Some nine weeks after the official release of SUSE LINUX 9.3, an installable DVD image of the product has been released to SUSE's download mirrors. SUSE is one of the leading Linux distributions on the market; its latest release is compiled from over 1,000 popular software packages and provides an early look at some emerging technologies, such as Xen virtualization and Beagle desktop search. The DVD image is now available from a number of German and international mirror sites. As usual, a small network installation CD image for direct installation from a remote FTP or HTTP server is also available in the same directory as the DVD image.

Yeah but now you can get it legally.
#2.2 CrazyDelta on 28 Jun 2005 - 14:36
Actually this has been discussed before, with many even writing to Novell on this BT downloading. In fact it is legally OK to download SUSE 9.3 from the day it was released.

So for all these months, there was nothing illegal about the BT sources.
#2.3 Hurmoth on 28 Jun 2005 - 14:48
SUSE LINUX is free... why they don't have a better way of us getting the ISO I'll never know
#2.4 Skyfrog on 28 Jun 2005 - 15:10
Sorry, I thought they had some kind of deal where only paid members could download it for the first few months after release. Maybe I'm thinking of some other company.
#2.5 Hurmoth on 28 Jun 2005 - 15:28
^ I honestly don't know... you might be right. Novell is one odd ball company
#2.6 M2Ys4U on 29 Jun 2005 - 17:38
Maybe you're thinking of Madriva (sp?) (AKA Mandrake)
#3 randomnut on 28 Jun 2005 - 12:09
Is it just me but when i download, it says 2097MB? Is this right?
#4 souldreamer on 28 Jun 2005 - 12:40
I can't find the ISO anywere.
(1 reply) #5 randomnut on 28 Jun 2005 - 13:13
ftp://ftp.caliu.info/pub/distribucions/suse/suse/i386/9.3/iso/

Can someone please confirm that 2097mb is right?
#5.1 Hurmoth on 28 Jun 2005 - 14:52
That sounds like the DVD version
#6 Skyfrog on 28 Jun 2005 - 13:44
All I can find are network installations. I found this however:

Additional note:
The complete SUSE Linux 9.3 FTP distribution is being worked on and will
be made available in this directory.

So it doesn't actually appear to be available yet.

SL-9.3-LiveDVD-i386-1.iso

Does that look like the right image for the DVD version? If so, what does the "live" part of that indicate??

**edit** NM I guess the live version means it runs off the DVD. Anyone know where i can just get the straight out instll of the DVD version?

Thanks
Charlie
#9.1 mr_skrilla on 28 Jun 2005 - 18:18
That's the version you run from the DVD instead of installing on your hard disk. I don't know if you can use that version to also install on your HD but I don't think so.
#9.2 r6xual on 28 Jun 2005 - 18:19
Didnt happen to run across the direct install iso eh?
#9.3 r6xual on 28 Jun 2005 - 19:10
For some reason the eval-DVD iso's are only 184 megs? Obviously that isnt correct. Anyone have any ideas?
#9.4 Skyfrog on 29 Jun 2005 - 00:51
Those may be network installers, meaning they download the rest from the internet as you install it. The full DVD ISO images aren't available yet (at least I haven't been able to find them).
(4 replies) #10 Lasker on 28 Jun 2005 - 19:10
I have suse 9.3 downloaded from Abril
#10.1 r6xual on 28 Jun 2005 - 19:12
Do you mean youve had it since "April". Where did you get it at? Is it the DVD version?
#10.2 Hurmoth on 28 Jun 2005 - 19:57
I like the new month Abril
#10.3 GAM on 29 Jun 2005 - 01:48
It was released on April 15 according to DistroWatch.com (do not confuse it with BayWatch, the "attributes" and "features" are quite different).
#10.4 souldreamer on 30 Jun 2005 - 12:28
Abril is April in portuguese.
#11 GAM on 28 Jun 2005 - 19:55
The ISO images have been available for some time, they just limited who could get it. My employer is a Novell partner, so I got it some time ago.

It looks like Novell deliberately delay distributing the ISO images to mirrors in order to try to get more people/companies to buy it --that is just my impression though, (feel free to have your own).

<FLAMEBAIT>
It is a darned fine distribution, Microsoft should be shaking in their pants and Red Hat is about to be delisted from the stock exchange....

ftp://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/mirror/SuSE/suse/i386/9.3/iso/

I downloaded the CD ISOs of this version (very few other mirror have CD ISOs btw) but I keep having problems with the installation CD1. It keeps saying that it has errors finding any packages what so ever and refuses to install. Its a very fast mirror and I have downloaded CD ISO 1 3 times today and each time, I get the same problem when I install. Does anyone else have this problem and is it the same with the DVD ISO?

Also does anyone know of any good free downloader programs for MS Windows that would download the DVD ISO, Fresh Download, the one I use is not working :-(
#12.1 Skyfrog on 28 Jun 2005 - 23:13
I recommend you use an ftp client, being as you're downloading from an ftp site. I prefer Filezilla myself; you can download it here.

#12.2 .:Neo.X.WinFreak:. on 29 Jun 2005 - 16:59
uhoh... i just found out you can also download the cd iso's but now u say it won't work...

You can find CDs ISO on various mirrors, but that was the one with the best speed I found. Unfortunatly, something was up with my installation. I dunno if my memory in my PC was messed up or not, but I get problems getting Mandrake 10.1 to even install on this thing :-(

Has anyone else downloaded the CDs and can they tell me if they got it to work?
#13 IndoShindo on 29 Jun 2005 - 08:32
I remember you could order the DVD packages for SUSE before for free from Novel, I did that for SUSE 9.1 PRO, hopefully they got this option .. really don't want to download and then burn the dvd .. damn laziness

Is SUSE suitable for a PIII 800? or is it a bit heavy?
#14.1 .:Neo.X.WinFreak:. on 29 Jun 2005 - 16:56
should work

#14.2 Hurmoth on 29 Jun 2005 - 16:58
I have it working just fine on a P2 @ 400MHz. Some apps load slowly, but it works for what I need it to do just fine though.
#14.3 markjensen on 29 Jun 2005 - 19:13
Depends on your RAM. The more, the merrier.
#15 randomnut on 29 Jun 2005 - 21:51
Has anyone tried downloading the dvd iso yet?

If so do you get the correct 4gb size showing, for me it says witer 2gig or 100something mb?

FYI

There are two ways to obtain a free copy of SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3. One is by downloading the full DVD, and two is by downloading a boot disk and installing over the network. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, and Joe Harmon helps you sort it all out.

the DVD edition contains the complete 64-bit version of SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3 as well as a streamlined 32bit version of the software.

the CD edition contains a complete 32-bit version of SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3. It including approximately 450 additional packages not available on the 32-bit version included on the downloadable DVD image.

It says it's mostly just language files and stuff though, probably nothing anyone needs.

Is it possible to combine the 5 cd's into one dvd?
So I don't need to change cd's during installation?

the only problem i've had with the live dvd iso is that i can only access the main page of neowin, all the other attempts to get into the forums and all that end up in errors. plus the main page doesn't render correctly. overall, it's a great release though!
#21.1 mr_demilord on 01 Jul 2005 - 08:56
wich browser do you use then? Suse has 4 or 5 browsers

Explain to me this: My Dell Inspiron 8100 installs and boots from the DVD or the 5 cds, however my Acer Travelmate 200T (Should be fine) won't make it past 3min of install? Not that it's a big deal and thanks for the link to the DVD.
#22.1 Hurmoth on 30 Jun 2005 - 22:34
What exactly is it doing?
#22.2 mr_demilord on 01 Jul 2005 - 08:54
Looks like the iso's or the cd's are corrupt, or maybe bad ram or harddrive, download memtest to check your ram and download a diagnostic tool from the harddrive manufactur for your harddrive,
