Sounds good, I think i'll stay with Synmantec Antivirus though, AVG is good but it doesn't catch all viruses

HUh?

stezo2k you have no clue what your talking about....Norton is not superior than AVG. Norton takes up more ram and cpu resources since its uses an older base compared to other AV. The three top anti-virus are AVG, AVASt and Sophos.

Norton spends the most in Marketing and advertising. You would have to be a fool to think Norton is better.

Try buying AVG instead of using the trial while comparing it to your bought Norton?

Must be many people laughing their asses off for the Post you wrote..lmao

the difference in AVG trial and the AVG paid for, is that it updates itself regularly . AVG and Avast have a stronger attack and denial on trojans than Norton. Today, its all about trojans and Popups.

Bell, At&t, Verizon, Shaw Canada, Telus Canada, Aussitel all uses AVG for their servers and hubs not Norton. period

get your facts straight stezo2k you must be American or just dumb?

Yeah, I was one of those who laughed my ass off , Norton sucks COMPLETELY, I tried installing some Nortona apps just yesterday, even the corporate edition was slow (way better than the normal Norton still), and it is really really hard to uninstall. AVG is completely invisible, on startup and on normal system state. AVG is the best, and second I would rate Kaspersky, I like that too.

On the firewall thing, I'm not really sure they can make a good one, Zonealarm does a pretty damn good job, but then again you never know .

Norton is Extrucatingly slow and hard on system resources.

AVG is merely slow and uses a lot of resources, I'll stick to NOD32 and Tiny PF

he said symantec, not norton. so that means he probably has a pirated corp edition.

Ummm... what the heck are you talking about? Grisoft, Alwil, and Sophos are not the top three antivirus companies. They are all in the mid-tier detection-wise. They aren't tops in any category.
KAV based AVs still dominate signature detection (+ upgrade frequency).
NOD32, Dr. Web, ArcaVir, BitDefender (with first implementation of HIVE), Norman are the main contenders in heuristics. (With the exception of Norman, all detect more than the "top three" without heuristics)

westcoastguy, your a jack@$$. You're opinion is one thing, being as @$$ is another. On another note AVG is in the middle with Kaspersky, F-Prot, NOD32 all being above it. Get YOUR facts straight. I do agree with how many resources Norton uses though. I use Norton on some computers and AVG on others. We use AVAST at school. Here is full list. LIST

For how long will this keep going? For how long i will have to hear THIS is better, or THAT is better, damn, what a useless debate. In MY opinion, i really like Nod32, and i do think Norton gets too much resources, but that doesnt mean NOD32 is the best or that Norton sucks, that only means i like one better. When you first make such a comment try to be less agressive, saying the other person is wrong because you like something more is just stupid.

And about AVG, i kind of like it, i dont like its UI though (the normal UI, not the free UI, which is even worse), but i used it sometime ago, so it could have changed. If i didnt prefer Nod, i would probably use AVG.

I totally aggree with you westcoast... Seriously... I've done this virus business for uh... Goin on 7 or 8 years now... and every year is different.. but currently I completely agree with you for the best... I'd equate Norton users to the same league of people as AOL users... I was LOL'n after reading your response but again I totally agree...

You can get Symanetc Antivirus 9 Client through university license as well.

Symanetec is like a clean version of Norton Antivirus. No slowdown, good detection rate. However, I use AVG though since I changed jobs (who gave me SAV9).

Cool! This is well getting installed on the machine at work tomorrow!

I love the small system-resource-footprint that AVG has, hopefully they will have done the same with their firewall.

Dougal.

I've been using AVG pro (paid) for a year and it works just fine. I was always a NAV user and while I had no complaints with the workings of NAV I never liked it's 'bloatness'. Symantec seems to put all kinds of crap everywhere for all it's products. AVG is lean and mean as they say.

I tried the new beta and I wonder if the firewall is related to Kerio's Personal Firewall which I also use and which AVG has a special deal with. You can get both products together for a hugh discount. I saw some similarities in the new AVG Firewall and with Kerio.

It's amazing how no one ever mentions ZoneAlarm Suite's antivirus. I've been using it since it came out and I've found it to be totally reliable. I've not had a single infection of any sort while running it. Resource-wise, it's mid-range, using around 20MB on my system.
Quote this comment #7.1 Posted by sodapop on 24 Apr 2005 - 20:58
I'm amazed no one mentioned Kaspersky. Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal has a very strong (too strong for my liking) firewall built right, and most people know it's one of the top best. At best it takes 7MB of ram and I rarely see it using any CPU cycles, even though it catches everything I through at it, even spyware.

I like my windows firewall though..

Yeah I like (and use) AVG AV (free) but I don't see me needing anything more than my Router hardware firewall and Windows' Firewall for now.

Windows Firewall doesn't block outbound traffic though.

Pc-cillian 2005 blows away all these anti-virus programs. www.trendmicro.com

Pc-cillian? ah yes I see, thats a new 'feature'
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #10 Posted by norseman on 25 Apr 2005 - 00:30
pc-cillian sucks my left and norton sucks my right nut. Having worked on thousands of computers for geek squad I have found AVG, NOD32 and Kaspersky to be very good products. Mcafee and Norton being the worst 2.

I must say that I like AVG and am currently testing the Beta with the firewall. It is working good for me. Mcafee, Computer Associates, Norton, Sygate firewall suck big time. I used to like Norton but since they started this activation crap I do not want any part of if.

BTW MS is going to have a difficult time pushing Longhorn off on everybody because it too will be a piece of crap like everything else they build.
Quote this comment #11.1 Posted by Skyfrog on 25 Apr 2005 - 16:20
Well you started out well enough with your reply about AVG, but you blew it when you went completely off topic with that stupid comment about Microsoft and Longhorn.

If your going to be a troll at least try to be good at it; I give it 0 out of 10.

I think it depends on how people have their PCs set up, and what they use them for. I used to run Norton AV on my old PC with no problems, speed was fine etc. At work i use AVG due to the fact that we have a corporate license, no problems here.

I know someone who runs the latest norton AV/FW package and it has never slowed his PC down when running in the background.

But now at home I run Mcafee because I have a free license through Uni, it has never let me down, it doesnt slow me down, or use up much in terms of resources when it's scanning files on access.

I'm not siding with any one AV product, sure they all have their faults. I myself have expereinced infections that cannot be detected/repaired by one package, but can be repaired by another.

it's "each to their own" at the end of the day

There are no AV programs capable of catching ALL virus. No matter how much you update. Any AV used with safe surfing techniques will keep your system safe.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #14 Posted by pctoolbin on 26 Apr 2005 - 05:46
Well, i am going to buck the entire reply feel here and not complain about some AV program or promote what I use. I'd just like to see some screenshots of the new beta of this....(preferably of their firewall and features they offer)....the AVG site seems devoid of any screens of the firewall.....

Thanks in advance.

What annoys me about the non-free antivius scanners is that you only get a yearly subscription. I don't really feel like putting down $40 or so every year for a virus scanner. But enough people are evidently ok with that model.
