Driver Magician Lite is freeware, it identifies all the hardware in the system, extracts their associated drivers from the hard disk and backs them up to a location of your choice. Then when you format and reinstall/upgrade your operating system, you can restore all the "saved" drivers just as if you had the original driver diskettes in your hands. Driver Magician Lite works with all versions of Windows 98/SE/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista/x64.

Obviously, more folders are within these subfolders but overall I keep most of the software downloaded up to date on a weekly basis which doesn't take long. Older versions get removed and I try to maintain the "Samurai" folder has a capacity no larger than 1 DVD for backup purposes. This gets backed up once every month.As a second backup, I have configured my Western Digital 400GB "MyBook" to backup my folder, alongside a few other folders such as "My Music", my Thunderbird profile etc... This too, is done once a month. This method is very easy to use, it's almost like 1 click and you're done, but I do a manual backup onto DVD's every 3 months for the other folders just in case of a HDD failure.
I'm sure this software has it's uses... maybe for the novice user, but for people like myself I don't think I'd use it.
On the same note, how does everyone else backup their data? Would be interesting to hear other points of view
No kidding. It's one thing to enumerate a bunch of files it thinks are required, but the real test is to restore from nothing (which you can't do with this version). From a technical perspective, I have serious doubts it's foolproof...some installers spew files all over the place (just look at HP's bloatware "drivers"
I'll let somebody else be the guinea pig.
