VideoLAN is an excellent multimedia player with it's own plugins for playing different formats, so it doesn't need any codecs to be installed. It works great for previewing partially downloaded files too as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

Changes between 0.8.6b and 0.8.6c:

Various bugfixes, notably:
 * Windows Vista compatibility
 * Cropping in Direct3D
 * Fullscreen change crash on Mac OS X
 * RSS filter string overflow
 * Few memory leaks
 * MKV demuxer crash (related to seeking)

CDDA / Vorbis / Theora / SAP plugins:
 * Security updates (VideoLAN-SA-0702)

Demuxers:
 * Fixed a problem with detecting embedded subtitles (GAB2 format) in AVI

Decoders:
 * Updated FLAC API compatibility

Input:
 * Support for new v4l2 encoder API

Localisation:
 * New localisation: Arabic, Persian

I hate this player , the subtitles support is horrible , WMp11 + K-Lite Codec pack rocks all the way !

^^ LOL Codec packs -- gee I cant recall the number of times I've had to troubleshoot someones media player and 90% of the time the solution is >> install the stupid codec pack, then reinstall the 1 codec they actually need. Codec packs are bloatware.

As for VLC -- its a great player and streaming app (thats why it won the the best Free Software development prize at Lutèce d'Or)

And, finally this update allows video to play properly in VLC (no need to switch to GDI/OpenGL). Shame it took so long but glad its finally fixed.

only thing this is really good for is playing high def stuff pretty much.
#5 Jexel on 17 Jun 2007 - 02:22
thanks for the heads up. I can finally pause the damn thing in fullscreen using the space bar!

Thanks! Ever since I discovered VLC, I haven't looked back in terms of video playback.

Nah, that means that those binaries are beta, and are not ready for public consumption, that's all

@franzon

Warning for what ? VLC 0.8.6c is on the official Videolan servers or not ? Server Hacked ? Let the conspiracy begins! Apple or MS hacked the VLC servers and uploaded an unofficial version of VLC

VLC is deffinately my player of choice for my burnt anime's and my dvds and my obscurely-formatted videos, but the interface needs seriously reworked.

Always good to have on standby.

MPC and a few choice codecs is the way to go. It's all about 1080p
