The Mozilla Corporation have today uploaded the follow-up to their hugely popular web browser, Firefox. Despite not being featured on the Firefox homepage the files have all been uploaded to the Mozilla FTP site. English versions of Linux, Macintosh and Windows versions are available.

Don't most people just wait for the update nowadays...?

click "Help > Check for updates" and it will update for you.. it's not really going beyond the auto-update feature, it just doesn't check every single minute of every day..

That seems to be RC2 not the final

5. #389580 [Core:File Handling]-some schemes with %00 launch unexpected handlers on windows [Win]

A quick turn-around to fix a mac regression and to close another security hole.

Nope. But Neowin don't care. Of course, yet again they jump the gun. Yet again they link straight to the single machine at ftp.mozilla.org, heaping unnecessary load on it and effecting other people working on other projects. Why they can't simply wait for Mozilla's announcement and then point to ftp://releases.mozilla.org/ and show a bit of courtesy I'll never know.

That was completely over-the-top and immature.

Like I said on the pidgin page, they wait a few days to put it up on the main page to make sure there are no huge issues. It is out though. Hence why it is ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.6/ already pointed out in Copernic's post.

No, they don't.

The server at ftp.mozilla.org is one machine that all the nightly testers and QA get their builds from for the verification and validation of firefox. eg: from ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2.0.0.6-candidates/rc2 (and a server that deals with nightly builds for all the other related mozilla projects).

Once it's been through QA and everyone's signed off on it, it gets copied to ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.6/ -- any files places in this dir are then replicated to all the proper distribution points (all the other ftp servers) which takes time. (This process is currently ongoing, which why no announcement by Mozilla wrt Firefox 2.0.0.6 has been made! )

Once all the ftp sites have the files, then the announcement for release is available, and anyone using releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.6/ will get punted onto one of the distribution ftp servers via a load-balancing mechanism to make sure the servers are all under even load and everyone can get the file.

When ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.6/ is populated, firefox is being *prepped* for release. When Mozilla make the announcement and turn the auto-update mechanism on, then (and only then) is Firefox released. (All the mirrors have the files, everything is in the right place, the starting pages are updated, etc).

You get that after installing, going to the release notes link takes you to a RC2 community beta program page that explains that the software is entering final stages before release, therefore this is not final but RC as Neowin mentioned above.

strange the change log is empty

Man people get hot and bothered about Neowin directly linking to releases. Are you guys paying their server fees? 90% of the time when I download straight from the download page which offloads me to another server, I get the same 30kb/S that I just got from this download. We haven't crashed their server *yet* so quit crying. I just installed 2.0.0.5 today and noticed that sun java was incompatible but upgraded now and no warning. I never tested 2.0.0.5 to make sure but I did with the new one and no problems. I rarely use firefox and never use java on it so it's not a big deal, but I like that they fixed the problem instead of making Sun release an update for it. I still think java is insecure as all hell but what do you do until Microsoft replaces it with something and gets sued for doing it again? :sleeping:

It did after I did a help>check for updates. Probably didn't before because I had a large torrent seed running, thus sucking up all my bandwidth.

I wonder if there will ever be a 2.0.1.0 release, though? How does the quad numeral versioning scheme work?

The higher up in the decimal places a numeral is, the more important the changes made in that release were. And yes, that means that we may see a 2.0.0.10 or a 2.0.0.11 before we see a 2.0.1.0 or a 2.1.0.0
Or we may see 3.0.0.0 before we see any of that. Wait and see.

I use Opera, myself. But I'm not dumb enough to bash Firefox just because it has security errors. Almost everything has security errors on the internet. The fact they patch them up is a good thing. Not something to criticize.

3.0 Alpha is already out and available for download. Its codenamed Gran Paradiso and its in its seventh alpha phase last time I checked. Mind you its only for developers and I think its only an engine upgrade. Full release notes can be found here:
