Free (released under the GNU General Public License) disk defragment and optimize utility for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/X64. Completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead, with two optimization strategies, and can handle floppies and USB disks/sticks. Included are a Windows version, a command line version (for scheduling by the task scheduler or for use from administrator scripts), a screensaver version, a DLL library (for use from programming languages), and versions for Windows X64. JkDefrag is based on the standard defragmentation API by Microsoft, a system library that is included in Windows 2000, 2003, XP, and Vista. All defragmenters are based on this API, including commercial defragmenters. JkDefrag is therefore very solid and there is no risk of losing data. You can stop the program at any time, it will finish the current file in the background. If your disks use NTFS then you're even safe when the computer crashes in the middle of defragging. Nevertheless, it's still a good idea to backup before defragmenting, just like with other defragmenters, because the heavy use of the harddisk may trigger a hardware fault.

Changes in
JkDefrag v3.25 (September 16, 2007)

- Fix for reading the "$MFT::$BITMAP". In some very special cases the bitmap would only be partially read, causing files on disk to be ignored.
- Fix for the "::$SECURITY_DESCRIPTOR" problem. Directories with a special security attribute would get this string appended to their name, making them unmovable.

- Reorganised the code for the out-of-sequence fix (see previous releases).
- Two fixes in the graphics subroutines. Some users reported that the display sometimes froze during normal operation.
- Excluded items are no longer listed in the "These items could not be moved" and "These items are still fragmented" reports.
- The error message "Cannot find volume name for mountpoint: %s" was changed into "Ignoring volume '%s' because it is not a harddisk.".
- Added "?:WINDOWSsystem32dllcache*" to the default list of SpaceHogs.

For programmers:
- Addedd message 57 to the messages.

ahh really... any idea where those would be located?

when you say GUI's... u mean it has options to select which drive/partition u want defragmented etc etc?

UPDATE: ... nevermind i found what you where talking about here... http://www.emro.nl/freeware/ (the GUI for jkdefrag)

but i think ill just stick with my current command line version with shortcuts i made to defrag only the partitions i want it to without the log files

Does this do a better job then the built in defrag on XP? Is it in anyway comparable to the pay ones?

Defragging NTFS isn't as required as it was on a FAT partition. Most users only see a placebo improvement in performance, except in rare circumstances after converting FAT to NTFS or using a heavy torrent/database setup.
