Ubuntu 6.10 - Edgy Eft - has been released. The desktop version introduces a host of new features, an improved interface and a wide variety of new applications and desktop tools making Ubuntu 6.10 flexible and user-friendly. Enhancements include:
  • Tomboy, an easy-to-use and efficient note-taking tool
  • F-Spot, a photo management tool that enables tagging, photo editing and automatic uploading to on-line web management sites such as Flickr
  • GNOME 2.16, which in addition to new features such as enhanced power management, makes the GNOME desktop more secure, faster and more stable
  • Upstart, a replacement start-up manager offering a cleaner design, eye-catching effects and a substantially faster boot time
  • The latest Firefox web browser, which offers inline spell check support in web forms, easy recovery of crashed sessions, built-in phishing detectors, enhanced search engine management with built in OpenSearch support, and better support for previewing and subscribing to web feeds
  • Proactive security features, preventing many common security vulnerabilities even before they are discovered
  • Evolution 2.8.0, which brings new features such as vertical message panes
"With Ubuntu 6.10, we've made improvements across the board, both on the desktop where they're a visible part of the user experience, and in the underlying infrastructure where they improve performance and reliability for servers and desktops. The result is a system which is easier to use, faster, and more robust than ever. A great release in its own right, it will also be a solid base on which to build the next generation of Ubuntu features," said Matt Zimmerman, Ubuntu CTO.

Awesome distro although I've switched to Zenwalk 3.0. Will be keeping an eye on the Ubuntu forums and other matters related to Edgy.

Must admit, the ease of use of Ubuntu blew me away when I first tried it.

Have used Linux for many years both professionally and personally - and its always been a bit of a mess around getting it to behave how I want it to. But Ubuntu changed that, no doubt at all! Well worth a download!

wine's working pretty hard on DX9 support (it's actually flying atm) although DX9 is big and wine will never be perfect I think it's going to be the clincher as far as games go.

There are quite a few games the will run natively in Linux. All of the Quake games, I believe all of the Unreal series, and there are several more.

I've got 6.10 RC set up the way I like it and it runs great. Much better experience overall than the last time I tried Linux (before RedHat was Fedora and before Mandrake was Mandriva). Plus, Beryl runs smooth as a baby's butt. With Xorg7.1 built in there's no need to mess with xgl or aiglx. I can't say how much I've missed an exposé like feature since my powerbook died a while back. Some may say that things like the desktop cube are just eye candy, but being able to apply the virtual desktops to a physical object, it's made it much easier for me to organize things on different desktops an actually remember where everything is.

Anyway, I digress. Ubuntu 6.10 is nice. That said, is there an easy way to upgrade from RC to Final? Is there any difference between the two?

drop to a terminal and do this:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

And you're done. Unless you've been applying updates regularly of course - the packages were finalised yesterday lunchtime, so if you got that batch then you're running the final version now.

haven't run that since sunday i think. i'll run it again when i get home. i gotta say, being able to update an OS with two lines of script is such a huge bonus.

Yes you can.

EDIT: Ah, I see. You can get Ubuntu 6.06 LTS for free on CD, but not the new 6.10 release. Corrected.

It's to bad the X-Fi isn't supported under Linux. Oh well.
#9.1 mattm591 on 27 Oct 2006 - 08:21
But at least Creative are now working on X-Fi drivers!
#9.2 vetLOC on 27 Oct 2006 - 12:22
For Linux?
#9.3 mattm591 on 27 Oct 2006 - 20:05
Yup. Pegged for release Q2 2007 I believe (although BETA probably)

Creative plans to make proprietary (closed source) drivers available for the X-Fi series of sound cards in the second quarter of 2007. These drivers will have full support for ALSA (playback, recording, mixer, MIDI, synthesis) and OpenAL 1.1 (with EAX effects).

#18 Shiranui on 01 Nov 2006 - 07:20
Tried it, just to see what all the fuss was about, then promptly returned to Fedora.
Best thing about ubuntu was that wallpaper with the 3 asses.....
#19 Draje on 01 Nov 2006 - 22:02
I don't get why ubuntu is made to have the poop brown themes, it just looks horrible IMO.
