Spybot - Search and Destroy 1.5 Beta

Advertisement (Why?)
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer. SpyBot-S&D allows you to exclude selected cookies, programs or extensions from being reported, allowing you to prevent false positive messages for items that you dont want to be alerted of every time. It can even scan your download directory for files that have been downloaded, but not yet installed, allowing you to detect unwanted programs before you even install them. SpyBot produces a detailed and easy to understand report before it deletes any files and allows you to deselect any item that you do not want to be processed. In addition, a recovery feature allows you to restore your settings if needed.

Please note that this is unsupported experimental software, and not an official product. Install at your own risk!

I sure hope this better than the current version. It used to rock!

And it's still, what's wrong with it? it's the best one available in my opinion.

i agree this is probably one of the best free anti-spyware etc programs out there... this and ad-aware and spywareblaster (non of them run in the background ) is all i use... although honest i probably dont really need them cause it's quite unlikely i would ever get infected with spyware etc cause i usually dont install software i dont know/trust.

Ad-aware 2007 installs services and has something running in the background. I uninstalled it right after.

Damn cool logo!

This program was the very best a long time ago, but the signatures haven't been too snappy recently, and Windows Defender seems to pick up more stuff nowadays...

This + HijackThis + NOD32 == Safety.

Hardware firewall + common sense = Safety
#2.2 richwuk on 16 Jun 2007 - 20:36
The last update I did about a week ago added about another 10k entries to the 'Immunize' feature. I think the updates are improving....

Well I was about to say Linux = safety but that would have been going too far

But yeah...use a hardware firewall, use a secure browser, keep Windows up to date, watch where you go and what you download and you won't have any need for security software constantly running in the background. You might have one program installed to run a check every month but nothing more. At least I didn't before I decided to switch.

And if you share the computer with multiple adults? What if their computer usage can't be monitored?

Safety & Security = hard yank on power extension at the wall.

There's always DeepFreeze and a reboot. No virus or malware gets past that.
Security and safety does not equal tearing the POWER cord from the wall. I have all my important data backed up and no personal files saved on the HDD. If a hacker got through my router, they'd see my OS, software and games. If I saw strange activity on my PC, I'd simply disconnect the ethernet cable from the router which is within arm's reach.
Try hacking through air (with a wired connection since I knew you wireless folk would poke at that )

this is one of must have apps for windows, thanks for the update!
#4 th3rEsa on 16 Jun 2007 - 21:11
Great icon, where does it appear within the application itself?

Updating.

Amazing program but the definition could do with some changes

Spyware isn't that new..

I wish they gave it a new UI

Not essential to the purpose of the app. but a 2007 UI would be most welcome.
#6.1 Chinch on 17 Jun 2007 - 12:34
yeah seriously. program is awesome, interface is horrible. ditch the 98 look and it'd be perfect.

I for one am glad that Spybot didn't become Spybloat. Look at Ad-Aware 2007. It has indeed become a bloat.

Why should "good looks" matter for an anti-spyware app? The primary concern is that all options should be easily accesible, and it should be fast and light. And portable. That's all.

What's the point in even having skins?
#7 Vegetunks on 16 Jun 2007 - 22:46
This app needs a new UI for sure. But the "Realtime" Scanning feature on Spybot is great if you're on vista with a dualcore cpu. gets the whole scan done in like 5 seconds flat
#8 Croquant on 16 Jun 2007 - 23:38
I love the UI. Don't change it.
Oh, and I'll wait for the 1.5 final.
#9 EduardValencia on 17 Jun 2007 - 00:45
damn the Ui must be updated, pleasee

This goes to the ultimate protection list when it gets an official release:

Ad-Aware 2007 + NOD32 AntiVirus System + Spyware Terminator + Windows Defender + Spybot Search And Destroy.

I agree with you, although I use Internet Explorer 7 because it's safer than Firefox.

I cannot believe someone would ACTUALLY think that IE7 is safer than Firefox. That's completely ignorant. If you feel like arguing about it, do some research, first. Hell, get Opera while you're at it.

As for 1.5, I'm going to try the beta, but I won't go full force here at work (Tech at an ISP) until 1.5 Final comes out.

Ultimate Toolkit Version 1.1.05's defensive lineup:

Hijackthis 2.0 (Beta)
Rogue Remover 1.19
MVPs Hosts
Spyware Blaster 3.5.1
CCleaner 1.40.520 (Portable version for CD's)
Spybot S&D 1.4
Adware (Still testing 2007)
Spyware Terminator 1.9.2.140
A-Squared Free 3.0
Windows Defender
AVG Free Anti-Virus (Also keep a copy of AVG Anti-Spyware and AVG Anti-Rootkit around for extra punch)
Avira Anti-Virus as an alternative to AVG, upon customer request.
Rootkit Revealer (SysInternals)
Anti-Rootkit (Panda Software... yes I know, but it's top dog atm, try it.)
Advanced Windows Care 2
Easy Cleaner 2.1 (Beta)
Auslogics Disk Defrag 1.1
Firefox 2.0.0.4 or Opera 9.2 as alternative to IE7.

That's the main page on my CD (Splash Screen)
That's not including the other roughly 70 tools/programs/fixes at my disposal, including some firewalls like Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall, and Comodo Personal Firewall. (NEVER use ZoneAlarm!!1)
All told, my Toolkit has around 200 +/- 20 programs for ultimate PC protection.

I'm currently working on a torrent for this or possibly an FTP download if anyone would be interested.

Huh why 4 anti-spyware programs? 2 at most is all you need.

I got Spybot, Defender and AVG on my system

Yeah an update on UI would be nice but is not a high proriety for me
#12 cork1958 on 17 Jun 2007 - 13:11
Great tool, but slower than molasses in the middle of a Michigan winter anymore. Still use it though, although not nearly as often. Mainly only use it for the SDHelper. Have found A2 to be just as effective and faster (by a hair).

Like I said still use it and Adaware (sometimes) although I think that one has gone downhill now too, especially wanting to start a service running all the time. Hate that crap!!

Will wait for the official release of Spybot 1.5 before trying it.

SpywareBlaster works for me..huhuhu
