Mozilla Firefox 1.5 Beta 2 is now available for download. Also known as the 1.8 Beta 5 milestone, this is the last beta release of the next major Firefox update and is aimed at testers, extension/theme authors and Web developers. The final release of Firefox 1.5, which will be widely promoted to end-users, is scheduled for later this year.

This release does not contain any major new features since Beta 1. Improvements to automated update system, Web site rendering and performance, along with several security fixes are included in this release

Beta 1 users that want to help test software update, should wait for the automatic update to be triggered sometime in the next few days. The incremental update from Beta 1 to Beta 2 is 700K bytes.

CHANGELOG:
• Support for DVD Burning has been added. You can now create a new Zip file on a DVD as well as on a CD. Note: CD/DVD writing is only available on systems with the Windows XP operating system.
• The Job Wizard "Select Items" feature has been changed. The left pane now only displays folders, instead of folders and files.
• In the Job Wizard, when you check (or include) a folder in either pane, the contents of that folder are now automatically displayed in the right pane.
• The "Reuse WinZip window" option is now turned off on installation.
• Miscellaneous bug fixes and minor enhancements, including:
• WinZip startup - Certain configurations would cause WinZip to take a long time to boot up. This has been corrected. The delay may still occur when accessing the CD/DVD writing.
• Job Wizard - "Select Items" no longer shows network shortcuts in either pane. To specifiy a network location, you must use Entire Network.
• Check for Updates ? did not work with Norton Internet Security, even after granting connection permissions. This has been addressed.

glad to see this didnt make frontpage news, like all the other times firefox coughs or sneezes

The only reason why IE7 and Opera aren't always on the front page too is because AFAIK they are in closed development while Firefox is Open Source and therefore in open development.

Maybe it's because Firefox isn't commercial software like IE and Opera.
Opera and MS tries to make as much as possible money.

Only if there is a vurnability in Firefox then it's news.

is it worth using yet? or is the functionality still cutting it off at the legs?

I'm using it as my default browser... All-In-One Mouse Gesture wouldn't work but the "Mouse Gestures" extension works fine. Adblock doesn't seem to work properly and ends up blocking all Flash, even with the updated Build 50.

if you update to All-In-One Gestures .17.x and the latest adblock-plus, everything should work normally

I had the same problem... It started after the flash 8 install.

Don't have object tabs set under adblock options. I think the problem is with that feature, turn it off for now and it should work.... or just go back to flash 7

Flash 8 is causing problems on 1.0.x with adblock (plus) too.

The partial update is now live. If your running 1.5beta 1, go to Help->Click 'Check for updates' to update to 1.5b2
After jumping over numerous hurdles (viz. uncovering some unexpected bugs, sorting fixes, turning water into wine) we've now got the Firefox 1.5b1 to Firefox 1.5b2 update live for download! If you're running Firefox 1.5b1 you should see the update notification sometime over the next couple of days. It will be easy to try out because the partial patches from 1.5b1 to 1.5b2 for each platform are around a megabyte in size!

As this is the first release we are issuing an update for using the new system, we anticipate things will be smoother going forward.
I feel like its GUI and the whole system are much faster than Firefox 1.0.7. Didn't encounter any bugs yet.

If you use themes or extensions, most wont work with this version
Quote this comment #15.1 Posted by justlooking on 08 Oct 2005 - 16:33
In about:config you can create a new-string app.extensions.version and make it 1.0+
also there's an extension to force compatibility and the trunk versions have a Nightly Tester Tool that makes everything compatible as well. Lots of possibilities.

Yep.
When using the new update system that is the version number that shows up

Hmmph. Still no autoupdates here for us en-GB folks.

Been really itching to see this feature in action, since becoming aware of it circa Beta 1 (first version of DeerPark I've tried). Dang, sometimes it's just rubbish being British

BTW, is anyone else having trouble with this 3-different-names-per-release business? I mean, 1.5beta2 is 1.4.1 I can dig, but how/why also 1.8beta5? How is 1.8 up to beta 5 if 1.5 is only at beta 2? I know this will be Let's all laugh at teh n00b time(TM), but I hae to know...
