Well, all we need now is for VMware Workstation to go free, then we'll be set!

Why not get Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 instead of Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 SP1?

because (for me at least) Virtual PC is more use (and fun), you can drag and drop, have sound, etc.
(its all handled in one app with minimal background services)
and you don't have to install IIS nor have the server service running in the background - when you want to do something else.

I would say Virtual Server has one use - provides the VMM.sys service and Network driver so you can run Virtual PC on AMD64 systems.

EDIT: Perhaps, you should read this (Virtual PC vs. Virtual Server whitepaper)

I found Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 to be quite buggy and unstable. And noticeable slower as well. It's meant more for Virtual Servers, not Virtual Workstations.

Thanks for the info. I don't use any of themselves, I use VMware and Xen, but was considering it --now I don't.

Ah... they are giving it away now. I was going to say that this was old, because I've had SP1 installed for Virtual PC 2004 for awhile now.

Now they need to make Virtual PC for the Mac for free! Also can't wait for Virtual PC 2007.

VMWare Server is free to download as well. I haven't noticed much difference between that and VMWare Workstation in terms of performance or in operation.

That's exactly what I was thinking... But then I saw that this is the full version of Virtual PC with service pack 1 included. That is free to download.
