Doesn't use the layout.ini as far as I know so, cause of superfetch, I wouldn't use it with Vista or even XP.

If it does use layout.ini then... fair enough.... but (presumably) you might run it then run the Vista defrag for a quicker overall defrag (-+).

So, don't be too quick to pick a defrag program. But on the other hand, hard drives STILL have to get a lot faster - still seeing new drives with max transfers of 40 mb/s when filling ... this is 2007!

AusLogics is freeware, but it lacks a lot. I've tested it along with 19 other defragmenters and it is hardly a competitor.

The 5 best I've tested are:

Diskeeper
O&O Defrag Pro
PerfectDisk
UltimateDefrag
Vopt

There are a lot of defraggers that are pretty much the same and even worse than Windows Defrag. The worst one of all is MindSoft Defrag.

Nope, I do an hour here and there when I can. I've been doing it for the last week. I should have the whole comparison finished sometime this week. I'll have it posted on my blog and many forums, including NeoWin.

I know it's nothing fancy, but it's the content that matters. My results will be there in a few days. Cheers.

Yeah, that was when I first setup my blog and wanted my pic there but that's months old and I had a friend make that image for me. I've wanted to change it for quite a while now.

I've just installed it on XP and thought it was ok, but nothing special. It's doesn't work on-the-fly and there are no real options.

I think the MS built in defragger will do an identical job; it just doesn't look as pretty.
#11 Jeremy of Many on 14 May 2007 - 16:51
No, it does not do an identical job. There's a lot more to Diskeeper than people realize without reading the piles of documented PDFs and such. I like to break things down to a fundamental level; makes it easier to sort through everything. But no, Windows Defrag is ok to defrag most of the files, but you should also place your files using a certain algorithm such as Last Access or Modification Date. Not all defragmenters do file placement either. Wait until I'm finished with my tests.
