Thanks to smm5786 for the heads up

Mozilla has posted the second Firefox 1.0 release candidate on their FTP servers. This should be the last official release of Firefox before the big 1.0 launch date on November 9th.

The Firefox developers please ask that you look at the following areas:

Please test heavily:

  • site authentication (especially over SSL)
  • extension installation via update.mozilla.org and other sites.
  • the MacOS X builds, a number of theme changes have been made.
  • software update - we're making another attempt at this. We think we've got the bugs from RC1, so please test by following these instructions.

    Please continue to test:

  • the find toolbar
  • gecko and website rendering
  • migration from other browsers on first run
  • opening links in Firefox from external applications
  • focus interaction between tabs

No changelog at time of writing.

In European terms, this figure is likely to be nudging 1.5 million, while US figures could well be in the same ball-park. To sell over three million copies across the world in its first few days on sale would be a truly unprecedented feat for Rockstar, and probably sets a new benchmark for consumer entertainment launches, never mind videogames, with each copy costing consumers an average of UKP 35.45 (according to ChartTrack data).

In gross revenue terms, the game would have generated around UKP 24 million in the UK alone over the weekend, and projected across the world that figure could be as much as UKP 106 million, or put in international currency terms, $195.5 million or 153.97 Euro. Put in context, if a movie were to gross that much at the box office, it would instantly be classed among the all-time greats - that's how big Rockstar's game has become.

Put into further context, ChartTrack figures reveal that only 10 PS2 titles have sold more in their whole lifetimes - two of those being the previous GTA titles, both of which have sold over one and half million copies each. San Andreas now appears to be on track to top them both and go on to become the fastest million seller ever in the UK.

    I got ~8mbps, about 1mBps; I love fast mirrors

Unfortunately, it's completely messing up when accessing my Hotmail webmail, so I think I'll be sticking with IE for the foreseeable future...

actually no, RC2 had been on the blocks for months and only recently did they say it wont be released unless it was needed (read no problems in RC1). Since there was a problem or two with RC1 they have released RC2. This will be the last release before final.

This could very well be the last official release of Firefox before the big 1.0 launch date on November 9th.

Thats what a release candidate is: a candidate for release. So anything with RC in the name "could very well" be the last before release. Now, if you bothered to look at the official firefox roadmap, it has been there for a loong time that there would be RC1 and 2, followed by the final. They pick between the candidates to release, or just fix the second in progression to the final.

I've had the same problem before, but generally it can be fixed just by clicking on the window to bring it into focus (or on the webpage). The one thing I don't like at the moment is that when you choose File > New Window or press Ctrl+n it opens up your homepage not the page you are currently on.

Did they fix that annoying "document contains no data" error yet?
Quote this comment #15.1 Posted by dismuter on 04 Nov 2004 - 18:09
Indeed, they should do like IE, make some kind of error page and allow us to refresh the page to try again.
With the "document contains no data" message box, it bothers my reading in other tabs, and I can't even refresh the page that couldn't load.
Quote this comment #15.2 Posted by joshtheowl on 04 Nov 2004 - 18:17
You can make it display pages instead:

    in address bar, type:

    about:config

find the setting called "browser.xul.error_pages.enabled" and set it to true.

it doesn't crash every 5 pages, it doesn't eat up all your taskbar area when you open multiple windows,
it doesn't consume 10's MB of memory to open a simple html page,
you can't test your T3 downloading it
it wasn't written by big-buck paid "programmers" but by people on their FREE time,
you don't have to pay for it, nor does anyone oblige you to have it installed on your pc,
it doesn't need 5 updates per month for "security issues" exmm i don't remember any worms exploiting it and so many more...

I personally have used many browsers over my 12 year run on the WWW, and lately have been guilty of using IE simply because it was conveinient and built-in to Windows. However now that the browser wars appear to be returning, I too have started looking around for alternatives believing that there MUST be something better than IE... I've tried Opera 7.5 and thought it was "interesting" but I found it too unpredictable when viewing certain sites. Tried going back to Netscape 7.2, but that just made me want to puke just like it did in the past.

My first experience with Firefox was with 1.0 PR1. I admit it caught my eye, but I found it had problems with the tabbed browsing features and, just like someone else mentioned here, had significant resource and/or slowdown issues with a lot of sites. However I did not discount it and kept it on my system. I just downloaded RC2 and am actually using it right now to reply to this column, and I must admit, if the final is this robust and stable on Nov 9th, I will be switching over (for now) my older laptop and run it here full-time to see how it performs. If its a good run, all my systems will be running Firefox from now on.

People like Ben_G seem to me to have an IQ of less than 20, or are so prejudice against new software or open-source software such as Firefox, that they should have their Internet privledges taken away and locked up behind bars. I admittedly too am a little sceptical about open-source software, and tend to examine such applications with a very fine toothed comb, but I try to keep an open mind and keep my mouth shut before I make any kind of comments about it. This is all I can say to Ben_G without sounding like him... Try going thru something new VERY carefully with an eye for detail BEFORE shooting your mouth open publicly and making yourself into a total jackass in front of the world, which is basically what you have done here.

As long as you permit all cookies from msn.com, passport.com, and any other related MS site, Hotmail loads flawlessly in Firefox, including all the page formatting, scripts, dialogs and such.

I never tried RC1, but so far I've been using RC2 all-day on my Dell Latitude CPiR 400GT laptop without a single hitch... And by all-day I mean all-day, without closing, just continuous use so I could put it thru the paces.

The most likely cause of random crashes is actually with either A) poorly written plug-ins that aren't 100% Firefox compatible or B) websites that don't conform to W3C HTML specification properly.

When and where did RC2 crash on you? I want to see if I can duplicate the problems...

Ahhhhh, so your browsing truth finally comes out eh Solarix? I do admit I am guilty of viewing similar pages on sites like www.carbabeforum.com and www.offtopic.com and even on pages with that many images it hasn't crashed on me yet. I've had it open 6 tabs so far, one of which is a site I publish myself, and can safely say it hasn't been unstable on me, even on this P2-400 laptop

The best thing you could try, as I've found this to clear up a multitude of problems in "some" cases, is to first uninstall Firefox COMPLETELY (making sure to eliminate any "Mozilla" folders/entries from your "Documents and Settings/<your user name>" folder), completely uninstall any Sun installation of Java, and then goto www.java.com and download the latest Java package version available, and then repeat your installation of Firefox once you have a fresh Java install online.
