Media Player Classic looks just like Windows Media Player 6.4, but has many additional features. It has a built in DVD player with real-time zoom, support for AVI subtitles, QuickTime and RealVideo support (requires QuickTime and/or Real Player); built-in MPEG2/SVCD/DVD codec. Media Player Classic was created and is currently maintained by a programmer named "Gabest". This is a mod of Media Player Classic design for home cinema usage.

<3 MPC the best video software ever
Can the user just contribute to the original?
EVR is a new video renderer available with Windows Vista. It could be used on Windows XP if .Net Framework 3.0 is installed. MPC support two type of EVR :
* EVR : video is displayer by Microsoft presenter. Internal subtitles, Pixels Shaders, and D3D fullscreen are not supported with this version
* EVR custom presenter : the rendering part is made by MPC, almost the same way it's done with VMR9 renderless. Internal subtitles, Pixels Shaders and D3D fullscreen options are working in this mode."
Quote from the Home Cinema website; this is the major feature the original version doesn't have. The original MPC, now 6.4.9.1, is still being updated by "clsid", one of the developers still working on FFDSHOW TRYOUTS:

Agreed KMplayer is the best. VLC does NOT have better subtitle support as mentioned above (it's actually very bad, even with vobsub) and yea the interface is even uglier than MPC.
They're too busy whining to concentrate on watching anything other than nitpicking about the GUI. *shrug*

Don't hate because we dislike your favorite program. GUI doesn't mean EVERYTHING, but it means something. Even when playing a video you MUST look at it, what if you wanted to hit the pause button? Or select a different audio or subtitle track? Yea go be a smartass somewhere else.
