Great to hear this!!
(2 replies) #2 sstoops86 on 12 Jul 2005 - 21:55
is this what was the deer park thing that i heard about long time ago?
#2.1 elliot on 12 Jul 2005 - 21:57
No this is just a secuity update. If you have deer park then don't install this, it'll probably break your profile.
#2.2 Eclipse™ on 12 Jul 2005 - 21:59
Deer Park is the code name for Firefox 1.1. It has nothing to do with these aviary 1.0.x builds.

Quite a few of my extensions was disabled!
I reinstalled from scratch, installed all my Ext again & all is working fine now.

I use Firefox now as my main browser. However what you just described is the major gripe I have always had with Firefox. EVERY update breaks just about everything. There is no excuse for that either.

It will also be what stops Firefox from becoming a more popular browser.
#3.2 DigeratiPrime on 12 Jul 2005 - 23:44
I just updated from 1.0.4 and had no problems with my existing settings and extensions:
Adblock Plus 0.5.8
BBCode 0.4.1.1
CuteMenus 0.4
Findbar Switcher 0.1
Menu Editor 1.2
Show Failed URL 0.1.4
Slim Extension List 0.1
Tab Mix Plus 0.2.3.1
#3.3 ev0| on 12 Jul 2005 - 23:51
Ditto. Only major versions break stuff, and you can fix it yourself with a little skill.
#3.4 toadeater on 13 Jul 2005 - 00:06
This is no excuse, the problem should be fixed, because it has no reason to exist. It was a half-baked idea to use such a system and it could be implemented in a much better way.

If no one wants to take the time to revamp the extensions system, then a simple dialog asking if you would like to run the extension despite the version warning would do it.
#3.5 smileham on 13 Jul 2005 - 08:23
The upgrade/install process is one feature being addressed by Deerpark.
#3.6 Smigit on 13 Jul 2005 - 08:33
Whats there to have no excuse for? You use non supported code that interveins and changes the functionality of a program and you expect major updates to not cause issues? I'm sorry but the way extensions work currently dictates that since the extension is integrating itself with a browser, if they update the browser your extension may break. These extensions arent the same as plugins and were never said to be.

IMHO people have no excuse for their complaints since it's been made clear since day 1 that updating may break extensions. Saying that most security releases break very little. If they implement a new different way of doing this all the better, but I'd love to see people here try and do this themselves. It's not like this is the only program that does this anyway, if anyone uses things such as phpBB forum software you will have experienced the same with mods.

Great deal... another 4.7MB download for a revisionary update
#4.1 Jugalator on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:04
Uhh, what connection are you on exactly?

I can't see even a 56k user having too much trouble with that download.

What is it? A 2-3 minutes download in the background for that...?

For releases made less than once a month.
#4.2 rob.derosa on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:09
must admit it is pretty heavy (comparing with the full install version) for just a few fixes. that was his point.
#4.3 rm20010 on 12 Jul 2005 - 23:46
Actually on a 56K modem 1 MB takes about 4 - 5 minutes to download. So this update will take them anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes to finish.
#4.4 ev0| on 13 Jul 2005 - 00:03
yeah and don't bother websurfing during that time. but hey, 56k users bring it upon themselves.
#4.5 Jexxster on 13 Jul 2005 - 01:56
I agree. I find the need to do a full download and install for these minor, incremental updates to be sloppy code.
#4.6 Destian on 13 Jul 2005 - 02:03
A new update system is currently being worked on which will allow users to automatically download and install small patches to update instead of downloading the entire program.

Don't forget that we are talking about version one of a program. It will continue to improve.

Because every 56K user has the choice..

That is so rude. I was stuck at a place for 4 years w/o any broadband possibilities and it sucked royally, but there wasn't much I could do about it apart from quiting my job and leaving the location entirely.

I'm on broadband now, but let me clue you in on a fact: most Internet users are STILL on 56k!

That being said, 4.7MB is nothing for a 56k user... maybe a 14.4 or even 28.8, but 56k you're looking at 15 mins top. Windows Update is much more of a burden then Firefox. But I agree that they need to work on some sort of "patching" mechanism instead of a full download of the browser.

Sorry, my bad, I must've been really stupid when calculating that.

I even owned a 56k modem about 5-6 years back and should've known it would've taken at least ~15 minutes to finish. But still, I think it's quite little because these updates aren't too common.
#4.10 SIG on 14 Jul 2005 - 20:03
they could release security updates in form of an extension for example.
#5 STanger on 12 Jul 2005 - 21:59
sstoops86..

Deer Park is the code name of the alpha builds that are leading up to Firefox 1.1
which just reached alpha2
#6 rah2 on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:03
Thanks for the news...downloading now!
#7 stezo2k on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:06
cheers for the news
(1 reply) #8 netizen on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:07
Ahh yes, could do with some stability improvements! FF has been exiting for no obvious reason lately, just clicking on a link will kill the browser without a crash report. Happens very infrequently but annoying all the same.
#8.1 nic on 14 Jul 2005 - 04:14
I was noticing the same problems updating from 1.0.1->1.0.2->1.0.3 and then onto 1.0.4 on my laptop. It was really annoying, and I was cursing the Firefox developers under my breath every time the program died. Recently, I formatted/reinstalled everything on my laptop, and with a clean install of 1.0.4 I can say I haven't had any crashes lately.

Probably still have problems with stability and upgrading to new versions like in the beta days of Firefox. Try wiping it from your system, and moving all your firefox profile information over to another folder and doing a clean install and see if you still have any problems. I don't think you should should have to do that...but if you wanna still use the browser it may be a good idea.
(2 replies) #9 DJLunacy on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:16
whats the average amount of RAM that firefox takes up for 3 tabs just curious on mine it's 95MB
#9.1 Solarix on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:34
check it, minimize firefox with those three tabs open and then look at the mem usage, its strange..
#9.2 Andareed on 13 Jul 2005 - 02:48
It just pages out memory when you minimize. When you restore, it pages it back in.

#10.1 Adequate on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:29
Same goes with bold fonts.
#10.2 C64afx on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:32

Bold Fonts are not all they are cracked up to be
#10.3 Kushan on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:50
Underlined fonts are better than bold fonts

Well someone has to start a fanboy war, it IS a post about Firefox....
#10.4 ev0| on 12 Jul 2005 - 23:54
No, no no. you're all wrong. it's all about the italics, baby.
#10.5 Howard on 13 Jul 2005 - 00:14

#12 RaiderOnline on 12 Jul 2005 - 22:53
thx for news
#13 David R. on 12 Jul 2005 - 23:07

Should I uninstall 1.04 before installing this, or just install this over 1.04? which option is better???
#15.1 sin™ on 13 Jul 2005 - 22:36
I always uninstall the previous instalation. Everything is still there and working everytime i install updated version.
(1 reply) #16 NyaR on 13 Jul 2005 - 00:03

You are aware of the security bugs in 1.0?
#17 ev0| on 13 Jul 2005 - 00:04
Simply downgrade windows to 98SE. That'll do it.
#18 obake on 13 Jul 2005 - 00:39
I installed it over 1.0.4, and it broke it. The Bookmark Toolbar doesn't display correctly. It's weird as all hell. Works just fine in Safe Mode, though.

EDIT: Fixed it. Just updated all my extensions. Hehe.
#19 mikemyres on 13 Jul 2005 - 02:21
My extensions are fine, ieview, adblock. I see no need in 99% of all the other extensions, weather one? pfft look out the window!
#20 Huy on 13 Jul 2005 - 02:33
Excellent! Two updates in one morning for me: Mac OS X 10.4.2. and Firefox! Gotta get both PC and Mac versions of Firefox.
#21 greg098 on 13 Jul 2005 - 02:36
My extenstions all work fine. It even fixed a problem I had before where it would crash and keep running in processes. Doesnt do this anymore Also, the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS bug (where it creates 2 entries) has been fixed too.
#22 CrisCr0ss on 13 Jul 2005 - 04:18
the add remove was fixed last version and wow this new faster startup is great also page rendering is alot faster it keeps getting better cant wait for 1.1 to become final... PS all my extensions some odd 20+ all work fine
#23 devyant on 13 Jul 2005 - 05:55
Upgraded an everything works fine too. CompactMenu, Sage, SwitchProxy.
(1 reply) #24 Fubar on 13 Jul 2005 - 05:55

lol, that's kind of funny because they didn't optimize anything since 1.0.4...
To be entirely clear: nothing at all regarding speed changed; this is a security and stability fix release.

Placebo?

I'd agree with you though about 1.1, since it has a ton of improvements to the rendering engine.

Thanks! Updated fine from 1.04. All my extensions still working nicely.
#29 Joshua-San on 13 Jul 2005 - 08:31
Meh, I'm using Deer Park Alpha 2 now, but this stinks I mean, I get all sorts of errors. Oh well it's an alpha, I could have expected that
I think I'll reinstall Firefox. I like non-errornated software

Their "customers"?

it doesnt find an update when i check from firefox itself.

is that because i'm in the uk?
#31.1 evileye on 13 Jul 2005 - 09:17
same for me... i don't think it has to do anything with your location.
#31.2 Caleb on 13 Jul 2005 - 10:55
If you're using a localized version then the update will only be available once the localization is done!
#31.3 WindowsNT on 13 Jul 2005 - 11:34
It's more than likely because your using the EN-GB version like i am.
I expect this to be out in a few days going on the EN-GB 1.04 release time.
#31.4 ZappBrannigan on 15 Jul 2005 - 13:00
Yea, i'm using the british version, and thats still at 1.04
#32 thefonz on 13 Jul 2005 - 09:23
at least its not me then.

i hate this behaviour. uninstalled 1.0.4, installed 1.0.5, after that it said, that all my extensions will be disabled. i started firefox and, yes, none of them worked, but none were disabled. so i had to manually disable them(i've got more than a few), restart firefox, enable, restart browser again and only then everything started to work fine. this happened with upgrading from 0.2 to 0.3 and from 0.3 to 0.4 for me. this is not funny
#33.1 Apollo on 13 Jul 2005 - 11:54
it looks like the world is going to end. be afraid, be very afraid...
#33.2 bush on 13 Jul 2005 - 12:54

#37.1 LTD on 13 Jul 2005 - 14:15
The auto-update feature works like ass.

Simply download the new version of Firefox, and install it. No need to uninstall the previous version.
#37.2 inVision on 13 Jul 2005 - 14:27
Just manually updated... evrything works fine, even my extensions...
#38 Kreuger on 13 Jul 2005 - 14:46
I'll wait till it's in the apt repos to upgrade
(4 replies) #39 Gulfisland on 13 Jul 2005 - 16:01
well... I installed this over my other 1.04, and the first thing it did when it started was crash...

then my extensions and all my settings were f'ed up.. and it takes me a long time to find my extensions ( deviantart etc )

So I am just going to stick with Opera... I havent had it crash yet on me.. FF does almost 5 times a day ( yes it DOES ) you know it if you use FF... wadda ya expect, its still a baby
#39.1 PetrucciSatriani on 13 Jul 2005 - 17:43
You might want to try uninstalling the previous version of FF before you install a new version, just like they tell you.

#39.4 Tempest on 19 Jul 2005 - 03:39
How was that trolling? Your comment is trolling and I certainly don't need you telling me that my comment was:

spam, advertising, useless and off topic comments, raising post count, warez (links) & cracks and aiding this; requests or posts that discuss circumvention of protection mechanisms, racism, threatening (citing), victimization or hateful posts that incite flaming or similar, & bypassing our word filter.[I]

If you thought I was flaming, you are wrong. This is a Firefox thread, not a promo for Opera. That being said, I'll edit the post just for you.
#40 Ravensworth on 13 Jul 2005 - 17:34
Worked fine here, but I highly recommend you go through and update all of your extensions before upgrading Firefox.
#41 jhaygood86 on 13 Jul 2005 - 18:03
Firefox disables extensions when the version is changed, and checks for compatibility, and either updates them or disables them or enables them.
#42 eilegz on 14 Jul 2005 - 01:54
well waiting for optimized version
