OpenOffice.org is the open source project through which Sun Microsystems is releasing the technology for the popular StarOffice productivity suite. It is an international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format. It establishes the necessary facilities to make this open source technology available to the developer community.

Although the main downloads section on www.openoffice.org still points at the 2.0.4 release, the 2.1.0 release is actualy available right now. Expect the download pages at www.openoffice.org to be updated within 24 hours or less. Meanwhile, enjoy this FTP link.

The OOo main page has been updated now, so you can just use the main page link if you need the Mac or Linux versions.

Love OO. Dumped Ms office right after i graduated and OO is doing it for me.

Why would you dump MS Office if you already had it? If you didn't have the money (and aren't a warez monkey) for MS Office, I can understand it, but IMO, OO is a step down from MS Office in terms of features. Not that it's a BAD program, but I wouldn't substitute MS Office for it.

He might have been pirating but than quit :-) Or May be university was providing a version of MS Office for him? Or may be he used university computers? Who knows? ;-) In any case I do not think that OO is a step down from Ms Office. I am using OOo, and I am using 10% or less of its functionality and this is enough for my needs :-)

OO is a step down. I'm as big of a supporter of OO as anyone, I run it on Linux (my main OS) and on my USB through the portableapps feature.

However, development in MS Office is superior if you do anything aside from writing a paper; and if you get into things outside of writing a paper, OO is clearly a step down in many ways. Even OO lacks 'advanced' editing functions of MS Office. Office is one of the reasons I still have Windows (as well as media/graphics/program editing software).

Now, it's a wonderful alternative, and it's improving vastly, but in no way is it a full fledged MS Office replacement unless you are using either office suite for creating normal text documents.

Go OO!

I was using a student version. What sickened me was office using too much disk space and pooping around update and backup folders all over the pc. Also i dont like IE opening word files in the browser and i couldnt find a way to turn it off. Also what put me off is the fact that i had to validate every time i downloaded a template or a clipart.

I consider OO a step up for me. I see lots of features that Office2k3 dont have. Word suggestion, print to PDF, better control over tables (Oh thank you Lord) etc And its FREE. I did try the beta/rc of office Live. It had glitches which any beta would. Ribbon is impressive but isnt a justification to buy a new one or upgrade even though i can get it again as a student version. I see justification to upgrate to live if you use outlook etc. But thats a can of worms that i best keep off my PC. Webmail is the way.

I do save my OO documents as doc for compatibility with other office users. The only reason i need office now is to update my CV.

Maybe he has Office 95, or something like that, which is a stepdown from OpenOffice 2.1.0
