iTunes is a piece of software that lets you add to, organize and play your digital media collection on your computer, as well as sync it to a portable device. It's a jukebox player along the lines of MusicMatch and Windows Media Player, and you can use it on a Mac or Windows machine. The most significant difference between iTunes and some other media players is the built-in iTunes Music Store (where you can get podcasts, music videos, movies, audiobooks and TV shows, too) and its multi-level integration with Apple's iPod portable media player. With iTunes 7.4, sync your favorite music and more with the new iPod nano (third generation), iPod classic, and iPod touch, plus create custom ringtones exclusively for iPhone with many of your favorite songs purchased from the iTunes Store. You can now also play purchased videos with closed captioning (when available), easily rate your favorite albums from one to five stars, and watch videos at a larger size inside the iTunes window.

What’s New in this Version
iTunes 7.4.3 addresses issues with the initial setup of the iPod touch on some international versions of Windows.

That's what happens when Apple's ringtones feature gets hacked again and again and again...

Its pretty sad when you have to hack your own stuff to enjoy a ringtone.

STEVE, GIVE THE PEOPLE A BREAK!!!!

Damn right. SonyEricsson, Nokia, etc. phones can use any supported music files as ringtones and have done for years. What do Apple do? Make you PAY for a DRMed 30-sec clip which costs the same as a full track! What are they smoking?!

I own a Nokia 6275i and it does NOT let me play non-DRMed ringtones. I must pay 3.95 per ringtone unless i hack my phone to allow it to play anything. Just thought I'd correct you on that GreyWolf.

That actually depends on the network you are on. The default firmware on the phone is unlocked, and no DRM on the ringtones. Different cell providers can request this crap to be added. Vodafone is famous for this. So it is possible this was added at the request of AT&T (I doubt it, but possible)

In Singapore, it is illegal for the telecos to sell a locked phone. So do you think Apple will sell an unlocked iPhone here? I don't think so.

I have a Nokia-something too, and I can't use my own ringtones. It's ridiculous, they charge me about $3.50 + the .50 download fee for a 16 second PART of a song, when I could buy the whole song for $1.19ish. What a ripoff. I bought one ringtone when I bought the phone (cause I wanted to have at least one) and I refuse to buy any more and support that. Thieves.

As jasondefaoite said, it might be the firmware. It's certainitely not a standard thing for Nokia phones, as I've had the 6230, N70 and now have the N95 (from T-Mobile UK) and they all let me set standard MP3s as ringtones. In fact, I don't understand why there is a market for them cos I simply take an MP3 I have already, chop it down in Adobe Audition and upload to phone via bluetooth or cable. I can even set them to individual caller groups and (in the N70 and N95's case) to specific individuals in the Contacts book. I can bluetooth the MP3 to other users and they can set it on their phones (if MP3s are supported).

It's different for Apple, as they (as phone manufacturers) are blatantly stopping owners from doing that and making them buy it from their own iTunes stores.

I'd never put up with a phone that didn't let me use my own MP3s as a ringtone.

I fail to see what your Nokia phone has to do with Apple smoking benzene...

aargh. "and includes bug fixes to improve stability and performance" don't they just add that to make us feel like downloading it?
#7.1 testman on 28 Sep 2007 - 13:05
Yeah!

However, you don't have to update every single time a new one comes out you know. If your existing setup works fine then no point in upgrading, unless it blatantly states there's a new feature and you want it.

My Mac is still running 7.4.2 and when I check for updates it says I have the current version. This is on a Mac running OS X 10.4.10.
#8.1 testman on 28 Sep 2007 - 13:02
Just download it manually from the link above. It's on their servers so you don't need to wait for Apple Software Update to bring it up. It's only going to download the same file anyway.

I only found out about 7.4.3 when Apple Software Update popped up on my Windows XP PC last night with a request to download and install this update.
#8.2 frail on 28 Sep 2007 - 17:25
The Mac version is 7.4.2 because this is a Windows-only iTunes update.

Can someone tell me how Apple is allowed to install iTunes automatically through Apple Update (installed with QuickTime)?????

It does show a box allowing you to untick it, however if there is no response, it closes and goes ahead with the download/installation anyway.

Everyone is complaining about how Microsoft secretly updated WU files, but isn't this similar?
