DirectX includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX APIs.

No win98 or win2k now? Damn that's not cool.
#3.1 imachip on 06 Jun 2007 - 02:31
Not cool because it's old skool? I'd like to see a modern game run under win98 gaming setup with a 1ghz processor (I know it's possible for most but that usually requires some tweaks to the installer and sometimes .exe but that's got to be slloowww).

Windows 2000 was never a gaming OS to begin with and now MS is dropping support for it, so no suprise there. Time to invest in Vista. It's not as bad as people make it out to be, espcially as drivers are almost up to par.

just get windows xp ... as i still feel vista aint really ready for mainstream use yet as it still has enough issues to where xp is still the best choice cause everything "just work" on windows xp.

And what "issues" would they be?

Immature hardware drivers, gaming performance on same hardware with XP still is much faster, for starters
Waiting till Service Pack 1 and the hardware manufactures having most of a year to get higher quality drivers is not a bad thing.

Terrible performance for simple desktop operations (even on a dual core with 2GB ram, 250GB sata2 hd), lots of crashes for various pseudocompatible softwares, terrible sound system, even with the right drivers, sluggish gaming...

Vista makes Hackintoshes look each day a better choice...

Does this include the SDK files? It would be nice if they included that from now on. Nothing like trying to run a game and getting an error because your missing some DirectX files.
#10.1 Tantawi on 07 Jun 2007 - 05:26
No it doesn't include the SDK, that's a separate 100MB+ download, but the redist will take care of all DirectX files required by any application. You only need the SDK if you're developing DirectX based applications.
#10.2 jstillion on 07 Jun 2007 - 17:33
The SDK installs a different set files (debug) dx runtime files that run slower then normal DX that are used for tracking / troubleshooting for a developer.

Not true. Ever try and run the BF2142 Demo? There are a couple of games I have ran into that require the extra DirectX files from the SDK kit.
