Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr networks. Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time. Pidgin supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer, away messages, and typing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, spell checking, tabbed conversations, and more. Pidgin runs on a number of platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Qtopia (Sharp Zaurus and iPaq).

Interesting that you refer to them as Gaim users within the article. Nice to see that they are frequently updating this release.

Bah! I just compiled 2.0.1 last night. Now I must compile it again . In all seriousness, frequent updating is always good (as long as they are good updates I suppose).

I'd like to see some solid webcam support (at least just for the MSN protocol) in a future release. =/

MSN is a little troubled in Pidgin. Right now it doesn't support features like personal messages etc (right now scheduled for the msnp14 branch merge in 3 months i think). I would actually be surprised if Pidgin had working webcam support soon. If you need webcam stuff, give Kopete a try if you use linux (haven't used it in years so I'm not sure how well it works with webcams and msn).

This is quickly becoming the Firefox of messengers.

But I think the mascot could do with a slight upgrade. It's a little morbid-looking right now. Dark purple... not a happy color!

Something maybe like a carrier pidgeon?

I think the logo looks fine how it is, no need to change it. It's certainly better than the "Gaim Guy."
