Total Commander is a file manager for Windows, a program like Windows Explorer to copy, move or delete files. However, Total Commander can do much more than Explorer, e.g. pack and unpack files, access ftp servers, compare files by content, etc!

* Configurable main menu.

* Built in file viewer (Lister) to viewfiles of ANY SIZE in hex, binary or text format, using either theASCII- (DOS) or the ANSI- (Windows) character set. The line width andfont size can now be changed. You can even view files inside archives!New: Support for Unicode UTF-8 format.

If it looks like a ASS then make yourself a better one that doesn't look like that.

Ok, so it looks like it's a refugee from Windows 3.11. Well, when you get past the butt-ugly UI it is actually usefully.
Not so much that I'd pay for it, but still usefull.

It has been around a heck of a long time, so you can see why it looks that way. It's tried-and-tested software.

I've used Directory Opus on plenty of machines and I'm not much for it at all.
  1. Directory Opus has always been unstable for me. As soon as you start doing multiple things with it, it crashes. For me, it crashed a LOT.
  2. TC has a familiar interface...and if you hate it you can customize it quite easily to have it look different than the SS that you see.
  3. The interface has been improved from version 6.x so at least they are making progress on it.
  4. The portability of TC is awesome, with it copying onto any USB device with ease so you can use it on other PC's as your file manager.
  5. Plugins are available for TC and works great on BartPE installs.
  6. TC has a great history and is widely recognized as a fantastic file manager amongst true enthusiasts. Not for shine or thrills, but because it does its job damn well.

I will say that after using both products I wouldn't consider purchasing DO over TC. To each his/her own though. I've used both products for approximately 1 year.

I wouldn't judge software being a piece of crap unless you've actually tried it and can post why it's crap. It might not be the prettiest, but I'll take the stability and features of this app over DO without thinking twice about it.

"Piece of crap" software just doesn't ring true with TC, period. If you think it's crap - cite an example of why it is and make a constructive post instead of some generalized statement. Tell me one thing that TC does (as part of their feature list) that works like crap? A bad GUI (in your opinions) wouldn't make the software crap - it might make it ugly, but it doesn't hinder what the product claims to do.

I certainly don't need the glitz of an explorer look-alike with pictures for GUI backgrounds in my DO interface with other eye candy when I want to get down to the nitty gritty details of file management. I want a simple interface that does what it claims to do. And the fact that TC takes up 560 kb of memory is just fine with me as well.

I agree with you whole heartedly i have been using this program from the first time i used windows 3.1. I love it and its a clone of the old norton commander which was a great dos app.

Ghost96,

Thank you for posting that, I couldn't of said it better myself.

I've personally been using TC for atleast 7 years. From back when it was named "windows commander."

In my opinion, the best thing about TC, is how amazingly fast you can manage your files with it. When you get good with it, which just like anything else there is a bit of a learning curve, you'll soon be copying, renaming, moving, unpacking, packing, etc, all in a blink of an eye. Whenever someone watches me use TC they are simply blown away by how much more efficient you can be with it, compared to say windows explorer. Most software isn't even in the same league. No bloat, no BS, your shareware license lasts for life, etc.

Those who are quick to judge are the same ones that pass up that good book because the cover isn't pretty enough for them. I'd like to re-iterate Ghost96's point, don't post unless it's constructive and backed up with examples. When is neowin going to get a digg like commenting system ?
