Font Installer 1.0 is a quick and easy way for users to install fonts. Version 1.0 only supports True Type fonts. The benifit of this program against installing fonts through the Windows Fonts Folder is that if there is a duplicate, this program will not ask the user what to do every time. When installing a long list of fonts, some of which are already installer, it can be a pain having to click the OK button everytime you try to install a duplicate font.

actually I'm quite happy with just placing new fonts in the font folder, but this Font Installer is a good idea and it's just as easy, I'm gonna have to give it a trial

could do with this.

EDIT: It froze, I'm back to my own technique of copying.

"The" best way to install fonts is to open up your Fonts folder like so:

C:/WINDOWS/Fonts/
(change / to backslash)

Then:

File/Install New Fonts...

That way, Windows already recognizes the font as soon as it's copied. As far as I know, copying the font file manually doesn't allow applications that scan the font folder to detect it as soon as possible, thus making you have to restart/change user just to get that program to detect that the font is in the list.

I'm pretty sure that's changed since Win XP, because I copy and paste and it installs immediately.

Yes, it's changed in at least XP.

Earlier, in Windows 9x, a copy & paste or drag & drop directly to the folder didn't start the install process so they weren't always installed properly like that. If you drag & drop to the C:WindowsFonts folder in XP, the identical procedure is done as when using that menu item, as you can also see with the "Installing fonts..." dialog box popping up, that it didn't do before.

Yes but in Windows XP you can still go File > Install New Font. Problem solved.

The news item lists avoiding a dialog box when installing duplicate fonts as the main advantage with using this, but I can honestly not say that I've ever tried to install masses of duplicate fonts. Actually I can't even remember having tried to install one duplicate.
#9.3 sachleen on 14 Aug 2005 - 21:02
Well, say you had a few hundred fonts, and a bunch of them were doubles... say you had doubles because you wanted to backup all of your fonts, but did not know which were installed with windows already so you just copied them all to a cd or whatever. so now you reinstall windows, and goto the fonst folder, and tell it wherer your fonts are.... its installing them........ and it comes across the 50 or 100 fonts that are doubles, omg, you have to click OK 100 times... you cant leave your computer because youhave to click OK every 2 seconds... yeah, thats why i made it.
#9.4 Solarix on 14 Aug 2005 - 23:39
its called holding down the yes or no key , i.e Y or N or space to cancel . but thats cool

forgot to say, version2 coming up soon... in this ver, it is in VB.NET and you can choose which fonts you want to intsall from a list. the program gets all of the fonts in the same dir into a list, you use arrows >>, >, <, << to select which you want installed.
#11 soldier1st on 14 Aug 2005 - 22:27
this is best used for newbies, for the rest of us the simplist way is to goto control panel and drag and drop all the fonts we want installed to the fonts folder and viola, see now that is what i call easy.hehe
#12 jivemastert on 15 Aug 2005 - 00:06
does anyone know if this lets you keep your fonts in another folder? sometimes a font gets corrupt and adobe products freeze when loading them, so you gotta uninstall all of your fonts, but its usually easier when the fonts arent in the main fonts folder.
#13 sachleen on 15 Aug 2005 - 04:35
in version 2 you willbe able to select individual fonts from other folders, and add entire folders into the list.
#14 soldier1st on 15 Aug 2005 - 04:56
i know with font frenzy you can save your fonts in to a backup folder and it is free and free to register.go here for font frenzy
http://www.fontfrenzy.org/
it moves all fonts except those that came with xp to a backup folder that you choose the name of.a much better app than this junk.

Version2 is almost done! you can select fonts from any folder on your computer. there is also a progress bar and a list that tells you what font is being installed and any errors that occure. you can also select if you want the fonts to be overwriten and backup your installed fonts.

wherer is the damn program, the link above is dead. I do have a use for this program, I'm a graphic artist who has to ensure that the thousands of font files that are at work are on my work machine. that is a whole lot of duplicate files right there.
