DAEMON Tools is an advanced application for multiprotection emulation. It is further development of Generic Safedisc emulator and incorporates all its features. This program allows running Backup Copies of SafeDisc (C-Dilla), Securom, Laserlock, CDCOPS, StarForce and Protect CD (and many others) protected games. Also included is a Virtual DVDROM drive (Generic DVD-ROM) enabling you to use your CD images as if they were already burned to CD! DAEMON Tools works under Windows9x/ME/NT/2000/XP with all types of CD/DVDROM drives (IDE/SCSI) and supports nearly any CD protection.

Changelog:
  • Support for StarForce 4.70.
  • Support for compressed and encrypted *.mds images which soon will be created by Alcohol and DAEMON Tools Pro.
  • Support for compressed and encrypted *.isz images created by UltraISO.
  • Fixed some minor issues with image autorun, autostart option etc. (also HKCU is used now instead of HKLM).
  • Added "Check for updates" option (periodically checks for new version at each tray start).
  • Internal virtual drive engine enhancements.
  • Fixed installation problems on Dell systems with Embassy Trust Suite

This Version of DAEMON Tools (4.09 (with SPTD 1.43)) is bundled with SaveNow, an adware product of WhenU. Although the adware can be deselected during installation, this is not made clear to the user as it masquerades as "DAEMON Tools Search Bar". The WhenU web site describes this as a "SearchBar interface and new user enhancements, designed to maximize your online and desktop experiences". The setup program does ask the user if they wish to install the 'Search Bar', but it does not specifically state what the program will do. If installed accidentally, the toolbar can be removed using Add or Remove Programs.

Im a bit surprised they did this...

I guess its been like this since 4.x

At least they are being upfront about the adware and you can easily uninstall it.

It's been in there for a little while now. Most users of Daemon Tools would know about it and you can simply choose not to install it.

You shouldn't be soo quick to call out "zOMG it's got spyware NOESSSSS!!!111!!1"

Yeah, it does seem bit underhanded. It should be made more obvious that the 'DAEMON Tools Search Bar' has nothing to do with DAEMON Tools, and everything to do with Ads/User tracking.

But hay! if you install search bars in the first place then you deserve all you get. It should be common knowledge that Search Bar = Spyware, especially to the likes of people that would use DAEMON Tools i.e. the more advanced user.

That's true. This is the same for Msgplus Live!, except it's targeted towards the "click Next, Next, Next" audience.

And, advanced user should "open their eyes" before clicking Next Next Next ...

Interesting how many people seem to almost DEFEND putting Adware in a product and purposefully deceiving the users by naming it the way they have. Ya, the users should know, but then again, how could that it doesn't SAY what it is. You have to go out of your way to find out what exactly is being installed.

Very interesting indeed...

Hey, they have to raise money somehow, and donations wasn't doing it for them anymore, so they bit the bullet and made a deal with a spyware company. I'm not saying it's a perfect solution, but it is a solution that works.
If you don't install the searchbar, you don't get spyware, and they still get paid.
