In response to direct customer need for a streamlined method of identifying common security misconfigurations, Microsoft has developed the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA). Version 2.0 of MBSA includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Windows systems. MBSA runs on Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, and Windows XP systems and will scan for common security misconfigurations in the following products: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0, and 6.0, SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 and later, and Office 2000, 2002 and 2003. MBSA also scans for missing security updates, update rollups and service packs published to Microsoft Update.

It's not clear whether Famitsu is simply basing an assumption on the inclusion of the drive on Kutaragi's previous comments, or if the magazine actually has new information about Sony's thinking on the matter.

If PS3 doesn't ship with a hard drive, it will give an edge to the Xbox 360, particularly in terms of massively multiplayer games - an increasingly popular genre which currently requires significant amounts of storage on the client side. Sony may be hoping, however, that the PS3's superior capabilities for removable storage, which includes slots for Memory Stick and other types of high-capacity memory cards, will allow MMOGs to be played on the console even without a drive.

It's also possible that Sony may adopt the approach which many commentators expected Microsoft to follow with the Xbox 360, by launching two versions of the PS3 - one without a hard drive and with limited media capabilities, and a more expensive model with a hard drive and full media functionality.

Ah, here's a cookie?

Sometimes news submissions take a bit before it gets posted. This very well may have been submitted a week ago.

But kudos to you, the ultimate badass. I wish I had this a week ago so I could post such a cool comment too.

I used the old version awhile ago. I tried the new one but can't recall how to tell it my domain"/"computer name. In Windows XP Home my bits are named "frodolives" but apparently that doesn't work. Anyone got a clue to ..."/""error" it gives me in the entry box? Thanks in advance, everything else works, downloads security update, etc. I am having tribble trouble with update 6, and thought to go around it.

Well, for a start, you aint gonna be on a domain with XP HOME.

hmm ... how do u scan other computers with this. do i need to install it on the other machines on the network?
#5.1 BudMan on 04 Jul 2005 - 19:18
Dude have you even launched the product?? What exactly do you not understand under "Pick a computer to Scan"

Specify the computer you want to scan. You can enter either the computer name or its IP address.
#5.2 georgejmyersjr on 04 Jul 2005 - 21:05
That's the problem. Maybe it's me, but "FRODOLIVES" as the computer name doesn't work. Given it, it returns an error: "4.237.247.122 : Computer not found." I am not sure why.

for me i get the option to scan [domain name][computer name] (this computer) as the default option. if you're trying to scan another computer on a windows xp home network you may have issues, at the very least, with name resolution.
#5.4 BudMan on 05 Jul 2005 - 13:45
Yup - name resolution might be your issue.. That error you give, looks a lot like an IP address to me.. Owned by Level 3 Communications, which resolves to;

dialup-4.237.247.122.Dial1.NewYork1.Level3.net

Does frodolives happen to have a public IP address? Did you try using the IP address of the machine your trying to scan?

Does the account your using scan this other machine - have permissions to it?

Thanks for the heads up.

Although I am getting this error when I run a scan: The catalog file is damaged or an invalid catalog.

I only get the error when I select "Check for Security Updates"
