In what can be considered to be a minor upgrade, Apple Computers has updated their media jukebox application and the software, which enables the user to purchase songs from their online iTunes digital music store to version number 5.0.1. Users can update by asking the application to check for updates, which takes the user to the relevant page to download the latest updated version of the software.

It should soon be directly available for download on the Apple’s iTunes website. Apple has not revealed what it changed in this update except for the fact that some major stability issues were fixed. The latest edition in version 5 added support for ability to sort play lists into folders, new parental controls and more. And the interface was enhanced to be more user friendly with brand new search features. The software is free and available for Windows and Macintosh platform.

Download: Apple iTunes 5.0.1

Neowin wants to know what you think about the iTunes service, will a price increase change your downloading habits? Will it make you consider using other legal services? Would you like to use other services but are unable to?

Did they get rid of that stupid Bonjour service they added in 5.0?

Bonjour is the replacement for the old Rendezvous service.

That doesn't make it useful.

Yes it has disappeared from my services list, the programs folder, and nothing asks for DNS whatevers when you install itunes.

I don't recall having a Rendezvous service before, weird.

Oh well I got rud of iTunes b/c it renamed some of my mp3's to
No Artist - No Title, when there was labels

Bonjour/Rendevous is what allows you to share your iTunes library between several different machines (streaming). I believe it also is what allows iTunes to find speakers connected via an Airport Express. If you don't share your library and don't have an Airport Express, you can safely disable the service.

I hope this fixes the "Registry settings used for CD burning cannot be found" error. That one was really getting on my nerves.

That's exactly what I was hoping when I saw that there was an update available. iTunes suddenly stopped seeing my CD drive with version 5 and that was really annoying. Installing now, I'll report back if it sees my drive now or not.

I've been getting an error message since updating I did a bit of looking around and it's a common problem, but none of the solutions i've read has managed to fix it. I even went back to an older version, but that's not working either now... "The software required for communicating with the ipod is not installed correctly. please reinstall itunes to install the ipod's software"

I don't think its possible with Mac's... programs are basically like a zip, so replacing parts of it don't work, so its just easier to redistribute the entire thing (well, I think, but I'm a noob when it comes to apple)

I have a Shuffle and it is working fine with this version of iTunes, as is everything else I had before I upgraded to this latest version.

For some reason, the iTunes toolbar that sits in my taskbar doesn't work. When I click the button to restore iTunes, it won't restore. It crashes Explorer as well. Back to WMP I go, lol

iTunes toolbar? Or just the tray icon? I'm not aware of an iTunes toolbar but that would be kind of nice to have. I assume you just mean the tray icon though?

Here's a question for anyone who might know. I used to use my MS Bluetooth keyboard that had media keys on it and iTunes had no problem responding to the generic commands sent by the media keys assuming it was open or minimized, however when it was minimized to the task bar it wouldn't catch these commands. I've been using x64 recently so my bluetooth keyboard set obviously doesn't work. Does anyone know if version 5 had a fix for this? It'd be nice to be able to minimize it to tray and still be able to use my media keys. Then again, it doesn't matter until MS updates their keyboard/mouse software to run on x64

Another nice thing would be if iTunes didn't kill DWM anymore with this update, though I don't expect they will do anything to fix that for a while
