The Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 (formerly known as WinFX), is the new managed code programming model for Windows. It combines the power of the .NET Framework 2.0 with new technologies for building applications that have visually compelling user experiences, seamless communication across technology boundaries, and the ability to support a wide range of business processes. These new technologies are Windows Presentation Foundation, Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, and Windows CardSpace (formerly code named "Infocard".

Microsoft plans to ship .NET Framework 3.0 as part of the Windows Vista operating system. In addition, Microsoft is making these technologies available on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The following Community Technology Preview of .NET Framework 3.0 enables you to continue experimenting with early builds of these technologies, get acquainted with the development experience, and provide feedback to Microsoft.

This is BETA software!, please use caution when installing it on your system

When it says "It combines the power of the .NET Framework 2.0 with new technologies", does this mean it will run .net 2.0 apps? Do we have to install yet another .Net package to run some programs?

Haha.. Yup, and everyone disagreed with me when I said it would be like the VB runtimes of the past.. Having to install one for this version.. One for that version.. I bet 1.x, 2.x and 3.x are just the start of a line of .Net frameworks.

What's the problem with having to install an extra version of the .NET framework? It's the same with DirectX, only DirectX setup includes previous versions.

The problem is that you may end up having to install the .NET 1 package, the .NET 2 package AND the .NET 3 package on a single machine, unlike DirectX or Sun Java where you just install the one package and you're done. The current scheme where 2.0 and 3.0 aren't backwards-compatible with 1.0 is also a problem. If Microsod wanted 2.0 and 3.0 to not work with 1.0, they shuld have released it under a new name. They should have called it the Windows LIVE Framework. That's their current marketing catchphrase, after all.
