Driver Magician Lite is freeware, it identifies all the hardware in the system, extracts their associated drivers from the hard disk and backs them up to a location of your choice. Then when you format and reinstall/upgrade your operating system, you can restore all the "saved" drivers just as if you had the original driver diskettes in your hands. Driver Magician Lite works with all versions of Windows 98/SE/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista/x64.

I don't know if this is the first product to do this, but this is the best idea I've seen in software in a longtime...

I usually save the downloaded & installed drivers in the first place, but this is still a very useful tool (if it works)!

Same here. I have a folder on my desktop titled "Samurai". This contains the following folders:
  • Documents
  • Drivers
  • Games
  • Icons
  • IPB
  • Linux Distro's
  • Patches
  • Portable Apps
  • Program Files
  • Wallpaper
  • Windows XP Themes
Obviously, more folders are within these subfolders but overall I keep most of the software downloaded up to date on a weekly basis which doesn't take long. Older versions get removed and I try to maintain the "Samurai" folder has a capacity no larger than 1 DVD for backup purposes. This gets backed up once every month.

As a second backup, I have configured my Western Digital 400GB "MyBook" to backup my folder, alongside a few other folders such as "My Music", my Thunderbird profile etc... This too, is done once a month. This method is very easy to use, it's almost like 1 click and you're done, but I do a manual backup onto DVD's every 3 months for the other folders just in case of a HDD failure.

I'm sure this software has it's uses... maybe for the novice user, but for people like myself I don't think I'd use it.

On the same note, how does everyone else backup their data? Would be interesting to hear other points of view

The freeware version does not support restoration of the saved drivers...

No kidding. It's one thing to enumerate a bunch of files it thinks are required, but the real test is to restore from nothing (which you can't do with this version). From a technical perspective, I have serious doubts it's foolproof...some installers spew files all over the place (just look at HP's bloatware "drivers" and deviate from the "standard" location(s) (if there is such a thing).

I'll let somebody else be the guinea pig.

It's very useful in situations when you can't find installation of some drivers, in that case you can extract drivers from the installed system. For example, I borrowed from a friend USB to Serial cable and drivers for that cable was lost. With Driver Magician I extracted drivers from my friends computer and installed cable on my. It's really great app!
