Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr networks. Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time. Pidgin supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer, away messages, and typing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, spell checking, tabbed conversations, and more. Pidgin runs on a number of platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Qtopia (Sharp Zaurus and iPaq).

I hope this fixes the login problem I have been having. Good program other than that. Nice not to get ads stuffed down your throat.

Uh, the first time that WinFuture.de was faster than NeoWin.

Nevertheless, I dislike Pidgin's GUI. It's just too "linuxish".

why don't you use another gtk theme?

I found it still looks like most Linux GTK GUIs even with the Windows-lookalike theme.

It's a GTK issue, I think. GIMP looks like Linux, too.

But there's no real alternative for GIMP on Windows, so I need to keep working with it. For Pidgin, indeed, there are some - so I continue using Miranda.

Paint.NET is not that mighty yet... (the latest version I've checked was 3.0 beta, though.)

Really hoping to see offline message support in the near future. The pounce feature is nice but I have friend that like to appear offline and with the current protocol, I can't send them messages until they appear online. It's annoying to ask them to change their status (they might be ducking someone else) or switch to *shudders* Windows Live...

This is a cool program. It's good to know it's updated. I have to admit, since I switched to Ubuntu I just tend to let it update my software when they put newer versions into their repositories. If I were still using Windows, I'd be snapping this up. But now it's so easy just to let Ubuntu keep me updated.

I wonder if they'll ever fix the bug which means if I have Pidgin autostart with Linux, it won't start minimised like I want it to, but starts maximised. Last I saw, it was a LOW priority issue for them.
