Thanks rantapallo for the heads up on this official release from Mozilla.

Mozilla has just released Firefox 1.0.7 browser. This release contains mainly security and stability fixes.

Changes:
  • Fix for a potential buffer overflow vulnerability when loading a hostname with all soft-hyphens
  • Fix to prevent URLs passed from external programs from being parsed by the shell (Linux only)
  • Fix to prevent a crash when loading a Proxy Auto-Config (PAC) script that uses an "eval" statement
  • Fix to restore InstallTrigger.getVersion() for Extension authors
  • Other changes

Neowin wants to know what you think about the iTunes service, will a price increase change your downloading habits? Will it make you consider using other legal services? Would you like to use other services but are unable to?

These fixed vulnerabilities also affect 1.5b1?
#4.1 kl33per on 21 Sep 2005 - 12:10
Yes. There is also a seperate, but similar issue that only affects 1.5 Beta 1 (and probably other builds from this branch). However this second vulnerability can only cause Firefox to crash and can't execute code, unlike the above fixed vulnerability.

Waiting still for the GB version of 1.07. As always, a long delay!

Why? Is the en_US version not good enough?
#5.2 WindowsNT on 21 Sep 2005 - 13:30
Some of us who live in the UK want to use Mozilla's UK Version.
Where spelling is correct and the default search plugins search the UK sites like Google.co.uk

Because the U.S is not the U.k and we spell things properly

Don't forget that the English always use proper grammar, such as ending their sentences with periods! (oh, and it's U.S. / U.K. not U.S / U.k)

Besides adding an extra u to any word ending in 'or', what exactly is it that you spell correctly?
#5.5 Fubar on 21 Sep 2005 - 14:03
ok forgive me for my bad grammer no one is perfect and im sure your arguing just for the sake of it. an example or two about the differant spelling color (american spelling) Colour (english spelling) Centre (american spelling) Center (english spelling).

Anything else you want to try and argue about the fact that they release uk version and us version for no apprent reason ? because im sure that's what you are trying to get at :/
#5.6 xMorpheousx416 on 21 Sep 2005 - 14:14
Oh, I am not trying to argue anything. Here's how the first user's post was jumped.

They asked a simple question, and instead of "properly" answering the question by a simple reply of:

The U.K. version uses different search engine criteria and English spelling.

Instead, insults were used. If you're so proper, you figure it out.
#5.7 Fubar on 21 Sep 2005 - 14:16
I dont see any insults any where on this reply section you've totaly lost me there mate

oh and regarding how the first post wasnt answered correctly you may have not read this

Actually color was the correct spelling over there up until around the 18th century or so, it comes from the latin word coloris. We spell it color because that's the way you spelled it originally also. Then you guys started getting fancy borrowing from French words like couleur and adding u's all over the place. We didn't change the spelling of color, you guys did.

Lighten up, folks! I only was bemoaning the fact that Mozilla can't seem to release all new language versions at the same time.

It's not, I don't think, as if the flaws they're fixing have anything to do with the regional aspects of Firefox...!

So what, i still prefer Firefox to IE or other browser, and i'm not a fan boy or wharever you call anyone who likes Firefox..

It's easy to use, i still think it's the most secure browser and it's community it's one of the most stronger from the web..

It's opensource and that my friends is pure clean game..

So stop this nonsense that it's starting to get insecure..
Hell they fixed every one of those critical bug's, and i prefer downloading Firefox 1.0.7 to download 10 - 20 IE updates...
#11.1 DigeratiPrime on 21 Sep 2005 - 14:31
If you havent noticed its become popular to play along with the lame comments to try and belittle firefox although its the safest and most powerful broswer ever. Just ignore the infidels!
#11.2 Digitalfox on 21 Sep 2005 - 15:07
Well, the problem is that neowin is starting to get almost only lame comments..
I am a member of this forum almost from the beggining ( 2001 ) and now i'm starting to get bored of so much nonsense pelople write..
#11.3 Fubar on 21 Sep 2005 - 15:11
i know how you feel , its been my homepage since i joined in 2001 also , now im starting wonder if i should replace it with something else ahh well heres to the next 4 years
#11.4 tmaxxtigger on 21 Sep 2005 - 15:31
And I thought it was only me. The old crowd was far kinder and more helpful.
#11.5 TRC on 21 Sep 2005 - 16:02
I think as Neowin became increasingly popular more and more kids started finding it and joining up. So the comments become more immature as time goes on. Back then it was more of a serious tech site instead of the fluff it has become today.

I'm wondering why they still update the 1.0.x series... Shouldn't they focus on 1.5+ only?
#14.1 Manksgloob on 21 Sep 2005 - 21:41
They pretty much are, however they thought that the vulnerabilities in 1.0.6 were "drastic" enough that they felt an intermittent release would important.

It's like a "We're working on our new product -- oh crap, there's a really big problem in the current product..." *looks at new product* "But this one isn't ready yet -- I guess we should patch the current problem for now then," sort of thing.
#14.2 Eclipse™ on 21 Sep 2005 - 22:13
Security bugs like the ones that this release fixes are usually patched on the trunk (the bleeding-edge development repository) to make sure that the patch doesn't cause problems with pre-existing code, and then fixed simultaneously on the branches (snapshots of the trunk (or, theoretically, another branch) that lead to release-quality code) like 1.0.x and 1.5. So, they technically are focusing equally on both the 1.0.x and 1.5 development branches in regard to security fixes.
