Believe it or not, I actually switched from Kaspersky to AVG. I'm personally not disappointed. My AVG only uses about 3MB of ram Kas used about 10. Not to mention the major speed response of the system after switching.

Just my opinion.

I agree 100%, unfortunately my boss likes "name brand" stuff. Since Kaspersky keeps snagging best reviews, we went with it. It really does slow down the system - unless you can find which features to turn off. You can speed it up significantly, but AVG works great right out of the box. I use it on all my personal PCs (except the linux ones) and couldn't be more pleased.

Kapersky has the best detection rate, AVG's isn't that great although yep, its much faster

Both AVG and avast! antivirus are great examples of a quality European software. Fast, reliable, they work and they are free for home users. I still can not understand a home user who would use that bloat Symantec or any other McDonald's type antivirus suite.

There's also Avira's Antivir. I'd recommend to any home user to use any of those 3.

* Avira has an annoying popup it shows up while updating, but I've heard it has the highest detection rate of the 3.
* Avast! has a very nice and friendly user interface, that's what I used previously before Avira.
* Sincerely, I haven't tried AVG since people have commented me that it only scans for virus and doesn't disinfects. I guess it's a good time to try it.

I've used Norton and MicroTrend. Both severely bog down my 1.8 ghz nominal AMD Turion Mobile laptop (1 GB RAM), to the point that for a power user, it becomes unusable. The CPU was constantly going into full power mode for no particular reason.

I replaced them with Avast for almost a year, but I found that Avast interferes with normal work too much. Its updates slow everything down, and Windows startup is significantly impaired as well. But in terms of not affecting the operation of the computer in any perceptible way, I've found that AVG Free is very effective. We're I not on a low, fixed income, I would gladly pay for the full version of this product, as I used to pay for Norton and PC-Cillin.

I still keep receiving update offers and scare tactic emails from other commercial AV software companies I haven't renewed with, but if there was a way to tell them why I didn't renew my subscription, I would tell them that their product handicaps a computer too much.

I've also experimented with having only the open source clamwin installed, which does nothing at all unless you specifically tell it to scan, since it has no live scanning component. In my experience, there is no perceptible difference in my computer's operation between running no online scanner at all and running the current AVG Free (but while doing so, AVG is providing continuous scanning). So, thank you AVG. It gets my thumbs up. BTW, I run it in conjunction with Windows Defender without any problem at all.

Dude I have a 2.8P4 with 1 gig of RAM and a very fast DSL connection. Avast doesnt slow my pc down at all. Updates only take around 5 - 10 seconds. Even tells you how long the update took. Clean out your prefetch.

Not a bad, free, AV package. It may not have all of the features that the Pro version, or other "non free" AV program, but it's reasonable.

I used to use AVG Internet Security. It is a fine product. Kaspersky is the best though. I have tried many different products. I have a 650 Mhz. P3. Ihave dialup. I know if my computer has any infections! My computer runs slow !!! I have 2 h.d.s, 1 has XP Home with all hotfixes. Other has XP Pro. (TinyXp Beast version, which comes with sp2 & hotfixes until Mar. 2006). I have had many trojans, ext. on Home edition until I installed Kaspersky. I have gotten no new hotfixes for XP Pro. The automatic updater shows over 100 updates to bring it up to date. I have not gotten my computer affected by anything since Kaspersky. !!!!! It is the ONLY A.V. that scans real time while on the web. It searches every page I visit before & while it is loading. It won't load if any malicious code, unless I tell it to let it load anyway after it's warning message. It scans files when I d.l. them. Same thing, warns me if any problems. I turn it on before I go on the web. Off after disconnect. When on It scans everything I or the computer does! 650 P3 or I'd leave it run all the time. I have F-Prot Dos version A.V., Spyware Doctor, Spybot S&D, Trojan Remover, Spyware Blaster, a-Squared Anti-Malware, MS's Malware Removal tool. I keep them all updated. I used to need them all before Kaspersky. The only thing any of them finds now is a tracking cookie, or "Riskware" that Kaspersky finds also. They have never found anything that Kaspersky hasn't found, except tracking cookies. Everybody is entitled to thier own opinion. That is why there are so many products. Whatever works for you is fine. I haven't been infected since Kaspersky & I run XP Pro. 99% of the time while on the web. If Kaspersky wasn't excellent I would be infected big time, missing all the updates that I am missing. I really like Neowin !!! The forums I visit the most are Skillware, Softex, 9Down, Vaanamtv, Cms Potal, The Saltinez, Symbiam, & SmartForumz. (I am not a "newbee", only to this forum). As a matter of fact, I have built & repaired computers, trouble shot networks, ext. for over 10 years. I have been on the internet for over 12 years, when there were mostly government & universities on the net. then. Before that I was involved with local B.B.S's (Bulletin Boards) on a 14 K.B.p.s. modem, I.B.M. XT computer (80086 processer, the original X86 at 15 Mhz., Dos 1, Bill Gates original Dos which he paid 50K. to obtain, so he could license it to I.B.M. with no mouse or G.U.I. Everything done with typing on a keyboard. R.G.B. interlaced video (hooked up to a monitor with RCA cables. (Interlaced is what all analogue,e.g. non Digital or non H.D. t.v.s use.) I have been around for a while. I hate to admit it but I am 48 years old! I do not think I am an expert, or know more than anyone else. But I am definately not a "newbee". Thank You Neowin forum, I hope to add to the forum, & learn from the forum. !!! 2007 J. K. ENTERPRISES® L.L.C.
