1.0 launch date on November 9th. -
#5.1 Posted by Smigit on 04 Nov 2004 - 17:52
- actually no, RC2 had been on the blocks for months and only recently did they say it wont be released unless it was needed (read no problems in RC1). Since there was a problem or two with RC1 they have released RC2. This will be the last release before final.

QUOTE what on earth did you just say?
his post makes perfect sense to me...
QUOTE http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=25210&category=main
from that page:
QUOTE This could very well be the last official release of Firefox before the big 1.0 launch date on November 9th.
Thats what a release candidate is: a candidate for release. So anything with RC in the name "could very well" be the last before release. Now, if you bothered to look at the official firefox roadmap, it has been there for a loong time that there would be RC1 and 2, followed by the final. They pick between the candidates to release, or just fix the second in progression to the final.

- I can't seem to go back pages. The back button stays grayed out

-
#13.2 Posted by Dirtie on 04 Nov 2004 - 20:06
- I've had the same problem before, but generally it can be fixed just by clicking on the window to bring it into focus (or on the webpage). The one thing I don't like at the moment is that when you choose File > New Window or press Ctrl+n it opens up your homepage not the page you are currently on.

- If you had got your head out of your ass and bothered to read anything at all of the newspost, you would've noticed that it says in the second sentence..

#15 Posted by joshtheowl on 04 Nov 2004 - 17:53
- Did they fix that annoying "document contains no data" error yet?
-
#15.1 Posted by dismuter on 04 Nov 2004 - 18:09
- Indeed, they should do like IE, make some kind of error page and allow us to refresh the page to try again.
With the "document contains no data" message box, it bothers my reading in other tabs, and I can't even refresh the page that couldn't load. -
#15.2 Posted by joshtheowl on 04 Nov 2004 - 18:17
- You can make it display pages instead:
in address bar, type:
about:config
find the setting called "browser.xul.error_pages.enabled" and set it to true.

- LOL the ULTIMATE browser is so **** it has to release another version within days of the 1.0 release!!!
-
#23.1 Posted by Yochanan on 04 Nov 2004 - 20:20
- STFU ignorant n00b! Is it better to release a couple beta versions so users can let them know about bugs before the final release, or release the final version with lots of bugs, and then not fix them for 3 months like some other company we know?
-
#23.2 Posted by elliot on 04 Nov 2004 - 20:41
- Oh I love Ben_G's fanboisms.
I guess releasing new builds every day is a hard concept to grasp for a user of Internet "5 years old" Explorer. -

On second thouhgt, maybe it was doing me a favour. -
#23.10 Posted by p4n0z on 04 Nov 2004 - 21:09
- Ben_G i can understand why you don't like firefox my friend..
it doesn't crash every 5 pages, it doesn't eat up all your taskbar area when you open multiple windows,
it doesn't consume 10's MB of memory to open a simple html page,
you can't test your T3 downloading it
it wasn't written by big-buck paid "programmers" but by people on their FREE time,
you don't have to pay for it, nor does anyone oblige you to have it installed on your pc,
it doesn't need 5 updates per month for "security issues" exmm i don't remember any worms exploiting it and so many more...
you must hate it... i mean really hate it.. r u by any means on gate's payroll? -
#23.11 Posted by RosUFO on 04 Nov 2004 - 21:20
- What I don't understand about people like Ben_G is that if he doesn't like Firefox then stop reading posts about it and leave it for those who like and understand it. He is wasting his time and our time.
Just let him keep using IE and AOL and let all that spyware and ad-ware take over his machine and we will never hear from him again. -
#23.12 Posted by Ben_G on 04 Nov 2004 - 22:08
- all i can say is hahahahahahhahahahahaha! ROFL!!!!!!! what a laugh

#23.13 Posted by Ben_G on 04 Nov 2004 - 22:09

Beat the noob! Grab your pitchforks and torches!

#25 Posted by SniperX on 04 Nov 2004 - 21:53
- Is it me and my lack of Firefox knowledge, or is that really awful find bar incapable of searching text in a form's textarea?
Sure it seems to search pages ok but if you try skinning IPB forums and want to search in the CSS or HTML with it, it just doesn't work.
Am I missing a setting somewhere?

- I think p4n0z put it best with this comment:
QUOTE Ben_G i can understand why you don't like firefox my friend..

I personally have used many browsers over my 12 year run on the WWW, and lately have been guilty of using IE simply because it was conveinient and built-in to Windows. However now that the browser wars appear to be returning, I too have started looking around for alternatives believing that there MUST be something better than IE... I've tried Opera 7.5 and thought it was "interesting" but I found it too unpredictable when viewing certain sites. Tried going back to Netscape 7.2, but that just made me want to puke just like it did in the past.
My first experience with Firefox was with 1.0 PR1. I admit it caught my eye, but I found it had problems with the tabbed browsing features and, just like someone else mentioned here, had significant resource and/or slowdown issues with a lot of sites. However I did not discount it and kept it on my system. I just downloaded RC2 and am actually using it right now to reply to this column, and I must admit, if the final is this robust and stable on Nov 9th, I will be switching over (for now) my older laptop and run it here full-time to see how it performs. If its a good run, all my systems will be running Firefox from now on.
People like Ben_G seem to me to have an IQ of less than 20, or are so prejudice against new software or open-source software such as Firefox, that they should have their Internet privledges taken away and locked up behind bars. I admittedly too am a little sceptical about open-source software, and tend to examine such applications with a very fine toothed comb, but I try to keep an open mind and keep my mouth shut before I make any kind of comments about it. This is all I can say to Ben_G without sounding like him... Try going thru something new VERY carefully with an eye for detail BEFORE shooting your mouth open publicly and making yourself into a total jackass in front of the world, which is basically what you have done here.

- Ok.. I used the last build of Firefox.. I liked it.. but is it just me or does it seem a little rough?? I mean like fonts and stuff like that.. I'm sure I'd get used to it but that's just something I noticed.. Scroll boxes seem unstable.. or maybe I had a bad Java install since I had to remove Java Virtual Machine.. Well I'll download this release and test it out.. see what I get.... I love open source apps.. Later!

- Oh, just a little follow-up post from me in response to "IGx89" in regards to Firefox messing up Hotmail... I just logged onto my Hotmail account using 1.0 RC2 without a single hitch. As long as you permit all cookies from msn.com, passport.com, and any other related MS site, Hotmail loads flawlessly in Firefox, including all the page formatting, scripts, dialogs and such.

- Not sure it really qualifies as a bug per se, but why does setup insist on creating an empty folder called Mozilla Firefox in my start menu when I have not selected the start menu icon? Honestly! It just looks unprofessional.

#33 Posted by Solarix on 05 Nov 2004 - 01:37
- screw this version RC1 never crashed once now RC2 is give me random crashes
-
#33.1 Posted by -=MagMan=- on 05 Nov 2004 - 01:57
- I never tried RC1, but so far I've been using RC2 all-day on my Dell Latitude CPiR 400GT laptop without a single hitch... And by all-day I mean all-day, without closing, just continuous use so I could put it thru the paces.
The most likely cause of random crashes is actually with either A) poorly written plug-ins that aren't 100% Firefox compatible or B) websites that don't conform to W3C HTML specification properly.
When and where did RC2 crash on you? I want to see if I can duplicate the problems... -
#33.2 Posted by Solarix on 05 Nov 2004 - 14:05
- well i have never used any extentions or newer themes ive always left it alone, usually happens when i ether have more than 5 tabs or least one page that has alot more info on it than most, (lole 100+ images)
-
#33.3 Posted by -=MagMan=- on 05 Nov 2004 - 21:54
- Ahhhhh, so your browsing truth finally comes out eh Solarix?
I do admit I am guilty of viewing similar pages on sites like www.carbabeforum.com and www.offtopic.com
and even on pages with that many images it hasn't crashed on me yet. I've had it open 6 tabs so far, one of which is a site I publish myself, and can safely say it hasn't been unstable on me, even on this P2-400 laptop
The best thing you could try, as I've found this to clear up a multitude of problems in "some" cases, is to first uninstall Firefox COMPLETELY (making sure to eliminate any "Mozilla" folders/entries from your "Documents and Settings/<your user name>" folder), completely uninstall any Sun installation of Java, and then goto www.java.com and download the latest Java package version available, and then repeat your installation of Firefox once you have a fresh Java install online.

Mozilla has posted the second Firefox 1.0 release candidate on their FTP servers. This should be the last official release of Firefox before the big 1.0 launch date on November 9th.

In European terms, this figure is likely to be nudging 1.5 million, while US figures could well be in the same ball-park. To sell over three million copies across the world in its first few days on sale would be a truly unprecedented feat for Rockstar, and probably sets a new benchmark for consumer entertainment launches, never mind videogames, with each copy costing consumers an average of UKP 35.45 (according to ChartTrack data).
In gross revenue terms, the game would have generated around UKP 24 million in the UK alone over the weekend, and projected across the world that figure could be as much as UKP 106 million, or put in international currency terms, $195.5 million or 153.97 Euro. Put in context, if a movie were to gross that much at the box office, it would instantly be classed among the all-time greats - that's how big Rockstar's game has become.
Put into further context, ChartTrack figures reveal that only 10 PS2 titles have sold more in their whole lifetimes - two of those being the previous GTA titles, both of which have sold over one and half million copies each. San Andreas now appears to be on track to top them both and go on to become the fastest million seller ever in the UK.
