A new Opera 9.1 beta (Pre-RC1) has been published by the Opera Desktop team. This new version (build 8643) sports an anti-fraud feature that should stop users from trusting websites that are only after their money, which I originally reported here. On paper it proved to be better performance than Firefox or IE, but does anybody know if it actually lived up to this?

If you wish to read more about this anti-fraud protection than read our previous news report covering this. The new beta fixed many issues, and improvements to the new anti-fraud protection system.

Watch out, the 8643 build has issues properly loading gzipped pages from cache (ie, Neowin). It's an amazing browser, but the Opera team made a minor mistake. The next weekly should be up soon.

I only wish the Mac version was more integrated into the OS like Safari is. For example, you can right-click on a photo and save it to your iPhoto library.

this build works fine if you disable page cachig; it's unusable if you don't

Although I knew about the bug, I've not encountered any problems with it using Neowin.

To 3.1: If you are using Ad Muncher, it is incompatible with GZIP, and doesn't even bother using that at all for browsing, thus not receiving the errors. It will also not happen with certain proxies, if I believe.

Nope I don't. Anyway, thanks to bringing this to my attention.

I wonder what thier plans are regarding opera 10?

Minimal news on it, but it hopes to attack Microsoft's market share. Here is the only real data given so far. So, as it states on Wikipedia, "Opera 10 will be based on crossplatform experience which will allow the user to start reading a web page on the desktop and then continue on a mobile phone or PDA. Opera 10 will also include long anticipated developer tools."

"long anticipated developer tools"... Hmm, an extension API comes to mind.

I hope version 10 is just as good on Mac as it is on Windows.

You mean "then"?

WOW

The person made one very small spelling mistake. We all might want to take cover under our computer desks because the world's about to come to an end

NightmarE D, your melodramatic gross over-reaction is facetious, nasty, immature, and ill-humoured.

Mohsin Naqi pointed out something intended to help, not only the writer, but the reader, (including myself, in whom such an error caused sufficient confusion to make me re-read the sentence a couple of times to be sure of the writer's intended meaning).

It would help the reader, if the writer, (especially if English is their second language), took the time to read their article before posting it to ensure confusing mistakes like this one are weeded out.

As a reader I would like to thank Mohsin Naqi for trying to help, and point out that I, for one, appreciate it when others donate their valuable time to clear up areas of confusion, (no matter whether the mistake was made by me or by someone else), for the benefit of the author and for the rest of us.

Not interested 'til Roboform is supported.
#7.1 +Napalm Frog on 07 Nov 2006 - 17:54
But wouldn't that be their problem, and not Opera's?
#7.2 koenip on 08 Nov 2006 - 13:54
Nope. Opera wants to stay pure by allowing no extensions.
