The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks computers running Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom—and helps remove any infection found. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed.

Microsoft releases an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month. New versions are available through this Web page, Windows Update, and the Microsoft Download Center

compared to a full featured AV or AS program this isn't much good. but if you're getting auto updates, or visiting the microsoft update site there really is no reason not to run it... just in case

edit: list of 'families cleaned' - http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/families.mspx

Well, supposedly, this tool does an excellent job of removing spyware. From what I hear its better than SpyBot or Ad-Aware.

I've been using it since it was released, it hasn't had to remove anything, but I run it weekly (along with Ad-Aware/Spybot/Anti-Virus scans) just to make sure my PC is free of nasties.

You are confusing this with Microsoft Antispyware

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

The malicious software tool only removes like 4 or 5 of the most prevalent viruses.

How can I start this tool?? I noticed it getting installed with Windows Update, but never found a corresponding start menu icon...

It activates itself when installed. If it finds nothing it deleats itself.
That way you are forced to download an updated version everytime.
