Sure, if you are willing to trust security software funded by the russian government

Damn right. Good people too.
And the performance is great,
NOD's transparent until it strikes
the poor, unsuspecting virii. ;p
#3.5 Beastage on 29 Oct 2006 - 11:39
nah you right, nod32 is excellent and so is kaspersky, choose either one and you get a great protection for the pc without suffering performance loses

I found Kaspersky to be a monstrous resource hog, suitable only for a server or any computer not actually used by human beings on a daily basis, hehe.

Because of that, I didn't keep the trial going long enough to see if it actually provided good protection.

Actually 21mb of virtual memory usage is monstrous. Its time you upgraded that 32mb ram you have

Nice, at least my 10 year license I purchased will now work on Vista.

Wow... 10 years? I'm still hesitant to go beyond a single year, as you never know what other AV programs and operating systems will be doing.

I'm using the latest final version and it hasn't had an update of defs. for 2 days which is a bit unusual
#8.1 JJ_ on 29 Oct 2006 - 22:02
Now that doesnt sound good does it. Maybe you should switch to the likes of Kaspersky with hourly updates

Always check for the latest version at: http://www.eset.com/support/updates.php
Mainly during weekends there's no update for a couple of days...
#11 JT1985 on 29 Oct 2006 - 11:27
yer the last update was on the 27th nowt to worry about. But also, if you ever experience problems (which i have on occasion) make sure you either change the server or let it choose automatically.

NOD32 is great!!!! but I like the interface and the features of Bitdefender more so I decided to use that instead =)

I've tried Bit Defender before and thought that the program sucked ass horribly. The program would bring my system to a crawl sometimes. It got to the point where I had to uninstall it because it was using too many resources, and it was ALWAYS scanning everything (you can see the little transparent activity window spike constantly when nothing is even going on). So right now I'm using Kaspersky on my XP install. Since NOD32 supports Vista now, I might get it a try since I've been hearing so many good things about it.
#12.2 excalpius on 29 Oct 2006 - 18:18
Try NOD32...you won't go back.

The interface is odd, but put it in silent updates mode and you'll never know it is there until something wicked this way comes.

Why can I not find the Beta when I check the Beta http://www.eset.com/download/beta.php link at Eset? Am I missing something? Yes I know I can get it from the link on this post but it seems strange Eset does not list it.

Thanks

#14.1 excalpius on 29 Oct 2006 - 18:20
?

Even though I can't decipher your post, just your mention of Avast would indicate you are recommending that. And while Avast is better than AVG (crap) and free, it's not in the same league as NOD32...period.
#15 theyarecomingforyou on 29 Oct 2006 - 22:24
Updated and it's working fine.

I found the whole Kaspersky vs Symantec thing interesting. Kaspersky saying nobody needs access to the kernel hook tables, and Symantec saying you do. This kinda made me question how thorough Kaspersky's setup is, I mean, for years they have been famous for their heuristic file scanning, but I guess I was surprised to find out they don't consider the kernel API tables worth monitoring?
However, I think Symantec sucks because of their resource usage.

That and Symantec does not seem to detect keyloggers I had a download Windows Defender detected it as a keylogger. I then scanned it with Symantec and it found nothing. I figured maybe it was a false detect by Defender so I download ClamWin and scanned with that and it detected something with the file also....

That really makes me trust Symantec, free and open source apps detect stuff that Symantec (a pay app) cannot!!
