After two Preview Releases and 3 public Betas, it has finally arrived! Opera 8 Final - undoubtedly, the worlds fastest and the most standards compliant web browser suite, has been released. Opera has not yet officially announced the new release, but it is already made available via Opera's FTP. So far it only seems to be available for Windows, we will update as other operative system's versions appear.

No official Changelog has been posted yet, but Opera 8 has been touted to come with a bunch of new features such as User Javascript, Atom RSS feeds aggregator and native Scalable Vector Graphics(SVG) support. The current build is at 7561, whose changelog is expected to appear tomorrow along with an official announcement on Opera.com, we will keep you updated.

Current users of Opera 7 will receive a FREE upgrade to Opera 8, and with their new licensing scheme, a single license allows you to install ad-free versions of Opera on all the computers in your household.

UPDATE: Opera 8 has now gone official and is on Opera.com. The Changelog has also been made available.

“The dramatic and exponential growth of downloads and the time devoted by Skype users to communication via Skype demonstrates consumers’ and professionals’ enjoyment of our continual service improvements, and the viral power of our loyal user base,” added Zennström. “Skype is simple to use and easy to share, and the marketplace is responding by making Skype its first choice in Internet telephony.”

SkypeIn customers choose a country and area code and are assigned a regular telephone number. Anyone may call the SkypeIn user at their SkypeIn number wherever the user travels, providing huge cost savings compared to mobile roaming rates and flexibility for the Skype user to receive calls at home, at the office or at a hotel anywhere. Users may purchase up to three numbers from their home country in Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States during the beta period.

Skype Voicemail customers can receive a voicemail message up to 10 minutes long from any user or traditional phone. Skype Voicemail customers may record their own personalized voicemail greeting, playback their messages, even while offline, and send incoming calls to voicemail if they away, offline or simply busy on another call.

SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail complement Skype’s first premium service, SkypeOut, which allows global calling to public telephone numbers for local rates. More than 1.2 million people are now using SkypeOut. With the combination of SkypeIn and SkypeOut, users have new flexibility to expand modern communications and share those interconnection benefits with non-Skype users. Skype eliminates communications billing surprises by offering all premium services on a pre-paid basis.

Subscriptions for both pre-paid services are available in the Skype Store at www.skype.com. Three month SkypeIn subscriptions are available for €10 ($13)* and 12 month subscriptions for €30 ($39). Skype Voicemail subscriptions are available for €5 ($7) for 3 months or €15 ($19) for 12 months, and a free subscription is included with all SkypeIn orders.

Skype maintains its commitment to user-controlled privacy settings with the ability to block SkypeIn numbers. SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail betas are available with the latest versions of Skype for Linux, Mac OS X, Pocket PC and Windows platforms. The new downloads also include enhanced user benefits such as remote access to their personal contact lists and the ability to import contact lists from other desktop applications.

Skype is the leading VOIP-category product worldwide, with more than 35 million registered users increasing by more than 150,000 new users per day.

Excellent, this will probably just be bugfixes, no new features added.

Never know though, they might have snuck something in

Quote this comment #9.2 Posted by Lawrens on 18 Apr 2005 - 12:45
You just have to try it, Firefox and Opera feels different in the software itself. About speed, some likes firefox better, some likes opera, I never really compared the 2 side by side.

NetCaptor was the first tabbed browser. Of course, Opera does it better.

Where does Opera hide its user pref like the gui customizations?
Quote this comment #20.1 Posted by shen on 18 Apr 2005 - 14:14
a lot of the hardcore gui customizing has to be done by going into the opera directory and editing .ini's by hand. other things are done just by right-clicking on a part of the browser and selecting "customize..."

i've been waiting so long for this... so, so long...
Quote this comment #20.2 Posted by Marduk on 18 Apr 2005 - 14:16
Ah, I'm wondering which files all my customizations are stored from 8beta so I can easily move into final.
Quote this comment #20.3 Posted by nant on 18 Apr 2005 - 15:21
The various .ini files which store your changes (menu, toolbars, buttons, etc) are stored in the profile folder inside your Opera directory.

i'd rather have a free browser to be honest....
Quote this comment #21.2 Posted by nant on 18 Apr 2005 - 15:18
But it is free.
Nothing prevents you from fully using any of the features in Opera nor is it time limited.

Have you actually used Opera with text-ads for more than a minute? Does that honesty bothers you so much that you rather use a lesser product so long you will not see such a small strip of text-ads? If so, then too bad because IMHO the loss is all yours.
Quote this comment #21.3 Posted by nw_raptor on 18 Apr 2005 - 15:37
^^ the fact that the 'real deal' is shareware, doesn't mean Opera is not a good piece of software. I am a Firefox user, because I like open source software, but I admit that Opera constantly innovates in the browser-market, and that's something that deserves congratulations.

Yeah. But the loss of text ads doesn't bother me *that* much.
If you really miss them so much, there's a Firefox extension to add them.

Strangely enough, few wish to do.
Quote this comment #21.5 Posted by nant on 18 Apr 2005 - 19:42
That's not the point... The point was that the ads are not such a horrible thing that should stop you from trying the browser and give it a real evaluation.
Quote this comment #21.6 Posted by dolimite35 on 19 Apr 2005 - 02:43
the text ads are nothing, opera with slim text ads give me about the same open space for web pages as firefox...i alwasy liked opera and the free version is very good...

So in a way Opera if free like firefox...you can pay to upgrade opera to get no text ads, and you can pay firefox via donations...and if it firefox is so great why not help them out by donating a lil $ to help support it since some of you swear by it and get drama queen-ish with fists in the air...Either way both are free and both are good

Its only a browser not religion

There's a big difference between support and proper rendering. Opera still has a LOT of issues with rendering in my experience. I don't count it when designing at all. Too much of a hassle to deal with it. It feels like supporting IE 5.5 (which I don't do either).

well timdorr, my estimation of you has just dropped by a few thousand feet! any coder worth his salt knows that opera is the one browser one must support, especially as it's the browser of choice at most academic institutions. in addition, if you say your coding does not support opera, it is most definately not standards compliant, because anything which is standards complaint works perfectly with opera. not to mention that opera is not like i.e. 5.5 in the least.

that said, i must say that i've not come across any of your coding that doesn't work in opera so, that just seems to prove how supieror opera is! it takes coding which coders specifically create to not work in opera (as you said you do), and makes it work just perfectly, albeit a lot faster than any other browser. i dare you to try opera properly! its far more "native" feeling, has many more useful features (not least for web designers and coders, nontroppo's webdesign toolbar pops to mind immediately), and does it all a lot faster!

for benefit of others I edited operadefs.ini title=opera beta to title=opera

Considering this was a file installed by the new installer this was nothing to do with me putting in same dir I wonder if the leaked file wasnt actually final when first leaked.

Well i just tried it from FireFox, and the speed maybe fast but that maybe due to the Extentions in FireFox its probably as fast as IE. However the lack of exnteions and the hassle to switch between tabs and import bookmarks from firefox is rather innoying..

http://www.bmw.com to see how does it work...
First, it says "Incompatible browser". But then, you can ignore & continue on your own risk.
Going to let's say 7 series sedans, switching between colours, does it in grades vs. smooth in IE.

Went to Ford.co.uk afterwards. Compared to IE. Static links vs. dynamic full-fledged menu...

Of course anyone can say "those car makers sites suck"!
But if I have a BMW I wouldn't go to another site, I want exactly the one I own... ;-)

Some great features as well - but looks like speed is now worse than in version 7. May be it's just me...

I'm back to IE. Will leave Opera though and will give it a try some more times on different sites.
Quote this comment #36.1 Posted by DomFel on 19 Apr 2005 - 01:53
On bmw.com after you accept to back to the website and continue anyway, it loads just fine for me. Went to bmw.co.uk and bmw.it without problems.
Quote this comment #36.2 Posted by EastExpert on 19 Apr 2005 - 10:32
Yes, you can click through; the International version of the site allows you to preview cars "painted" into different colours. The switching between colours appears to be significantly faster in IE - I have no idea why... in Opera you can see the grades changing abruptly, in IE it's just a smooth transition.

My point was actually not just to complain about some sites, but to emphasize that a share of real-life sites that have "some" problems when displayed in Opera appears to be quite visible and that's a shame, 'coz I like Opera per se...

When will Microsoft quit their practices of sending corrupt stylesheets (or whatever) to Opera browsers
Quote this comment #39.1 Posted by EastExpert on 19 Apr 2005 - 10:39
Honestly, I think Microsoft doesn't care a tupence about browsers and therefore there's nothing to "quit" for them...

But when evaluating real-life performance of browsers, arguments like "corrupt stylesheets" (or whatever) don't hold water, because the main purpose of a browser is... surprise, to show web sites the user wants to see, closest to what the author wanted them to be (and not, ironically, "to conform to standards" or "to support CSS2/3/XUL/whatever".

So the best browser is, in a nutshell, the one that shows maximum number of sites in a manner closest to what they were meant to be by their author. Failing to do that, browser may still be neat and nice and "standard-compliant", but it wouldn't be the best suitable one for the real-world use.
Quote this comment #39.2 Posted by rm20010 on 19 Apr 2005 - 21:31

what's so great about firefox's interface? it feels clumsy to me! i mean, one has to either use a kb shortcut or use the menubar just to show the sidebar? not to mention that when you do see the sidebar, there's almost nothing useful you can do with it. oh, and the fact that the tabs are about 1/3 the width of one's screen. i can fit five tabs at least onto opera's tabbar before feeling cramped. oh ye, and the fact that it feels like someone has tried to emulate I.E., which makes it feel very "non-native" and gives it an interface which is slow as ****.

soz for the rant, but now i've got it out!
