µTorrent is an efficient and feature rich BitTorrent client for Windows sporting a very small footprint. It was designed to use as little cpu, memory and space as possible while offering all the functionality expected from advanced clients. Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0 and above, BitComet 0.63 and above) and peer exchange. µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources - typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren't there at all. Additionally, the program itself is contained within a single executable less than 220 KB in size.

Features:

* Multiple simultaneous downloads
* Configurable bandwidth scheduler
* Global and per-torrent speed limiting
* Quick-resumes interrupted transfers
* RSS Downloader
* Trackerless support (Mainline DHT)

What's new:

- Fix: Disable Local Peer Discovery for private torrents

Is there any truth to the rumors that uTorrent has some kind of connection to groups such as the RIAA and includes components to track usage in versions after 1.6.1?
#1.1 HawkMan on 21 Jul 2007 - 23:07
Well utorrent was bought up/merged with the official torrent client. and he started workign with RIAA...

and some torrent sites do give this warning:

"It has been determined that utorrent 1.7 and upwards has a bug that reports your stats incorrectly and it reports private info outside of the tracker.

We advise anyone using these versions to downgrade back to uTorrent 1.6.1. Anybody using 1.7 or above does so at their own risk and will not be given any user support.
To downgrade, stop utorrent, and download uTorrent 1.6.1 (Build 490) and save it in place of your existing utorrent.exe file. Download uTorrent 1.6.1"

^This update fixes that.

TBH, I'd rather be safe than sorry. There is no proof whatsoever that utorrent sends private information to RIAA or w/e, but I don't need it to decide to not use it anymore. It's your choice if you want to use it or not.

Never said it was a problem There are plenty of other options for the paranoid, either use one of the older utorrent versions or just use another client.

I likes my warez.

or you could use something like peer guardian. No need to wear a tinfoil hat folks. If it was true dont you think somone smarter than yourself would have already explosed it and put egg on the face of the developers?
#1.7 JoHideo on 22 Jul 2007 - 17:01
What is the last version of utorrent before it became associated with Bram Cohen?

Actually µTorrent 1.6 (build 474) was the last version before RIAA & Mr.Bram Cohen affair. Build 490 was after...anyway you can get µTorrent 1.6 (build 474) here:

A couple of places that I frequent have banned people for using anything above 1.6 build 474.

i have yet to hear anything about the program itself having that issue however. there is a filter add on that will do that. as long as you download the original version from their site you should not have any issues.

I'm new to torrents and have been using this program for about a week now. I was able to down a few this with it, but the main problem is it kills my connection constantly.

Whats up with that? Is it always this unreliable?

Are you on dial-up or something?

If your running XP, you need to install the TCPIP patch then set net.max_halfopen(?) to a number like 38
also, make sure you limit your upload speed

A more logical fix, other than removing a security feature from a system file, would be to simply limit the number of possible outgoing connections from within utorrent.

Sounds like your ports aren't forwarded correctly by your router, in your routers settings, set all port forwarding to automatic, and then get utorrent to use a port you make up, then add the port association in your router. If that doesn't make sense, google router port forwarding.

nice program as it's the best torrent client out there

So is this version safe to use? or is 1.6.1 better to use?
#5.1 Nexus- on 22 Jul 2007 - 06:01
use this build and use something like peerguardian. that would protect you no matter what you choose to do or what software you choose to run.

This is banned from Most "Ratio" torrent sites due to some bugs that it causes?

Dammit.... my client won't auto-update! "No update found" (and no, I'm not behind a firewall or proxy).
#8 FuhrerDarqueSyde on 22 Jul 2007 - 16:05
RE: #7 Poster

According to Firon in the uTorrent forums, auto-update won't be updated til Monday, manually download it if you want it before then.

That's what I'm thinking. I don't think anybody would hold back proof of uTorrent doing something questionable if it was true.

yes, if A) you wan't to go back to dial-up speeds (it might be faster now though) and B) you wanted to kill the network...
