Sick of waiting for Windows Vista? Get it now.

Vista Transformation Pack 4.0 was just released and it does a great job of giving your XP machine the Vista look. In December last year Windows Blinds released a new version of their software that was designed to provide Windows XP with transparent effects, however, it wasn’t free. That is where the Vista Transformation Pack comes into play. It is free and does a great job of giving my machine a look similar to Vista. It doesn’t have the powerful transparency effects for every window (as seen on the window to the right in the screenshot above) but does have enough transparency to make me happy. The greatest thing is that it is free!

It does have uninstallation options in case you decide you want to get rid of it, so there really isn’t anything to lose. However, when you install the software it has to overwrite some system files (it modifies things like the boot screen) so Windows will prompt you stating that your system files have been changed. It will ask whether you want to change them back or leave them, so just leave them if you want the system to function properly.

The software is also nice because it allows you to choose what you want it to change. If you don’t want it to alter the boot screen then you just have to uncheck the “Boot Screen” box during installation (the boot screen is kinda ugly, see the screenshots link below). This is a very nice piece of software.

Is this less dangerous (for MS) than the famous KoL's theme?
#2.1 toadeater on 22 May 2006 - 03:29
Dangerous?
#2.2 tiagosilva29 on 22 May 2006 - 13:01
Yeap, dangerous.
#2.3 TRC on 22 May 2006 - 15:52
How is that dangerous again? All they did was ask the author to remove the theme. They didn't hunt him down and kill him, nor did they even mention people that had already downloaded it since it would be impossible to do anything about that. I believe the original poster was just asking if Microsoft would care about this theme and if they might demand it also be removed.

Ghey...

Just wait for the real thing - not that Vista is just a new Gui.
#3.1 zixyon on 23 May 2006 - 16:22
loll no ****, like theres any neowinian who dosnt know that
#4 kylmcg on 22 May 2006 - 01:44

(4 replies) #5 Z3r0 on 22 May 2006 - 03:33
imho this is really pointless

firstly: this is not the final vista look

secondly: you won't get all the features of vista

thirdly: XGL totally r0x vista
#5.1 advancedboy on 22 May 2006 - 19:35
pwned, esp. the XGL part cubed spinning desktop is for the pro's
#5.2 The Cub on 30 May 2006 - 09:29
Just been reading about that and SUSE 10.1 here.
Might actualy give Linux a try after reading about it.
#5.3 Jugalator on 30 May 2006 - 20:13
"firstly: this is not the final vista look"

With no solid, official confirmation from MS about this, when will people stop trying.

It could very well be extremely similar to the final look. Heck, they're in *release candidates* already.
#5.4 NightmarE D on 04 Jun 2006 - 22:28
Ummm....

It's just a theme package people. It's not meant to actually transform XP in to Vista. So no need to whine about not having all of Vistas features. if you were honestly expecting that to happen then you don't know very much about it.
#6 noroom on 22 May 2006 - 05:27
"as seen on the window to the right in the screenshot above"... Uh huh...

Including a screenshot would've been a good idea. *Goes to source*
#7 ZombieFly on 22 May 2006 - 07:46
wtf is "windows blinds" ?

screenshot?

Windowblinds is a thirdparty skinning program coded by Stardock. It uses it's own skinning files instead of *.msstyles.
#8.1 Pierreken on 22 May 2006 - 09:32
I think he was referring to the spelling of WindowBlinds
#8.2 ZombieFly on 22 May 2006 - 10:34
yes, i am fully aware that windowblinds is a skinning app, i was being an arse and poking fun at the poster's mis-interpretation of the name

The headline is kinda misleading. Vista is far more than just a new visual style. This trend of sensational headlines seems typical of neowin these days.
#9.1 TRC on 22 May 2006 - 15:54
It was VERY misleading for me, because when I saw it I shouted "The public beta is finally out!" and eagerly clicked on the link only to find a stupid theme.

Same thing I thought....Very misleading.
#9.3 Jexxster on 22 May 2006 - 18:18
I agree about the headline being misleading. I was expecting something much more substantial than a simple theme pack.
#9.4 nfin1ty on 25 May 2006 - 04:17
ditto. use proper headlines as to not mislead or otherwise disappoint.

this isn't close to vista and anyone who has tested it can tell you that...

this isn't a bad pack, mind you.. just a bad headline
#9.5 Jugalator on 30 May 2006 - 20:23
Most of you seem to assume the headline was intended to be serious, but I think it was just an attempt at being funny.

Sort of like those funny BSOD jokes. :p You know, how Windows crash a lot!! Haha :p

Have you heard? Microsoft has decided, in light of the current delays in getting it to market, that another rename of the OS would be appropriate.

While Vista (a view as seen from some distance) has adequately described the OS to present, they've decided to rename the Consumer version GODOT.....

Are we suppose to "LOL" or something?
#10.2 Havin_it on 22 May 2006 - 19:14
Well, yes, I feel that would be only polite.

/LOLs

No need really. Maybe just a hollow laugh, but only if you'e feeling Lucky...

Meanwhile, if you're looking for a update your OS to one that may be more stable and pretty, you really ought to be looking at the recent crop of Linux distros. The alternative? Just what were they thinking with the new MacBook?

And I bet you consider yourself beautiful....

Windows XP looks and works great. If you dont know how to configure your PC, then you should even be allowed near one. Go buy a premade one at Wal-Mart with MSN Messenger preinstalled. That way youd see 0 problems and wouldnt be talking BS out your mouth...

"En attendant Godot". ([While] Waiting for Godot)

French book I read a few years ago. Story of a guys waiting for a guy named Godot. Stuff happens while they wait. Punchline is that he never comes. I liked that book, somehow.

And so, I found that funny. It made me smile.

I mean it pays to be vaguely educated sometimes.

This is almost as sad as all those lame OS X-knockoff visualstyles and WB themes for XP.
#13 eilegz on 23 May 2006 - 18:02

"Sick of waiting for Windows Vista?"
Sick of hearing about Windows Vista? - Yes, I am joking, I realise Neowin is all about MS Betas.

I'm sorry to tell you that MS didn't ask KoL peacefully to remove it, but, on the contrary, they threated against him.

And, if "original poster" means me, I was simply underlining, in a sarcastic way, the big big mistake Microsoft made. Don't you agree with that?

What theme was it that they moaned about? I know they've asked for removals before, but threatening over a theme is harsh!
#15.2 NightmarE D on 04 Jun 2006 - 22:37
They said KoL used parts of the actual Vista UI to build his theme. If you've ever used his themes you'd see that he obviously makes all the graphics himself, he always gave them his own personal touch and made it look more clean. KoL 's themes had better quality than the real Vista theme IMHO.

They then went after Jemaho for releasing his Vista theme. I think mainly because KoL helped in making it. Jemaho still releases updates to his though and just recently released Vista 2.0 for Windowblinds I think.

I think the other issue they went after was because KoL called his VistaXP and Jemaho called his Vista. All the other themers who used other names like Arrow for Aero, never heard from MS from what I know of.

I still think that if the names of the themes wouldn't have featured the name Vista, MS wouldn't have said anything. But who knows?

Strangely, the video plays way too fast for me unless I drag the slider to the start again once it has started streaming.

Learn to count lol.

Xgl is an eye candy enhancer for Linux. It's in alpha (I think), but is pretty stable, and has transparency, a spinning cube for virtual desktops, and beautiful (not too niticable, but you know it's tere.) drop shadows.
#19.2 Jugalator on 30 May 2006 - 20:20
Yes, in short, one could say it's in the same area as Vista's Aero, or Apple's Aqua.
#20 RaiderOnline on 27 May 2006 - 17:01
damn.
#21 Neonemesis on 04 Jun 2006 - 21:18
how is this not being targeted by MS, but a little visual style by KoL gets pulled.
