Just my opinion.
Just my opinion.
I agree 100%, unfortunately my boss likes "name brand" stuff. Since Kaspersky keeps snagging best reviews, we went with it. It really does slow down the system - unless you can find which features to turn off. You can speed it up significantly, but AVG works great right out of the box. I use it on all my personal PCs (except the linux ones) and couldn't be more pleased.
* Avira has an annoying popup it shows up while updating, but I've heard it has the highest detection rate of the 3.
* Avast! has a very nice and friendly user interface, that's what I used previously before Avira.
* Sincerely, I haven't tried AVG since people have commented me that it only scans for virus and doesn't disinfects. I guess it's a good time to try it.
It disinfects, I found that out yesterday.
I replaced them with Avast for almost a year, but I found that Avast interferes with normal work too much. Its updates slow everything down, and Windows startup is significantly impaired as well. But in terms of not affecting the operation of the computer in any perceptible way, I've found that AVG Free is very effective. We're I not on a low, fixed income, I would gladly pay for the full version of this product, as I used to pay for Norton and PC-Cillin.
I still keep receiving update offers and scare tactic emails from other commercial AV software companies I haven't renewed with, but if there was a way to tell them why I didn't renew my subscription, I would tell them that their product handicaps a computer too much.
I've also experimented with having only the open source clamwin installed, which does nothing at all unless you specifically tell it to scan, since it has no live scanning component. In my experience, there is no perceptible difference in my computer's operation between running no online scanner at all and running the current AVG Free (but while doing so, AVG is providing continuous scanning). So, thank you AVG. It gets my thumbs up. BTW, I run it in conjunction with Windows Defender without any problem at all.
