Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows 2000, XP, or Server 2003. It started development at Washington State University as an undergraduate senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. It is meant to be a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with all Windows operating systems.

looks pretty cool. Nice to see some actual color selection and layers. If anything needs updating it is MS Paint. I don't think much has really changed in Paint since Windows 3.1. If it is free, what's with the expiration date?

The expiration date is just for the beta.

1. This has nothing to do with Microsoft. The authors only used the name "Paint" to make it sound less shameful and more light-weight.
2. By the feature set and target audience, this is not comparable with Paint and is more comparable with Microsoft Acrylic.

Actually it does have somethgin to do with microsoft.

as MS is funding and helping these gusy make Pain.NET as a possible paint replacement, and another .net showoff application.

Is it still bloated? I remember I tested some version, and it was too slow.. Is it still slow, or have they fixed that?

I love this program. I have it installed alongside PhotoShop because Paint.NET is much faster and I use it when I need to do a quick editing job or make a screenshot. This is much faster than waiting for PhotoShop to open just to make a screenshot.
